Phase composition of Fe-containing Langmuir-Blodgett layers after thermal treatment in a reactive atmosphere

By the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, mono- and multilayers of ferric stearate were drawn onto silicon wafers. They were thermodesorbed in air at 250–300°C, and the layers formed in this way were found to consist of γ-FeOOH with defective stoichiometry. By heating in H2, the layers can be reduced to Fe2− and even to α-Fe. The latter is magnetically ordered and highly corrosion resistant. Chloride ions, however, induce fast corrosion. FeCl2, formed by this corrosion, is rather unstable and transforms to an Fe3+ phase. The high corrosion resistance of the metallic Fe layer is assumed to be due to its excellent homogeneity. The experiments were performed using XPS, AES, CEMS, and SEM.
CEMS/XPS study of iron stearate Langmuir-Blodgett layers

Langmuir-Blodgett mono- and multilayers of ferric stearate have been formed on oxidized silicon wafers. Thermodesorption of these layers was investigated by conversion electron Mossbauer and photoelectron spectroscopy and some complementary methods. Heating of samples in air up to 523 K leads to a desorption of the fatty acid chains, while the ferric ions are left on the substrate surface. These ions do not cluster laterally like it was found for Cd ions. They form a rather homogeneous, closed oxidic layer. Thermal analyses of commercial magnesium stearate pseudopolymorphs

Abstract Two commercial magnesium stearate powders in two well-characterised structural states are investigated using DSC and coupled TGA–DTA under dry nitrogen flow. They consist of either a mixture of crystalline hydrates or a poorly crystallised so-called anhydrate. Following the degassing of unbound water, 1 or 3 weight-loss peaks are observed below about 100 °C, each associated with one heat loss peak at the same temperature. The present results and a review of graphical data from literature show that the so-called anhydrate always contains a significant amount of water. Orientational order of Langmuir–Blodgett films as determined by fluorescence anisotropy

The orientational order parameters 〈P2〉 and 〈P4〉, of cadmium stearate Langmuir–Blodgett multilayers have been calculated from steady state fluorescence anisotropy experiments. It has been shown that it is valid to model the polarization components using the assumptions that the fluorescent probes are axially symmetric, the film is azimuthally symmetric within the plane, and that the rotational motion is slow enough to be neglected. Although the data do not preclude a dependence of anisotropy on thickness, within the sample‐to‐sample variations, there is no significant effect of thickness on orientational order. A thorough review of the relevant literature reveals that the interaction between water vapour and magnesium stearate, in contrast to many other metal soaps, is not properly understood. The structural modifications associated with the up-take or loss of water of vegetable-derived commercial magnesium stearate powders exposed to humid air or vacuum at room temperature are investigated using standard powder X-ray diffractometry. OBJECTIVE The purpose of the present study was to investigate liver microsomal membrane fluidity simultaneously with membrane fatty acid composition and desaturase activities in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Wetting properties at the surface of iota-carrageenan-based edible films

International audience; Surface properties of edible films composed of a polymeric matrix of carrageenan in association with hydrophobic material were studied by contact angle measurements. The use of this technique not only in a static mode but also in a dynamic way enables investigation of surface hydrophobicity as well as surface wettability. Iron-containing Langmuir–Blodgett mono- and multilayers were prepared by depositing ferric stearate onto silicon wafers. Particular care should be taken in order to avoid the presence of alkali ions, which may replace iron ions in the deposited film. By a subsequent heating in air, the fatty acid chains were thermodesorbed.
