Measurement of brain tissue pressure in cold induced cerebral oedema.

Experiments were performed in order to evaluate the concept that brain oedema is associated with an increase in local interstitial fluid pressure. Assuming that the pressure measured by the cotton wick technique represents the hydrostatic interstitial fluid pressure, the tissue pressure was recorded with pressure transducers in the white matter adjacent and remote to a local cold injury, in the opposite hemisphere, and in the cisterna magna. In 9 cats during steady-state conditions mean tissue pressures between 1.20±0.30 mm Hg and 2.33±0.80 mm Hg were found, as compared to a mean CSF pressure of 5.17±0.82 mm Hg. Controlling the size and shape of metallic colloids is crucial for a number of nanotechnological applications ranging from medical diagnosis to electronics. Yet, achieving tunability of morphological changes at the nanoscale is technically difficult and the structural modifications made on nanoparticles generally are irreversible. Here, we present a simple nonchemical method for controlling the size of metallic colloids in a reversible manner. Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the influence of static and multi-pulsed hydrostatic pressure processing (HPP) treatments on the polyphenolic profile, oxidoreductase activity, colour, and browning index of carrot juice. Phenolic acids, flavonoids, lignans and other polyphenols were the predominant polyphenols detected with Triple-TOF-LC-MS/MS. The highest concentration of ferulic acid, didymin, dihydro-p-coumaric acid, sesaminol and matairesinol isomers were found among all the compounds detected. ABSTRACT The relationship between membrane permeability, changes in ultrastructure, and inactivation in Escherichia coli strain K-12TG1 cells subjected to high hydrostatic pressure treatment at room and subzero temperatures was studied. Propidium iodide staining performed before and after pressure treatment made it possible to distinguish between reversible and irreversible pressure-mediated cell membrane permeabilization. New Pressure-Induced Polymorphic Transitions of Anhydrous Magnesium Sulfate

The effects of pressure on the crystal structure of the three known polymorphs of magnesium sulfate have been theoretically study by means of DFT calculations up to 45 GPa. We determined that at ambient conditions gamma MgSO4 is an unstable polymorph, which decompose into MgO and SO3, and that the response of the other two polymorphs to hydrostatic pressure is non isotropic. Additionally we found that at all pressures beta MgSO4 has a largest enthalpy than alpha MgSO4. This indicates that beta MgSO4 is thermodynamically unstable versus alpha MgSO4 and predicts the occurrence of a beta alpha phase transition under moderate compression. Solid solutions of ${\mathrm{Ar}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathit{x}}$(${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$${)}_{\mathit{x}}$ have been investigated by x-ray powder diffraction in the range 0.5x1.0, 8T60 K, and under hydrostatic pressures up to 2200 bars. The structural hcp-cubic (Pa3) phase transition is identified as a martensitic transformation with a wide transformation hysteresis. For x0.8 and T30 K the solid solutions show the orientational glass state, which is characterized by a superposition of inhomogeneous and homogeneous lattice strains. Effect of Pressure on Direct Optical Transitions of ?-InSe

We have investigated the effect of hydrostatic pressure on direct optical transitions of the layered semiconductor γ-InSe by photoreflectance (PR) spectroscopy (T = 300 K). In addition, electroreflectance (ER) measurements were performed at ambient pressure. Six structures are resolved in the ER spectra in the energy range from 1.1 to 3.6 eV. The pressure dependence of four of these structures was determined by PR spectroscopy for pressures up to 8 GPa. In order to assign the features observed above the fundamental gap we have carried out band structure calculations for InSe at ambient pressure using a full-potential linear augmented plane wave method.
