Optimizing MRI contrast with B1 pulses using optimal control theory

2016

The variety of achievable contrasts by MRI makes it a highly flexible and valuable diagnostic tool. Contrast results from relaxation time differences, which are intrinsic properties of each tissue. Using optimal control theory, one can control the obtained contrast by applying excitation pulses that bring the magnetization in a user-defined target state. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the feasibility and the flexibility of using optimal contrast pulses. The robustness to experimental variable parameters such as field inhomogeneities is also studied. Finally, an in-vitro contrast experiment is performed on a small-animal MRI showing a reasonable match with the simulation resu…

Adaptive consensus of uncertain nonlinear systems with event triggered communication and intermittent actuator faults

2019

This paper investigates distributed consensus tracking problem for uncertain nonlinear systems with event-triggered communication. The common desired trajectory information and each subsystem's state will be broadcast to their linked subsystems only when predefined triggering conditions are satisfied. Compared with the existing related literature, the main features of the results presented in this paper include four folds. (i) A totally distributed adaptive control scheme is developed for multiple nonlinear systems without Lipschitz condition, while with parametric uncertainties. (ii) The derivative of desired trajectory function is allowed unknown by all subsystems and directed communicati…

Assembly Assistance System with Decision Trees and Ensemble Learning

2021

This paper presents different prediction methods based on decision tree and ensemble learning to suggest possible next assembly steps. The predictor is designed to be a component of a sensor-based assembly assistance system whose goal is to provide support via adaptive instructions, considering the assembly progress and, in the future, the estimation of user emotions during training. The assembly assistance station supports inexperienced manufacturing workers, but it can be useful in assisting experienced workers, too. The proposed predictors are evaluated on the data collected in experiments involving both trainees and manufacturing workers, as well as on a mixed dataset, and are compared …

Parametric Hull Design with Rational Bézier Curves

2021

AbstractIn this paper, a tool able to support the sailing yacht designer during the early stage of the design process has been developed. Quadratic and cubic Rational Bézier curves have been selected to describe the main curves defining the hull of a sailing yacht. The adopted approach is based upon the definition of a set of parameters, say the length of water line, the beam of the waterline, canoe body draft and some dimensionless coefficients according to the traditional way of the yacht designer. Some geometrical constraints imposed on the curves (e.g. continuity, endpoint angles) have been conceived aimed to avoid unreasonable shapes. These curves can be imported in any commercial CAD …

Neural modelling of friction material cold performance

2008

The complex and highly non-linear phenomena involved during braking are primarily caused by friction materials’ characteristics. The final friction materials' characteristics are determined by their compositions, manufacturing, and the brake's operating conditions. Analytical models of friction materials' behaviour are difficult, even impossible, to obtain for the case of different brakes' operating conditions. That is why, in this paper, all relevant influences on the friction materials' cold performance have been integrated by means of artificial neural networks. The influences of 26 input parameters, defined by the friction materials' composition (18 ingredients), manufacturing (five pa…

A review of diagnostics and prognostics of low-speed machinery towards wind turbine farm-level health management

2016

Abstract Large wind farms are gaining prominence due to increasing dependence on renewable energy. In order to operate these wind farms reliably and efficiently, advanced maintenance strategies such as condition based maintenance are necessary. However, wind turbines pose unique challenges in terms of irregular load patterns, intermittent operation and harsh weather conditions, which have deterring effects on life of rotating machinery. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art in the area of diagnostics and prognostics pertaining to two critical failure prone components of wind turbines, namely, low-speed bearings and planetary gearboxes. The survey evaluates those methods that are applicabl…

Learning of Cooperative Behaviour in Robot Populations

2016

This paper addresses convergence and equilibrium properties of game theoretic learning algorithms in robot populations using simple and broadly applicable reward/cost models of cooperation between robotic agents. New models for robot cooperation are proposed by combining regret based learning methods and network evolution models. Results of mean-field game theory are employed in order to show the asymptotic second moment boundedness in the variation of cooperative behaviour. The behaviour of the proposed models are tested in simulation results, which are based on sample networks and a single lane traffic flow case study.

Nonlinear network dynamics for interconnected micro-grids

2018

Abstract This paper deals with transient stability in interconnected micro-grids. The main challenge is to understand the impact of the connectivity of the graph and model nonlinearities on transient and steady-state behavior of the system as a whole. The contribution of this paper is three-fold. First, we provide a robust classification of transient dynamics for different intervals of the parameters for a single micro-grid. We prove that underdamped dynamics and oscillations arise when the damping coefficient is below a certain threshold which we calculate explicitly as function of the product between the inertia coefficient and the synchronization parameter. Second, for interconnected mic…

Power losses in power-split CVTs: A fast black-box approximate method

2018

Abstract This paper addresses the mechanical losses of planetary transmissions, with particular attention to power-split CVTs in their hybrid electric versions. It provides unified layout-independent analytical relationships, which can be used for both analysis, design and control purposes, and a simplified approach; the latter overcomes the necessity to segment the operating range of the power-split CVT in order to keep its loss model physically consistent. An example of application to a real hybrid electric PS-CVT is performed to show the simplicity, accuracy and generality of the proposed method.

George-Veeramani Fuzzy Metrics Revised

2018

In this note, we present an alternative approach to the concept of a fuzzy metric, calling it a revised fuzzy metric. In contrast to the traditional approach to the theory of fuzzy metric spaces which is based on the use of a t-norm, we proceed from a t-conorm in the definition of a revised fuzzy metric. Here, we restrict our study to the case of fuzzy metrics as they are defined by George-Veeramani, however, similar revision can be done also for some other approaches to the concept of a fuzzy metric.
