Early Steps -liikuntaohjelman yhteydet 4-5-vuotiaiden päiväkotilasten motoristen perustaitojen kehitykseen
2008
Fundamental motor skills (FMS) are necessary skills for children to cope with their daily lives and to acquire a physically active lifestyle. Researchers have recommended that preschool-age children participate in a developmentally appropriate practice of balance, locomotor and manipulative skills for the promotion of their FMS.The purpose of this study was to examine the following questions: 1) Does an international Early Steps preschool physical education curriculum (PEC) (Zachopoulou et al. 2007) which lasts eight months have any effects on the FMS development of 4-5-year-old girls and boys in the time of one year? 2) How do the FMS of the 4-5-year-old girls and boys develop in one year?…
Pre-attentive change detection of emotional facial expressions : effects of depression and a short psychological intervention - and ERP study
2012
Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia aivojen esitietoista muutoksenhavaitsemiskykyä mittaamalla tapahtumasidonnaisia herätevastepotentiaaleja (ERP) elektroenkefalografiassa (EEG), käyttäen ärsyk-keenä emotionaalisia kasvonilmeitä. Tutkimuksessa verrattiin kahden ryhmän: masentuneiden sekä ei-masentuneiden - ERP vasteista. Lisäksi tutkimme psykologisen lyhyt intervention vaikutuksia koehen-kilöiden ERP vasteisiin. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin ärsykkeinä seitsemään universaalia kasvonilmettä, viidessä eri koeasetelmassa. Yhdessä koeasetelmassa kaikilla seitsemällä kasvonilmeelle oli yhtä suuri todennäköisyys esiintyä (p=0.14). Neljässä muussa koeasetelmassa käytettiin niin sanottua oddball pa…
Examining the Veggiee Personality: Results from a Representative German Sample
2017
An increasing proportion of people choose to follow a vegetarian diet. To date, however, little is known about if and how individual differences in personality relate to following a vegetarian diet. In the two studies presented here, we aimed to (1) estimate the prevalence of self-defined vegetarians in two waves of a German representative sample (N = 4,496 and 5,125, respectively), (2) analyze the effect of socio-demographic variables on dietary behavior, and (3) examine individual differences between vegetarians and meat eaters in personality traits, political attitudes, and health-related variables. In Study 1, a strict definition of vegetarians was used, while in Study 2 the definition …
Depression in the nursing home: a cluster-randomized stepped-wedge study to probe the effectiveness of a novel case management approach to improve tr…
2019
Abstract Background Depression is the second most common psychiatric illness in old people. Up to 30% of nursing home residents suffer from minor or major depression. Although depressive disorders in old age can be improved and even cured with adequate therapy, they often go unnoticed in nursing home residents and remain untreated. This highlights a striking deficit in health care and might results not only in lower quality of life among those concerned but also in poor physical functioning, premature mortality and increased hospitalization rates. Methods The aim of the interdisciplinary research project DAVOS is to implement an innovative and stepped structural case management program to i…
Measurement of energy expenditure by activity monitors: is it feasible to measure energy expenditure using tiny portable monitors?
2013
Physical inactivity has a major health effect worldwide. It is stated in the currently published physical activity recommendations for adults to promote and maintain health, that all healthy adults need moderate intensity physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes, 5 days per week or vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity for a minimum of 20 minutes, 3 days per week. Physical activity can be defined as any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscles that substantially increases energy expenditure and is characterised by its intensity, duration, frequency and mode of activity. Ideally, all these aspects should be recorded during physical activity measurements. Ho…
Inpatient Step Counts, Symptom Severity, and Perceived Health Status After Lung Resection Surgery.
2020
BACKGROUND The clinical relevance of inpatient step counts after lung surgery remains unknown. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify those factors related to physical activity measured by step count, during the inpatient stay, and its relationship with symptom severity and perceived health status at hospital admission, discharge, and 1 month after discharge. METHODS We studied the inpatient step count of 73 participants who underwent lung resection surgery. The number of steps was measured using a triaxial accelerometer. The health status and the severity of symptoms were examined at hospital admission, discharge, and 1 month after discharge. RESULTS Of the 73 participants, 35 wer…
Interaction of cerebrovascular disease and contralateral carotid occlusion in prediction of shunt insertion during carotid endarterectomy
2012
INTRODUCTION To assess the possible role and the interaction of cerebrovascular disease and vascular stenosis on the necessity of shunt insertion during carotid endarterectomy (CEA). MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty consecutive patients undergoing CEA under regional anaesthesia were prospectively enrolled. Patients were divided into two groups depending on whether they were shunted or not. The measured end-points were co-morbidities degree of contralateral and carotid stenosis and other intra- and postoperative outstanding parameters. ANOVA, Student's t and χ(2) tests were used (p<0.05). Variables differing significantly between groups and potential confounders were used in backward stepwise log…

Two-Step Digital Follow-up of Patients at High Risk for Melanoma: a Retrospective Analysis of 152 Patients
2021
