Influence of CO in the structural and electrical properties of Pt nanocontacts: comparison with H2 molecule addition.

2009

Density-functional theory is used to determine the atomic structure and the zero-bias conductance of Pt nanocontacts upon CO addition. Three stable atomic configurations of the nanocontacts, in conjunction with a statistical analysis of their electrical response, are enough to explain the main features of the experimental conductance histograms. Remarkably, the role of nonlocal effects when approaching the exchange-correlation potential within density-functional theory turns out to be crucial for CO molecular-based systems. Finally, a comparison with H(2) molecule addition on Pt nanocontacts is presented.

Production and Foreign Trade of Mineral Products in Latvia and Belarus

2015

Latvia and Belarus are small countries with limited scope of natural resources. However, the available mineral resources play important role in production of mineral products for domestic and foreign consumption. Main goal of the paper is to characterize the role of extraction industry in national economy and mineral products trade in two neighboring countries - Latvia and Belarus. To achieve the goal, the role of mining and quarrying industry in Latvia and Belarus was identified; trade of mineral resources in Latvia was analyzed. The main trends in the development of its own mineral resources of the Republic of Belarus were identified, the role of mineral resources in the commodity structu…

Classification of precipitation events with a convective response timescale and their forecasting characteristics

2011

[1] The convective timescale τc, which is mainly determined by the ratio of CAPE and precipitation rate, provides a physically-based measure to distinguish equilibrium and non-equilibrium convection. A statistical analysis of this timescale, based upon observational data from radiosonde ascents, rain gauges, and radar for seven warm seasons in Germany, reveals that the equilibrium and non-equilibrium regimes can be regarded as extremes of a continuous distribution. The two regimes characterize very different interactions between the large-scale flow and convection. The quality of precipitation forecasts from a non-hydrostatic regional weather prediction model with parameterized convection d…

Perceived Sociability and Social Presence in a Collaborative Serious Game

2013

Collaborative serious games have proven to have the potential to support joint knowledge construction, and there is a growing interest in applying such games to promote high-level learning. However, most of the existing studies have focused on the effects of functional, task-specific support while ignoring the social aspects of collaborative learning. This study is one aim to fill in the knowledge gap in order to understand how learners experience educational games as a means of social interaction and collaboration. The findings indicated that the game environment facilitated and supported players’ socio-emotional processes by eliciting students’ social presence and sociability. This has be…

MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSIS OF HUMAN CORNEAL ENDOTHELIUM BY MEANS OF SPATIAL POINT PATTERNS

2002

This paper presents a method for detecting abnormalities in spatial arrangements of cells within any tissue that can be described by different sets of relevant points. The method has been applied to the detection of subtle abnormalities in corneal endothelia. Images of this type of tissue can be characterized by two types of points: cell centroids and triple points associated with the apical intersections as it was proposed by Díaz.7 Both types of points jointly considered are modeled using a bivariate spatial point process; then a statistical analysis based on certain distributional descriptors proposed by Doguwa4,9 is carried out to discriminate severe and subtle abnormalities from contr…

The Effect of COVID-19 Lockdown Measures on Physical Activity Levels and Sedentary Behaviour in a Relatively Young Population Living in Kosovo

2021

To abate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, different restriction measures were imperative, limiting the possibility to be engaged in physical activity. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 lockdown on physical activity (PA) levels expressed as energy expenditure (MET-min/week) and sedentary behaviour in Kosovo. The possible association between PA levels and other factors was analyzed. 1633 participants (age range: 13 to 63 years; mean: 24.70 ± 9.33 years; body height: 172 ± 10.57 cm; body mass: 69.10 ± 13.80 kg; BMI: 23.09 ± 3.63 kg/m2) participated in the study, categorized by age, gender, BMI, and living area. An online survey, including an adapted version of the…

Longitudinal quantitative MRI assessment of cortical damage in multiple sclerosis: A pilot study

2017

PURPOSE Quantitative MRI (qMRI) allows assessing cortical pathology in multiple sclerosis (MS) on a microstructural level, where cortical damage has been shown to prolong T1 -relaxation time and increase proton density (PD) compared to controls. However, the evolution of these changes in MS over time has not been investigated so far. In this pilot study we used an advanced method for the longitudinal assessment of cortical tissue change in MS patients with qMRI in comparison to cortical atrophy, as derived from conventional MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twelve patients with relapsing-remitting MS underwent 3T T1 /PD-mapping at two timepoints with a mean interval of 12 months. The respective co…

Theresa May’s Representation of Reality in her Brexit Speeches

2020

This study analyses Theresa May’s three seminal Brexit speeches. These describe the kind of desirable post-Brexit EU-UK relationship that she envisioned, and together constitute a corpus of 18,532 words. The speeches can be considered as landmarks on a timeline that was initially meant to lead to the delivery of Brexit. It is hypothesized that there may be meaningful differences between the speeches, and that these affect the representation of reality. These in turn would have a bearing on May’s discursive self-representation as either an individualized or a collectivized social actor. To account for such representational values, the study draws on Halliday’s Transitivity System (1994), sta…

Co-authorship networks and institutional collaboration in works about Learning, Teaching and Education Leadership

2017

Bibliometric indicators, based on the statistical analysis of quantitative data from scientific literature, constitute currently in an essential tool for the study of research activity. In the last years, the use of bibliometric indicators as a complement to other scientific indicators to analyse the research situation of a country, its evolution in its time and their position in the international context, has been extended. Collaboration is a characteristic feature of modern science and it is very difficult to measure this aspect. Nevertheless, it is widely accepted to count the combined signatures done by two or more authors, with the analysis of the institutional affiliation mentions and…

Design considerations of high RAP-content asphalt produced at reduced temperatures

2018

In many countries recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) for road surface layers is limited to a maximum of 10–30%. This is due to technical limitation of common asphalt plant but also to specifications that are still restrictive when it comes to increasing RAP in surface courses. The mistrust in this practice is mainly related to uncertainty in performance of these mixes as well as to existing fundamental issues with the mix design, especially when production temperatures are lowered. This paper analyses some of the factors affecting the design of warm asphalt mixtures for surface course layers containing 50% RAP, and suggests a framework to justify the common assumption of full ble…
