AbstractThis statement addresses the need to provide clinically relevant and practical guidance for long-term care staff working in care homes and other stakeholders engaged in the care of residents who require consideration for dexamethasone and oxygen therapy. It had been provided following a series of consensus discussions between the EDWPOP and the EuGMS in January and February 2021. Its main aim is to minimise morbidity and mortality from serious acute illnesses including COVID-19 requiring these treatments within the long-term care sector.

Experimental models are critical for the understanding of lung health and disease and are indispensable for drug development. However, the pathogenetic and clinical relevance of the models is often unclear. Further, the use of animals in biomedical research is controversial from an ethical perspective.The objective of this task force was to issue a statement with research recommendations about lung disease models by facilitating in-depth discussions between respiratory scientists, and to provide an overview of the literature on the available models. Abstract Aims  Our objective was to better understand the genetic bases of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a leading cause of systolic heart failure. Methods and results  We conducted the largest genome-wide association study performed so far in DCM, with 2719 cases and 4440 controls in the discovery population. Markov Chains and Electrical Networks

There is a natural connection between electrical networks and so called reversible Markov chains. An example for such a chain is the symmetric graph random walk which, in each step, jumps to a randomly chosen graph neighbor at equal probability. This connection is studied here in some detail. As an application, we prove the statement that if such a graph random walk is recurrent, then it is recurrent also on each subgraph. (Although this statement is rather plausible, it is hard to show by different means.) In particular, the graph random walk on a percolation cluster of the planar integer lattice is recurrent.

Testing for goodness rather than lack of fit of continuous probability distributions.

The vast majority of testing procedures presented in the literature as goodness-of-fit tests fail to accomplish what the term is promising. Actually, a significant result of such a test indicates that the true distribution underlying the data differs substantially from the assumed model, whereas the true objective is usually to establish that the model fits the data sufficiently well. Meeting that objective requires to carry out a testing procedure for a problem in which the statement that the deviations between model and true distribution are small, plays the role of the alternative hypothesis. Conceptual Confusion is Not Always a Bad Thing – The Curious Case of European Radical Right Studies

Over the course of many years, as a teacher, scholar, and friend, Ruth Zimmerling has impressed on me the importance of precisely defining one’s concepts. After all, if there is no agreement on the intension and extension of a concept, it is impossible “to assess the truth or falsity or, more generally, the correctness or incorrectness, of propositions, hypotheses or theories” (Zimmerling 2005: 15). The statement is almost self-evident: Without precisely defined concepts, the whole endeavour of science becomes pointless, and scholarly discourses are bound to turn into dialogues of the deaf.
