The Core Self-Evaluation Scale: Psychometric properties of the German version in a representative sample

2014

The Core Self-Evaluation Scale (CSES) is an economical self-reporting instrument that assesses fundamental evaluations of self-worthiness and capabilities. The broad aims of this study were to test the CSES's psychometric properties. The study is based on a representative survey of the German general population. Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted for different models with 1, 2, and 4 latent factors. The CSES was found to be reliable and valid, as it correlated as expected with measures of depression, anxiety, quality of life, self-report health status, and pain. A 2-factor model with 2 related factors (r = -.62) showed the best model fit. Furthermore, the CSES was measurement invar…

Effects of the Best Possible Self intervention: A systematic review and meta-analysis

2019

The Best Possible Self (BPS) exercise promotes a positive view of oneself in the best possible future, after working hard towards it. Since the first work that attempted to examine the benefits of this intervention in 2001, studies on the BPS have grown exponentially and, currently, this is one of the most widely used Positive Psychology Interventions. However, little is yet known about its overall effectiveness in increasing wellbeing outcomes. Thus, the aim of this meta-analysis is to shed light on this question. A systematic literature search was conducted, and 29 studies (in 26 articles) met the inclusion criteria of empirically testing the intervention and comparing it to a control con…

Statics and Dynamics of Bidisperse Polymer Melts:  A Monte Carlo Study of the Bond-Fluctuation Model

1998

As a first step toward the computer simulation of polydisperse polymeric melts, a lattice model containing two types of chains with lengths N1 = 20 − x and N2 = 20 + 4x (0 ≤ x ≤ 10 ) is studied. This variation of x, together with the fixed composition of 80% of short and 20% of long chains, leads to a polydispersity of 1 ≤ Nw/Nn ≤ 2 (Nw, Nn:  weight-, number-average chain lengths). To represent dense melts, the bond-fluctuation model at a volume fraction, φ = 1/2, of occupied lattice sites is used. The simulation treats both the athermal case (chain connectivity and excluded volume interaction only) and a thermal case, where additionally a choice for the bond length and bond angle potential…

A neural network approach to movement pattern analysis.

2004

Movements are time-dependent processes and so can be modelled by time-series of coordinates: E.g., each articulation has geometric coordinates; the set of the coordinates of the relevant articulations build a high-dimensional configuration. These configurations--or "patterns"--give reason for analysing movements by means of neural networks: The Kohonen Feature Map (KFM) is a special type of neural network, which (after having been coined by training with appropriate pattern samples) is able to recognize single patterns as members of pattern clusters. This way, for example, the particular configurations of a given movement can be identified as belonging to respective configuration clusters, …

Improved variables for measuring theΛbpolarization

1996

We discuss a few possible strategies for measuring the polarization of the {Lambda}{sub {ital b}} baryons produced in {ital e}{sup +}{ital e}{sup {minus}} annihilation at the {ital Z} resonance through their inclusive semileptonic decays. After reviewing the existing methods, an extension is proposed, based on the ratio of the averages of the squared electron and neutrino energies, including both perturbative and nonperturbative corrections. This variable minimizes the statistical error on the {Lambda}{sub {ital b}} polarization, while keeping the systematic theoretical errors at the level of 1{endash}2{percent}. A number of other polarization-sensitive variables are also discussed, such as…

A voltammetric e-tongue tool for the emulation of the sensorial analysis and the discrimination of vegetal milks

2018

[EN] The relevance of plant-based food alternatives to dairy products, such as vegetable milks, has been growing in recent decades, and the development of systems capable of classifying and predicting the sensorial profile of such products is interesting. In this context, a methodology to perform the sensorial analysis of vegetable milks (oat, soya, rice, almond and tiger nut), based on 12 parameters, was validated. An electronic tongue based on the combination of eight metals with pulse voltammetry was also tested. The current intensity profiles are characteristic for each non-dairy milk type. Data were processed with qualitative (PCA, dendrogram) and quantitative (PLS) tools. The PCA stat…

Influence of deterministic fluctuations on the 8-state Potts model

1999

We study a layered 8-state Potts model with an aperiodic modulation of the exchange couplings. Depending on its geometric properties, the aperiodic sequence may induce a 2nd order phase transition.

Are compliance constants ill-defined descriptors for weak interactions?

2013

Just as the potential energy can be written as a quadratic form in internal coordinates, so it can also be expanded in terms of generalized forces. The resulting coefficients are termed compliance constants. In this article, the suitability of compliance constants as non-covalent bond strength descriptors is studied (a) for a series of weakly bound hydrogen halide–rare gas complexes applying a configuration interaction theory, (b) for a double stranded DNA 4-mer using approximate density functional methods and finally (c) for a double stranded DNA 20-mer using empirical force fields. Our results challenge earlier studies, which concluded the inappropriateness of compliance constants as soft…

Mutual nonlinear prediction as a tool to evaluate coupling strength and directionality in bivariate time series: Comparison among different strategie…

2008

We compare the different existing strategies of mutual nonlinear prediction regarding their ability to assess the coupling strength and directionality of the interactions in bivariate time series. Under the common framework of $k$-nearest neighbor local linear prediction, we test three approaches based on cross prediction, mixed prediction, and predictability improvement. The measures of interdependence provided by these approaches are first evaluated on short realizations of bivariate time series generated by coupled Henon models, investigating also the effects of noise. The usefulness of the three mutual nonlinear prediction schemes is then assessed in a common physiological application d…

A new approach to fuzzy sets: Application to the design of nonlinear time series, symmetry-breaking patterns, and non-sinusoidal limit-cycle oscillat…

2019

Abstract It is shown that characteristic functions of sets can be made fuzzy by means of the B κ -function, recently introduced by the author, where the fuzziness parameter κ ∈ R controls how much a fuzzy set deviates from the crisp set obtained in the limit κ → 0. As applications, we present first a general expression for a switching function that may be of interest in electrical engineering and in the design of nonlinear time series. We then introduce another general expression that allows wallpaper and frieze patterns for every possible planar symmetry group (besides patterns typical of quasicrystals) to be designed. We show how the fuzziness parameter κ plays an analogous role to temper…
