Estimating completeness in cancer registries--comparing capture-recapture methods in a simulation study.

Completeness of registration is one of the quality indicators usually reported by cancer registries. This allows researchers to assess how useful and representative the data is. Several methods have been suggested to estimate completeness. In this paper a multi-state model for the process of cancer diagnosis and treatment is presented. In principle, every contact with a doctor during diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare can give rise to a cancer registry notification with a certain probability. In observational studies, many continuous or categorical covariates may be related to an outcome. Various spline-based procedures or the multivariable fractional polynomial (MFP) procedure can be used to identify important variables and functional forms for continuous covariates. In the analysis of gene expression by microarrays there are usually few subjects, but high-dimensional data. By means of techniques, such as the theory of spherical tests or with suitable permutation tests, it is possible to sort the endpoints or to give weights to them according to specific criteria determined by the data while controlling the multiple type I error rate. The procedures developed so far are based on a sequential analysis of weighted p-values (corresponding to the endpoints), including the most extreme situation of weighting leading to a complete order of p-values. Associative network models featuring multi-tasking properties have been introduced recently and studied in the low load regime, where the number $P$ of simultaneously retrievable patterns scales with the number $N$ of nodes as $P\sim \log N$. In addition to their relevance in artificial intelligence, these models are increasingly important in immunology, where stored patterns represent strategies to fight pathogens and nodes represent lymphocyte clones. Wait-and-switch stochastic model of the non-Debye relaxation. Derivation of the Burr survival probability

Abstract Stochastic mechanism of relaxation, in which a dipole waits until a favourable condition for reorientation exists, is discussed. Assuming that an imposed direction of a dipole moment may be changed when a migrating defect reaches the dipole, we present a mathematically rigorous scheme relating the local random characteristics of a macroscopic system to its effective relaxation behaviour. We derive a relaxation function (the Burr survival probability) that is characterized by the stretched exponential or the power-law behaviour.

Multicanonical Monte Carlo simulations

Canonical Monte Carlo simulations of disordered systems like spin glasses and systems undergoing first-order phase transitions are severely hampered by rare event states which lead to exponentially diverging autocorrelation times with increasing system size and hence to exponentially large statistical errors. One possibility to overcome this problem is the multicanonical reweighting method. Multiple Comparisons of Treatments with Stable Multivariate Tests in a Two‐Stage Adaptive Design, Including a Test for Non‐Inferiority

The application of stabilized multivariate tests is demonstrated in the analysis of a two-stage adaptive clinical trial with three treatment arms. Due to the clinical problem, the multiple comparisons include tests of superiority as well as a test for non-inferiority, where non-inferiority is (because of missing absolute tolerance limits) expressed as linear contrast of the three treatments. Special emphasis is paid to the combination of the three sources of multiplicity - multiple endpoints, multiple treatments, and two stages of the adaptive design. Particularly, the adaptation after the first stage comprises a change of the a-priori order of hypotheses.

Multivariate nonparametric tests of independence

New test statistics are proposed for testing whether two random vectors are independent. Gieser and Randles, as well as Taskinen, Kankainen, and Oja have introduced and discussed multivariate extensions of the quadrant test of Blomqvist. This article serves as a sequel to this work and presents new multivariate extensions of Kendall's tau and Spearman's rho statistics. Two different approaches are discussed. Affine Invariant Multivariate Sign and Rank Tests and Corresponding Estimates: a Review

The paper reviews recent contributions to the statistical inference methods, tests and estimates, based on the generalized median of Oja. Multivariate analogues of sign and rank concepts, affine invariant one-sample and two-sample sign tests and rank tests, affine equivariant median and Hodges–Lehmann-type estimates are reviewed and discussed. Some comparisons are made to other generalizations. The theory is illustrated by two examples.
