Cross-diffusion-induced subharmonic spatial resonances in a predator-prey system.

In this paper we investigate the complex dynamics originated by a cross-diffusion-induced subharmonic destabilization of the fundamental subcritical Turing mode in a predator-prey reaction-diffusion system. The model we consider consists of a two-species Lotka-Volterra system with linear diffusion and a nonlinear cross-diffusion term in the predator equation. The taxis term in the search strategy of the predator is responsible for the onset of complex dynamics. In fact, our model does not exhibit any Hopf or wave instability, and on the basis of the linear analysis one should only expect stationary patterns; nevertheless, the presence of the nonlinear cross-diffusion term is able to induce …

A topological phase transition between small-worlds and fractal scaling in urban railway transportation networks?

Abstract Fractal and small-worlds scaling laws are applied to study the growth of urban railway transportation networks using total length and total population as observational parameters. In spite of the variety of populations and urban structures, the variation of the total length of the railway network with the total population of conurbations follows similar patterns for large and middle metropolis. Diachronous analysis of data for urban transportation networks suggests that there is second-order phase transition from small-worlds behaviour to fractal scaling during their early stages of development.

Probabilistic characterization of nonlinear systems under α-stable white noise via complex fractional moments

Abstract The probability density function of the response of a nonlinear system under external α -stable Levy white noise is ruled by the so called Fractional Fokker–Planck equation. In such equation the diffusive term is the Riesz fractional derivative of the probability density function of the response. The paper deals with the solution of such equation by using the complex fractional moments. Improvements and Modifications of Tarone's Multiple Test Procedure for Discrete Data

Tarone (1990, Biometrics 46, 515-522) proposed a multiple test procedure for discrete test statistics improving the usual Bonferroni procedure. However, Tarone's procedure is not monotone depending on the predetermined multiple level a. Roth (1998, Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, in press) developed a monotone version of Tarone's procedure. We present a similar procedure that is both monotone and an improvement of Tarone's proposal. Based on this extension, we derive a step-down procedure that is a corresponding improvement of Holm's (1979, Scandinavian Journal of Statistics 6, 65-70) sequentially rejective procedure. Macroscopic Dynamic Effects of Migrations in Patchy Predator-prey Systems

Abstract Different mechanisms at the behaviourial or physiological levels determine many properties of predator-prey systems at the population level. In this paper, we present a method of obtaining complex predator-prey dynamic models from models at a detailed, behaviourial level of description. We consider a multi-patch predator-prey model, the dynamics of which contains two time-scales: a fast one, associated with migrations between patches, and a slow one, on which interactions, reproduction and mortality occur. A Galton–Watson process with a threshold

Abstract In this paper we study a special class of size dependent branching processes. We assume that for some positive integer K as long as the population size does not exceed level K, the process evolves as a discrete-time supercritical branching process, and when the population size exceeds level K, it evolves as a subcritical or critical branching process. It is shown that this process does die out in finite time T. The question of when the mean value E(T) is finite or infinite is also addressed.

Modular Structures on Trace Class Operators and Applications to Landau Levels

The energy levels, generally known as the Landau levels, which characterize the motion of an electron in a constant magnetic field, are those of the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator, with each level being infinitely degenerate. We show in this paper how the associated von Neumann algebra of observables displays a modular structure in the sense of the Tomita–Takesaki theory, with the algebra and its commutant referring to the two orientations of the magnetic field. A Kubo–Martin–Schwinger state can be built which, in fact, is the Gibbs state for an ensemble of harmonic oscillators. From deterministic cellular automata to coupled map lattices

A general mathematical method is presented for the systematic construction of coupled map lattices (CMLs) out of deterministic cellular automata (CAs). The entire CA rule space is addressed by means of a universal map for CAs that we have recently derived and that is not dependent on any freely adjustable parameters. The CMLs thus constructed are termed real-valued deterministic cellular automata (RDCA) and encompass all deterministic CAs in rule space in the asymptotic limit $\kappa \to 0$ of a continuous parameter $\kappa$. Global and multiple test procedures using ordered p-values—a review

This paper reviews global and multiple tests for the combination ofn hypotheses using the orderedp-values of then individual tests. In 1987, Rohmel and Streitberg presented a general method to construct global level α tests based on orderedp-values when there exists no prior knowledge regarding the joint distribution of the corresponding test statistics. Extending conventional priors for testing general hypotheses in linear models

We consider that observations come from a general normal linear model and that it is desirable to test a simplifying null hypothesis about the parameters. We approach this problem from an objective Bayesian, model-selection perspective. Crucial ingredients for this approach are 'proper objective priors' to be used for deriving the Bayes factors. Jeffreys-Zellner-Siow priors have good properties for testing null hypotheses defined by specific values of the parameters in full-rank linear models.
