Degradation half-life times of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs for environmental fate modeling.
2000
Literature search of the knowledge on the degradation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in environmental compartments air, water, soil and sediment was done in purpose to find properties of POPs of interest for modeling. One degradation process, hydrolysis (chemical degradation), was omitted as negligibly slow for POPs studied. The other two, photolysis and biodegradation processes, were considered separately in purpose to develop estimation procedures. The estimates can be given as pseudo first-order rate constants kP for photolysis and kB for biodegradation. For each compartment, an overall degradation rate is k(tot) = kP + kB and lifetime t(1/2) = ln 2/k(tot). The latter values, li…
SUSTENTABILIDADE AMBIENTAL: UM ESTUDO NA AUTORIDADE PORTUÁRIA DE VALENCIA, ESPANHA.
2012
The Eternal Return of Politics
2003
Politics of Historical Signs In his text The Contest of Faculties, Immanuel Kant makes an attempt to answer the question "Is the human race continually improving?" He identifies such an attempt as belonging to a history of future times. Nevertheless, according to Kant, such a history must start from some sort of experience. He reasons that "[w]e must, therefore, search for an event which would indicate that such a cause exists and that it is causally active within the human race, irrespective of the time at which it might actually operate; and it would have to be a cause which allowed us to conclude, as an inevitable consequence of its operation, that mankind is improving." Follow-up of patients after revascularisation for peripheral arterial diseases: a consensus document from the European Society of Cardiology Working …
2019
International audience; Peripheral arterial diseases comprise different clinical presentations, from cerebrovascular disease down to lower extremity artery disease, from subclinical to disabling symptoms and events. According to clinical presentation, the patient's general condition, anatomical location and extension of lesions, revascularisation may be needed in addition to best medical treatment. The 2017 European Society of Cardiology guidelines in collaboration with the European Society for Vascular Surgery have addressed the indications for revascularisation. While most cases are amenable to either endovascular or surgical revascularisation, maintaining long-term patency is often chall…
Moral and Civic Education. The New School’s Contribution
2014
Our aim is to establish a reflexive analysis about the way in which the New Education’s movement understands morality and the way it is meant to be taught, as well as its particular entail with civic education. We offer a synthesis of the investigation, which has its base on some not vey spread primary sources of authors and institutional organs of the movement. With it we clarify the meaning and the ways through which pedagogical currents shaped, in the beginning of the 20th century, a new way of conceiving the practice of these formative areas. We also identify the perspectives of methodological renovation that in this moment arose. These contributions, the result of which are summarized …
The Sartre‐Heidegger Controversy on Humanism and the Concept of Man in Education
2012
Jean‐Paul Sartre claims in his 1945 lecture ‘Existentialism is a Humanism’ that there are two kinds of existentialism: that of Christians like Karl Jaspers, and atheistic like Martin Heidegger. Sartre's ‘spiritual master’ Heidegger had no problem with Sartre defining him as an atheist, but he had serious problems with Sartre's concept of humanism and existentialism. Heidegger claims that the essence of humanism lies in the essence of the human being. After the Enlightenment, the Western concept of man has been presented in education in the form of Kantian humanistic essentialism. At least in the Finnish educational system, Kantian humanism is almost an official ideological background of all…

A characterization of the n-ary many-sorted closure operators and a many-sorted Tarski irredundant basis theorem
2018
A theorem of single-sorted algebra states that, for a closure space (A, J ) and a natural number n, the closure operator J on the set A is n-ary if and only if there exists a single-sorted signature Σ and a Σ-algebra A such that every operation of A is of an arity ≤ n and J = SgA, where SgA is the subalgebra generating operator on A determined by A. On the other hand, a theorem of Tarski asserts that if J is an n-ary closure operator on a set A with n ≥ 2, then, for every i, j ∈ IrB(A, J ), where IrB(A, J ) is the set of all natural numbers which have the property of being the cardinality of an irredundant basis (≡ minimal generating set) of A with respect to J , if i < j and {i + 1, . . . …
Entropy-Based Behavioural Efficiency of the Financial Market
2021
The most known and used abstract model of the financial market is based on the concept of the informational efficiency (EMH) of that market. The paper proposes an alternative which could be named the behavioural efficiency of the financial market, which is based on the behavioural entropy instead of the informational entropy. More specifically, the paper supports the idea that, in the financial market, the only measure (if any) of the entropy is the available behaviours indicated by the implicit information. Therefore, the behavioural entropy is linked to the concept of behavioural efficiency. The paper argues that, in fact, in the financial markets, there is not a (real) informational effi…
