THEORETISGHE UNTERSUCHUNGEN UBER DEN EINFLUSS DER VERWITTERUNGSSCHICHT AUF DAS SPEKTRUM ELASTISCHER WELLEN IN DER REFLEXIONSSEISMIK

1957

The following assumptions are made in the mathematical treatment of the problem. Below a plane earth's surface there is a three-layered elastic medium the interfaces of which are parallel to the earth's surface. The uppermost layer represents the weathered layer in which the velocity of propagation of seismic waves increases linearly with depth. The two lower layers, the so-called intermediate layer and the substratum each have a constant velocity. The surface of the earth is acted on simultaneously by a normal pressure N in the form of a Heaviside pulse. The seismic wave thus generated is propagated through the elastic media. The aim of the investigation is to study the shape of the wave 1…

Time-domain-induced polarization: Full-decay forward modeling and 1D laterally constrained inversion of Cole-Cole parameters

2012

Time-domain-induced polarization has significantly broadenedits field of reference during the last decade, from mineralexploration to environmental geophysics, e.g., for clay and peatidentification and landfill characterization. Though, insufficientmodeling tools have hitherto limited the use of time-domaininducedpolarization for wider purposes. For these reasons, anew forward code and inversion algorithm have been developedusing the full-time decay of the induced polarization response, together with an accurate description of the transmitter waveformand of the receiver transfer function, to reconstruct thedistribution of the Cole-Cole parameters of the earth. The accuratemodeling of the tra…

Inverse photonic-crystal-fiber design through geometrical and material scalings

2020

Geometrical and material - i.e., external and internal - scaling symmetries are exploited to obtain approximated analytical expressions for the mode effective index, group index, and chromatic dispersion of a scaled fiber. Our results include material refractive index scaling that changes the numerical aperture. First, the analytical expressions are successfully tested with a conventional step index fiber in a broadband range of wavelengths, from 1 to 2 mu m. Then, we establish a procedure to adapt the analytical expressions to photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) and illustrate its application in a triangular PCF with circular holes. These adapted analytical expressions show good agreement with …

Biosilicification of loricate choanoflagellate: organic composition of the nanotubular siliceous costal strips of Stephanoeca diplocostata.

2010

SUMMARY Loricate choanoflagellates (unicellular, eukaryotic flagellates; phylum Choanozoa) synthesize a basket-like siliceous lorica reinforced by costal strips (diameter of approximately 100 nm and length of 3 μm). In the present study, the composition of these siliceous costal strips is described, using Stephanoeca diplocostata as a model. Analyses by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), coupled with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), indicate that the costal strips comprise inorganic and organic components. The organic, proteinaceous scaffold contained one major polypeptide of mass 14 kDa that reacted with wheat germ agglutinin. Polyclonal antibodies were raised that allowed …

Metabolic Impacts of Confinement during the COVID-19 Pandemic Due to Modified Diet and Physical Activity Habits

2020

While the detrimental effects of a chronic positive energy balance due to a sedentary lifestyle have been well established, the impacts of a short period of abruptly reduced physical activity and overeating arising from strict confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic will soon start to emerge. To reasonably anticipate major consequences according to the available evidence, we hereby review the literature for studies that have explored the health impacts of several weeks of a reduction in physical activity and daily step-count combined with modified eating habits. These studies identify as main metabolic consequences increases in insulin resistance, total body fat, abdominal fat and inflamma…

Novel poly (ionic liquid)-based anion exchange membranes for efficient and rapid acid recovery from industrial waste

2020

Abstract Owing to the less energy consumption, positive impact on the environment, and prospect of providing clean water resources, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are promising materials for acid recovery from various industrial wastewater/effluent. Based on the diffusion dialysis process, AEMs selectively allow rapid proton permeation while efficiently retaining metal ions. To enhance the efficiency of the acid recovery process, precise control of macromolecular architecture and chemical composition that enables high hydrophilicity, proton conductivity through the membrane, and ion exchange capacity is required. In this direction, we report on the one-step fabrication of novel poly (ionic…

Nitroarene hydrogenation catalysts based on Pd nanoparticles glued with PDA on inorganic supports: Multivariate Curve Resolution as an useful tool to…

2021

[EN] Two green catalysts based on Pd(0) nanoparticles (Pd NPs) anchored through PDA on porous silica and magnetite have been synthesized using a generalized simple and reproducible "two-step" methodology. Both catalysts were tested for a model reaction, the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol using NaBH4 as the hydrogenating agent, and especially good activity has been achieved in the case of the catalysts containing magnetite as inorganic core (Pd NPs-PDA@Fe3O4). We analyzed the effect associated with the catalyst separation method (centrifugation or magnetically) that affect to the distribution and aggregation degree of the Pd NPs. In addition, we also correlate the final catalyst morphology w…

Statistical Characterization of Self-Assembled Colloidal Crystals by Single-Step Vertical Deposition

2014

Abstract We have statistically characterized the self-assembly of multi-layer polystyrene colloidal crystals, using the technique of vertical deposition, with parameters chosen to produce thick layers of self-assembled crystals in one deposition step. The size distribution of domains produced with this technique was seen to follow a log-normal distribution, hinting that aggregation or fragmentation phenomena play a role. In addition, using a lithographically directed self-assembly method, we have shown that the size of multi-layer, continuous crack-free domains in lithographically defined areas can be many times larger than in the surrounding areas. In a single deposition step, we have prod…

Pharmacological and chemical features ofNepetaL. genus: Its importance as a therapeutic agent

2017

Medicinal plants have always had great value for the human population due to their valuable constituents and potential bioactivities. The objective of this review is to present an updated overview of an important medicinal plant genus Nepeta L., from the family Lamiaceae, revealing its traditional utilization, biological activity, phytoconstituents, and mechanisms of action. For this purpose, a literature survey was carried out by using SciFinder, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science followed by a revision of the bibliographies of the related articles. We have described and analyzed the role of plants in drug discovery and the importance of Nepeta species. Information on the ut…
