Spectral density of the correlation matrix of factor models: a random matrix theory approach.

2005

We studied the eigenvalue spectral density of the correlation matrix of factor models of multivariate time series. By making use of the random matrix theory, we analytically quantified the effect of statistical uncertainty on the spectral density due to the finiteness of the sample. We considered a broad range of models, ranging from one-factor models to hierarchical multifactor models.

Lower and Upper Probability Bounds for Some Conjunctions of Two Conditional Events

2018

In this paper we consider, in the framework of coherence, four different definitions of conjunction among conditional events. In each of these definitions the conjunction is still a conditional event. We first recall the different definitions of conjunction; then, given a coherent probability assessment (x, y) on a family of two conditional events \(\{A|H,B|K\}\), for each conjunction \((A|H) \wedge (B|K)\) we determine the (best) lower and upper bounds for the extension \(z=P[(A|H) \wedge (B|K)]\). We show that, in general, these lower and upper bounds differ from the classical Frechet-Hoeffding bounds. Moreover, we recall a notion of conjunction studied in recent papers, such that the res…

Escape transition of a polymer chain from a nanotube: How to avoid spurious results by use of the force-biased pruned-enriched Rosenbluth algorithm

2008

A polymer chain containing $N$ monomers confined in a finite cylindrical tube of diameter $D$ grafted at a distance $L$ from the open end of the tube may undergo a rather abrupt transition, where part of the chain escapes from the tube to form a "crown-like" coil outside of the tube. When this problem is studied by Monte Carlo simulation of self-avoiding walks on the simple cubic lattice applying a cylindrical confinement and using the standard pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM), one obtains spurious results, however: with increasing chain length the transition gets weaker and weaker, due to insufficient sampling of the "escaped" states, as a detailed analysis shows. In order to solve…

Table of periodic properties of human immunodeficiency virus inhibitors

2010

Classification algorithms are proposed based on information entropy. The feasibility of mixing a given human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) inhibitor with dissimilar ones is studied. The 31 inhibitors are classified by their structural chemical properties. Many classification algorithms are based on information entropy. An excessive number of results appear compatible with the data and suffer combinatorial explosion. However, after the equipartition conjecture one has a selection criterion. According to this conjecture, the best configuration is that in which entropy production is most uniformly distributed. The structural elements of an inhibitor can be ranked according to their inhibitory a…

Co-jumps and Markov Counting Systems in Random Environments

2020

Motivated by the analysis of multi-strain infectious disease data, we provide closed-form transition rates for continuous-time Markov chains that arise from subjecting Markov counting systems to correlated environmental noises. Noise correlation induces co-jumps or counts that occur simultaneously in several counting processes. Such co-jumps are necessary and sufficient for infinitesimal correlation between counting processes of the system. We analyzed such infinitesimal correlation for a specific infectious disease model by randomizing time of Kolmogorov’s Backward system of differential equations based on appropriate stochastic integrals.

Entropy, transverse entropy and partitions of unity

1994

AbstractThe topological entropy of a transformation is expressed in terms of partitions of unity. The transverse entropy of a flow tangential to a foliation is defined and expresed in a similar way. The geometric entropy of a foliation of a Riemannian manifold is compared with the transverse entropy of its geodesic flow.

Molecular Classification of 5-Amino-2-Aroylquinolines and 4-Aroyl-6,7,8-Trimethoxyquinolines as Highly Potent Tubulin Polymerization Inhibitors

2013

Algorithms for classification and taxonomy are proposed based on criteria as information entropy and its production. It is classified a series of 5-amino-2-aroylquinolines (AAQs) and 4-aroyl-6,7,8-trimethoxyquinolines (TMQs) combretastatin analogues for anti-cancer activity. 5-Amino-6-methoxy-2-aroylquinoline AAQ showed anti-proliferative activity more potent as compared to combretastatin A-4 (CA4), against various human cancer cell lines and a multidrug resistance (MDR) cancer cell line. On the basis of AAQ/TMQ structure–activity relationship new derivatives are designed. The AAQs/TMQs are classified using nine characteristic chemical properties in molecules. Many classification algorithms…

Relational priming is to analogy-making as one-ball juggling is to seven-ball juggling

2008

Relational priming is argued to be a deeply inadequate model of analogy-making because of its intrinsic inability to do analogies where the base and target domains share no common attributes and the mapped relations are different. The authors rely on carefully handcrafted representations to allow their model to make a complex analogy, seemingly unaware of the debate on this issue 15 years ago. Finally, they incorrectly assume the existence of fixed, context-independent relations between objects. Although relational priming may indeed play some role in analogy-making, it is an enormous – and unjustified – stretch to say that it is “centrally implicated in analogical reasoning” (sect. 2, para…

Evaluating the Reform of Healthcare System in Sicily: variations of efficiency and appropriateness between 2008 and 2010

2022

Background. Sicilian government has developed a very ambitious Reform through the Regional Law n. 5 (14th April 2009). Hospitals were requested to ensure the quality of care through monitoring of appropriateness and quality of service. The aim of this study was to assess variations of efficiency and organizational appropriateness of healthcare delivery before and after this Reform and to show patterns associated to different types of healthcare delivery organizations.
Methods. This study was based on repeated cross-sectional data for 118 (out of 129) short-term, acute-care, non teaching-and-research Sicilian hospitals, in 2008 and 2010. Congestion and slacks analysis was…

Commutator anomalies and the Fock bundle

1990

We show that the anomalous finite gauge transformations can be realized as linear operators acting on sections of the bundle of fermionic Fock spaces parametrized by vector potentials, and more generally, by splittings of the fermionic one-particle space into a pair of complementary subspaces. On the Lie algebra level we show that the construction leads to the standard formula for the relevant commutator anomalies.
