Cutting efficiency of heat-treated nickel-titanium single-file systems at different incidence angles.

2020

Cutting efficiency of Reciproc R25 (REC) and Reciproc blue R25 (REB) at different inclinations was evaluated. Sixty new files were tested at 90°, 70° and 45° of inclination in relation to the sample (n = 10), using a customised machine. All files were activated in reciprocation against standardised gypsum blocks for 120 s. Cutting efficiency was determined by measuring the block weight loss with an analytical balance and measuring the length of the block surface cut using a digital calliper. Data were statistically analysed (two-way ANOVA, Bonferroni t-test) with the significance level set at P < 0.05. There was no difference for REC among the tested angles. REB had no statistical differenc…

Stimulated whole salivary flow rate: The most appropriate technique for assessing salivary flow in Sjogren syndrome

2020

Background We sought to determine the most appropriate method for measuring salivary flow to aid the diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome (SS). Specifically, we compared the unstimulated whole salivary flow rate (UWSFR) with the stimulated whole salivary flow rate (SWSFR). Material and Methods This case-control study comprised one group of 103 patients with SS and a control group of 50 healthy people. We measured the UWSFR and SWSFR in both groups according to the guidelines established by Navacet (1993). Results The UWSFR and SWSFR were significantly lower in the patient group compared with the controls (p < 0.01). Among the participants in the patient group, we found a decreased UWSFR in 84 in…

Preliminary evaluation of near-infrared vein visualization technology in the screening of palatal blood vessels.

2018

Background Avoidance from palatal blood vessel rupture is a major concern during the palatal soft tissue graft surgery. There is no defined chair-side and case-specific palatal blood vessel detection approach to facilitate the harvesting process. The objective of this pilot study is to assess the feasibility of a near-infrared vein visualization system in the screening process of palatal blood vessels. Material and Methods An extraoral vein visualization device (AccuVein AV400) was applied to a total of 304 hemi-maxilla of 152 individuals by two blind examiners. The study groups were classified according to their maximum inter-incisal measurements. The distances between the coronal border o…

Effects of Functional Strength Training on Functional Movement and Balance in Middle-Aged Adults

2021

Functional movement deficiencies cause falls and injuries in adults. Functional strength training (FST) is emerging as a new training method for athletes, middle-aged and older adults, to improve functional movement: The present study was conducted in order to investigate the effects of FST on balance and functional movement in healthy and independent middle-aged adults. The sample for this study consisted of 46 physically active individuals (24 female and 22 male). A total of 46 subjects were divided based on randomly into the functional strength training (FST) group (n = 26) aged: 51.55 ± 3.73 years; height: 168.69 ± 8.8 cm; body mass: 75.88 ± 12.18; and traditional s…

In vitro quantitative comparison of erosive potential of infant mouthwashes on glass ionomer cement

2018

Background The widespread use of mouthwashes, specially in children, is a concern, since the long-term use may modify the topography of dental materials. However, this process still unclear regarding the wear related to infant mouthwashes on glass ionomer cement. Thus, the purpose of this investigation was evaluate the erosive potential of infant mouthwashes on glass ionomer cement specimens. Material and methods Forty round-shaped specimens were divided into 4 groups (N=10) and submitted to erosive cycling for 15 days, being exposed 2X/day in the following children's active agents mouthwash solutions: G1- cetylpyridinium chloride, G2- xylitol and triclosan and G3 - Malva sylvestris and xyl…

A comparative assessment of the accuracy of electronic apex locator (Root ZX) in the presence of commonly used irrigating solutions

2013

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of Root ZX in determining working length in presence of normal saline, 0.2% chlorhexidine and 2.5% of sodium hypochlorite. Material and Methods: Sixty extracted, single rooted, single canal human teeth were used. Teeth were decoronated at CEJ and actual canal length determined. Then working length measurements were obtained with Root ZX in presence of normal saline 0.9%, 0.2% chlorhexidine and 2.5% NaOCl. The working length obtained with Root ZX were compared with actual canal length and subjected to statistical analysis. Results: No statistical significant difference was found between actual canal length and Root ZX measurements in pres…

The Rhetoric and Relevance of IS Research Paradigms: Conceptual Foundations and Empirical Evidence

2006

This paper discusses the relevance of IS research with respect to the rhetoric associated with the three major IS research paradigms in use - positivism, constructivism/interpretivism and critical research. The conceptual discussion is framed in terms of the following dimensions: ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions, relationship between theory and practice, and the role of the researcher in the research process. Based on this discussion, we propose a conceptual model to study the relationship between the espoused philosophical assumptions of researchers and the degree of relevance of researchers’ knowledge claims. This conceptual model was evaluated with data obtaine…

Early identification of permanent maxillary canine impaction: A radiographic comparative study in a Mexican population

2019

Background Opportune diagnosis, prediction, and interceptive treatment of permanent maxillary canine (PMC) impaction is fundamental for pediatric dentists and orthodontists. In children and young adolescents, diagnostic information obtained from a panoramic radiograph is valuable for the overview and prediction of a potential PMC ectopic eruption into the oral cavity. The aim of the present study was to calculate and compare the prevalence of impaction of PMC in a Mexican pediatric sample (7 to 13 years old), through the use of the Ericson & Kurol (EK/L) and the Power & Short (PS) measurement analyses performed on panoramic radiographs. Material and methods This investigation was a cross-se…

Color Difference Thresholds in Dentistry

2015

Purpose The aim of this prospective multicenter study was to determine 50:50% perceptibility threshold (PT) and 50:50% acceptability threshold (AT) of dental ceramic under simulated clinical settings. Materials and Methods The spectral radiance of 63 monochromatic ceramic specimens was determined using a non-contact spectroradiometer. A total of 60 specimen pairs, divided into 3 sets of 20 specimen pairs (medium to light shades, medium to dark shades, and dark shades), were selected for psychophysical experiment. The coordinating center and seven research sites obtained the Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals prior the beginning of the experiment. Each research site had 25 observers,…

The use of virtual reality as a potential restorative environment in school during recess

2020

Publisher Copyright: © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. Copyright: Copyright 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved. Previous research has found out that simulated, Virtual Reality (VR)-based forests can bring equal or even higher restorative effects than real forests. In this study, a Virtual Reality (VR)-based forest was created in order to compare whether VR-based forest can possess restorative effects in the context of primary school, and how the possible effects compare to restorative effects of a normal recess or to a situation when there is no recess at all. The effects were measured using Restorative Outcome Scale (ROS) and problem-solving tasks after the intervention. The res…
