Osseotite caricati a due mesi nei settori posteriori del mascellare superiore: controllo a 2 anni di due casi clinici
2003
Aim Acid etched surface implants determine high clinical success rates, but little information is available about early loading in the posterior region of the maxilla, area at risk of failure. The aim of this work is to present two case reports of oral rehabilitation through acid etched surface implants (Osseotite, Implant Innovations - 3i, West Palm Beach, FL) loaded two months after insertion in the posterior maxilla. Materials and methods The success of Osseotite implants was assessed 12 and 24 months after prosthetic loading according to Albrektsson et al. criteria (1986). Results No clinical or radiographic signs of implant failure were observed during the two years follow-up. Conclusi…

Remote sensing image segmentation by active queries
2012
Active learning deals with developing methods that select examples that may express data characteristics in a compact way. For remote sensing image segmentation, the selected samples are the most informative pixels in the image so that classifiers trained with reduced active datasets become faster and more robust. Strategies for intelligent sampling have been proposed with model-based heuristics aiming at the search of the most informative pixels to optimize model's performance. Unlike standard methods that concentrate on model optimization, here we propose a method inspired in the cluster assumption that holds in most of the remote sensing data. Starting from a complete hierarchical descri…
First experience of the AML-Berlin-Frankfurt-Münster group in pediatric patients with standard-risk acute promyelocytic leukemia treated with arsenic…
2017
Recently, studies in adults with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) showed high cure rates in low-risk patients treated with all-trans retinoid acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide (ATO), while toxicities were significantly reduced compared to the standard treatment with ATRA and chemotherapy. Here we report about first experience with 11 pediatric patients with low-risk APL treated with ATRA and ATO. All patients stayed in molecular remission. All suffered from hyperleukocytosis. Two patients experienced reversible severe side effects. One suffered from osteonecroses at both femurs, seizures, as well as posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, the other patient had an abducens paresis.
Hexagonal-columnar mesophases of acylated azacrowns with enhanced stabilities
1992
A series of discotic liquid crystals based on completely acylated macrocyclic oligoamines (azacrowns) has been synthesized. Discotic mesophases could be very highly stabilized by making use of an increased steric hindrance, caused by supplemental lateral meta-substituents which were introduced into the cinnamic acids used as the acylation agents. Employing this method yields compounds exhibiting hexagonal mesophases over a very broad range of more than 300°. Even if very large macrocycles are used as the core of such disc-shaped compounds, enantiotropic mesophases are achieved. Themeta-substituents as well as the size of the azacrowns were varied and their influence on the mesomorphic behav…
Adaptive dual control in one biomedical problem
2003
In this paper, the following biomedical problem is considered. People are subjected to a certain chemotherapeutic treatment. The optimal dosage is the maximal dose for which an individual patient will have toxicity level that does not cross the allowable limit. We discuss sequential procedures for searching the optimal dosage, which are based on the concept of dual control and the principle of optimality. According to the dual control theory, the control has two purposes that might be conflicting: one is to help learning about unknown parameters and/or the state of the system (estimation); the other is to achieve the control objective. Thus the resulting control sequence exhibits the closed…
A computational model of postprandial adipose tissue lipid metabolism derived using human arteriovenous stable isotope tracer data
2019
Given the association of disturbances in non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) metabolism with the development of Type 2 Diabetes and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, computational models of glucose-insulin dynamics have been extended to account for the interplay with NEFA. In this study, we use arteriovenous measurement across the subcutaneous adipose tissue during a mixed meal challenge test to evaluate the performance and underlying assumptions of three existing models of adipose tissue metabolism and construct a new, refined model of adipose tissue metabolism. Our model introduces new terms, explicitly accounting for the conversion of glucose to glyceraldehye-3-phosphate, the postprandial …

Effects of muscular exercise on erythrocyte adenosine triphosphate concentration in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
1987
Type I diabetes mellitus represents a metabolic disorder in which intracellular glycolytic pathway is inhibited by insulin deficiency, with the subsequent decreased availability of energetic substrates such as ATP. Some aspects of the energetic metabolism in response to an intensive demand (muscular exercise) were investigated, in a group of 10 ketotic diabetic patients, by measuring erythrocyte adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and blood glucose, free fatty acids (FFA) and lactate levels. In the diabetic subjects, in comparison with normal subjects, the decreased levels of erythrocyte ATP at rest did not increase after exercise, while the increased levels of FFA at rest did not diminish after e…
