Abstract Background Clinical management ranges from surveillance or curettage to wide resection for atypical to higher-grade cartilaginous tumours, respectively. Our aim was to investigate the performance of computed tomography (CT) radiomics-based machine learning for classification of atypical cartilaginous tumours and higher-grade chondrosarcomas of long bones. Methods One-hundred-twenty patients with histology-proven lesions were retrospectively included. The training cohort consisted of 84 CT scans from centre 1 (n=55 G1 or atypical cartilaginous tumours; n=29 G2-G4 chondrosarcomas). The external test cohort consisted of the CT component of 36 positron emission tomography-CT scans from…
Efficacy of subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy with grass allergens for seasonal allergic rhinitis: a meta-analysis–based comparison
2012
Background: Subcutaneous (SCIT) and sublingual (SLIT) immunotherapy are the 2 most prescribed routes for administering allergen-specific immunotherapy. They were shown to be effective in control of symptoms and in reducing rescue medication use in patients with allergic diseases, but their effectiveness has to be balanced against side effects. In recent years, SLIT has been increasingly prescribed, instead of SCIT, because of improved safety and easy administration. Objective: We assessed which route is the most effective in the treatment of patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis to grass pollen. Methods: An indirect meta-analysis–based comparison between SCIT and SLIT was performed. Trea…
Our Assessment Using Palate Postoperative Problems Score (PPOPS): Tool for the Evaluation of Results in Palatal Surgery Techniques
2018
Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is a chronic condition characterized by frequent episodes of collapse of upper airways during sleep. Prevalence of the disease is settled at about 3–7%. Today, palatal surgery is a reference point in OSAHS treatment and there are many different surgical techniques. The purpose of our work is to compare post-operative results of palate surgery techniques used in our practice in OSAHS patients, studying the degree of patients’ satisfaction with a recent score recommended by Rashwan et al. called PPOPS (Palate Post-Operative Problems Score). A retrospective study was performed on a sample of 40 patients subject to different palate surgery techniques for OSAS. …
Factors associated with dental fluorosis in three zones of Ecuador
2019
Background To determine the prevalence of dental fluorosis in 10-12 year-old school children, in three provinces of the inter-andean Region of Ecuador: Imbabura, Pichincha and Chimborazo, as well as the relationship between certain factors, considering that the latest studies go back to the year 2009. Material and methods A cross-sectional and observational study was proposed. A sample of 599 was calculated at 95% of confidence considering population projections for children between 10 and 12 old of three zones of Ecuador. However, 608 school children, who had the acceptance and informed consent of their parents to participate, completed a survey about factors associated with dental fluoros…
Meta-analysis of the efficacy of different training strategies in animal models of ischemic stroke.
2013
Background and Purpose— Although several studies have shown beneficial effects of training in animal stroke models, the most effective training strategy and the optimal time to initiate training have not been identified. The present meta-analysis was performed to compare the efficacy of different training strategies and to determine the optimal time window for training in animal stroke models. Methods— We searched the literature for studies analyzing the efficacy of training in animal models of ischemic stroke. Training was categorized into forced physical training, voluntary physical training, constraint-induced movement therapy, and skilled reaching training. Two reviewers independently …
THU0248 GLOMERULAR AND TUBULOINTERSTITIAL LESIONS IN PER-PROTOCOL REPEAT BUT NOT BASELINE KIDNEY BIOPSY PORTEND RELAPSE AND LONG-TERM RENAL FUNCTION …
2020
Background:In patients with lupus nephritis (LN), clinical response to treatment and renal histopathology have been shown to be discordant. No clinical or laboratory markers have to date been shown to reliably portend renal prognosis, in particular renal function impairment. Objectives:To investigate whether per-protocol repeat renal biopsies are predictive of LN relapses and long-term impairment of renal function.Methods:Forty-two patients with an incident biopsy-proven active proliferative (class III/IV ± V) LN from the LN database of the Université catholique de Louvain were included in the present retrospective study. Per-protocol repeat kidney biopsies were performed in all patients aft…
Emergency department performances during overcrowding: the experience of the health protection agency of Brianza.
2018
Background: Hospital emergency departments (ED) can contribute to improve health outcomes and reduce costs of health care system. This study evaluated ED admissions during a twelve months period, analyzing characteristics of patients who underwent to emergency care in order to understand factors involved in ED overcrowding and promote adequate management. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed a twelve months window, with in-depth focus on December/January when almost all EDs reported overcrowding. All ED admissions were recorded in electronic schedules including: demographic characteristics, time/date of the access, incoming triage code, diagnosis, performed procedures, discharge, time…
Ramadan Observance during Pregnancy in Germany: a Challenge for Prenatal Care.
2018
Abstract Introduction Fasting during Ramadan while pregnant has been shown to have long-term negative effects on the offspringʼs physical and cognitive health. Even though most Muslims do not believe pregnant women are obligated to fast during Ramadan, fasting rates of up to 87% have been reported for pregnant women. No data exists to date about Ramadan adherence and behavior in Germany. Methods The Mainz Study of Ramadan and Pregnancy surveyed pregnant Muslims and new Muslim mothers in Mainz between October 2016 and January 2017 and collected information on Ramadan adherence and behavior. We also collected data on personal characteristics and opinions, to identify determinants of fasting u…
Übereinstimmung von klinischer Beurteilung, Heidelberg-Retina-Tomograph (HRT) und Nerve Fiber Analyzer (GDx) in der Glaukomdiagnostik
2004
BACKGROUND We have made a comparison of clinical evaluation, Heidelberg-Retina-Tomograph (HRT) and Nerve Fiber Analyzer (GDx) in diagnosing glaucoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS One eye of 38 glaucoma patients and 26 non-glaucoma patients was examined with HRT and GDx. Assignment of the patients into the two groups by clinical evaluation was performed on the basis of visual field and optic disc results. As classification criterion for glaucoma/non-glaucoma by means of the instruments we employed the statistical classification of the HRT and "the number" of the GDx. Statistical analysis was performed with Cohen's kappa and McNemar tests. Additionally, ROC curves for evaluation of the sensitivity a…
Cranial nerve function in workers exposed to polychlorinated dioxins and furans
2002
OBJECTIVE: To look for possible effects of polychlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/F) on cranial nerve function. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical and neurophysiological examinations [visual and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (VEP and BAEP), blink reflex] in 121 PCDD/F exposed workers of one pesticide producing plant. RESULTS: BAEP abnormalities were more frequent in workers with chloracne (6 of 33 workers, 18.2%) than in those without chloracne (7 of 84, 8.3%), but this was not statistically significant (chi2: 2.33). VEP abnormalities were seen in one worker with and two without chloracne. Clinically visual functions were normal except in one worker, who was amaurotic since birth. Blin…
