Socioeconomic and Medical Approaches upon Pensions Systems

2021

The social protection of citizens was an essential issue for all countries, regardless of the form of government, sociocultural characteristics, and economic system. In this chapter, we aim to identify the factors, which determined the configuration of the current pension systems implemented in the five CEE countries.

The Importance and Role of Social Policy in Maintaining Macroeconomic Stability

2021

Pension systems have the role of reducing the financial risk associated with the loss of the ability to carry out professional activities for income, a risk that determines poverty and is associated with severe material deprivation. The objective of this chapter is to emphasize the role of social policy in society and in macroeconomic policies in order to maintain socioeconomic stability and promote sustainable economic growth.

Diet composition and seasonal feeding patterns of a freshwater ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis)

2014

The Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) is one of the few freshwater seal populations worldwide. The major conservation issue of this critically endangered population is bycatch mortality. We used digestive tract content and stable isotopes (d 13 Ca ndd 15 N) to estimate the diet and seasonal feeding patterns for gaining better understanding of the seals feeding habits and potential conservation implications. The diet was similar across age groups. Altogether 15 fish species were identified and the most important were smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), ruff (Gymnocephalus cernuus), perch (Perca fluviatilis), vendace (Coregonus albula )a nd cyprinids. The high d 15 N values suggested that th…

Performance status and depressive symptoms as predictors of quality of life in cancer patients. A structural equation modeling analysis

2015

Objective: This study aimed to examine whether depressive symptoms and performance status are independent predictors of both the physical and psychological domains of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in cancer patients. Methods: A sample of 4020 cancer patients (mean age 58 years, 51% women) was evaluated. Depressive symptoms were measured with the patient health questionnaire and HRQoL with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality of life questionnaire core 30. The impact of the illness on everyday activities was assessed with physician ratings of both the Karnofsky performance status and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status. The sim…

Using a Multidimensional Measure of Resilience to Explain Life Satisfaction and Academic Achievement of Adults With Reading Difficulties.

2014

We assessed the impact of intrapersonal and interpersonal resilience, persistence, and number of difficulties in addition to reading problems on life satisfaction (general, social, and self) and academic achievement. A total of 120 adults with reading difficulties who either were completing a university degree or were recent graduates responded to an in-lab or online survey. Results indicated that intrapersonal resilience correlated positively with interpersonal resilience and persistence, and both resilience factors were negatively associated with number of difficulties. Using structural equation modeling, intrapersonal resilience explained general satisfaction, intrapersonal resilience a…

Machine-learned selection of psychological questionnaire items relevant to the development of persistent pain after breast cancer surgery

2018

Background: Prevention of persistent pain after breast cancer surgery, via early identification of patients at high risk, is a clinical need. Psychological factors are among the most consistently proposed predictive parameters for the development of persistent pain. However, repeated use of long psychological questionnaires in this context may be exhaustive for a patient and inconvenient in everyday clinical practice. Methods: Supervised machine learning was used to create a short form of questionnaires that would provide the same predictive performance of pain persistence as the full questionnaires in a cohort of 1000 women followed up for 3 yr after breast cancer surgery. Machine-learned …

Elusive Migration Systems: Shifting from Transnationalism to Transregionalism

2016

The global financial and economic crisis as well as post-socialist transition means a similar general framework for socioeconomic and spatial development in different countries. Their migration systems react in different ways on such externally caused incidents, even in slightly comparable contexts. Consequences are, among others, increasing migrations and mutual interactions between sending and receiving countries as well as strong linkages of international migrations and internal migratory movements – phenomena we usually refer to as transnationalism. Against this backdrop, the aim of the paper is to stress the “regional element” of transnationalism. Thus, we suggest to broadening the con…

Impact of nutritional status on the pharmacokinetics of erlotinib in rats

2015

Malnourishment is a complex condition in which physiopathological changes take place in multiple systems as a result of energy, protein and nutrient deficiency. The purpose of this study was to evaluate, using an experimental animal model, the impact of nutritional status on the pharmacokinetic profile of erlotinib, a reversible, highly selective, human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER1/EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitor. Two groups of rats -WN (well-nourished) and UN (undernourished) - were fed with different diets for 23-26 days. Rats were assigned randomly to one of three erlotinib treatments (n = 42) consisting of a single dose administered intravenously (i.v.), via oral solution or v…

Mitochondrial biogenesis in health and disease. Molecular and therapeutic approaches.

2014

Mitochondrial biogenesis (MB) is the essential mechanism by which cells control the number of mitochondria. Cells respond to different physiologic, metabolic, and pathologic changes by regulating this organelle with high morphological and functional adaptability. A considerable number of proteins, transcription factors, upstream regulatory proteins and secondary mechanisms are involved in MB and the stabilization of new mitochondrial DNA. These MB activators and regulators, including the main participating proteins (e.g. PGC-1α and mtTFA), are candidates for therapeutic intervention in diverse diseases, like neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic syndrome, sarcopenia, cardiac pathophysiolo…

Petit-mal-Status bei Hyperthyreose

2008

A 68-year-old woman who, for the first time, had a generalized tonic-clonic seizure and persisting confusional state was found to have nodular enlargement of the thyroid and a tachycardic arrhythmia. Electroencephalography (EEG) demonstrated a continuous irregular polyspike wave pattern. Total T4 concentration was elevated to 23 micrograms/dl. Consecutive Administration of 250 mg phenytoin, 4 mg clonazepam and 7.5 mg midazolam changed neither the clinical nor the EEG findings. But after general intensive care measures and high-dose thyrostatic treatment (40 mg thiamazole intravenously every four hours) the clinical and neurological status became normal. Serial EEGs over the subsequent weeks…
