Stereoacuity After Refractive Lens Exchange With AcrySof ReSTOR Intraocular Lens Implantation
2009
Purpose: To evaluate stereoacuity before and after refractive lens exchange (RLE) with AcrySof ReSTOR intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Methods: Stereoacuity was measured using the Titmus stereotest at 40 cm under photopic conditions (85 cd/m 2 ) before and after RLE with bilateral AcrySof ReSTOR Natural (SN60D3 model) implantation in 30 hyperopic eyes of presbyopes with low astigmatism (⩽1.00 diopter [D]). Stereoacuity measurements after implantation were compared with those found before surgery. Results: Stereoacuity was unchanged after RLE with pseudoaccommodative IOL implantation. In this population of non-cataractous hyperopes with excellent preoperative stereoacuity (46.42±1.36 se…
Astigmatism among myopics and its changes from childhood to adult age: a 23‐year follow‐up study
2014
Purpose To study the prevalence of and changes in astigmatism from the onset of myopia at school age. Methods Two hundred and forty myopic schoolchildren (mean age 10.9 years), with no previous spectacles, were recruited during 1983–1984 to a randomized 3-year clinical trial of bifocal treatment of myopia. Three annual examinations with subjective cycloplegic refraction were performed for 237–238 subjects. Subsequent examinations were performed at the mean ages of 23.2 and 33.9 years for 178 and 163 subjects, and the last examination, including data from prescriptions of different ophthalmologists, for 32 subjects. Corneal topography was studied at baseline, at the 3-year follow-up and at t…
Male infertility: an obstacle to sexuality?
2016
International audience; Interactions between infertility and sexuality are numerous and complex. Infertile men may suffer from sexual dysfunction (SD) when undergoing an assisted reproductive technology programme. We undertook a review both in French and English of the available data on male SD when being diagnosed with a fertility problem with a specific focus on azoospermic men. The review was performed over a 30-year time period using PubMed/Medline. The sexual concerns and needs of infertile/sterile men for whom potential parenting can be compromised were evaluated. When diagnosed with infertility, men usually go through a crisis that can have a deleterious effect on their sexuality wit…
Social stigma and self-esteem as mediators of the relationship between Body Mass Index and Internet addiction disorder. An exploratory study
2018
The present study aimed at investigating the mediational effects of social stigma and self-esteem on the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Internet addiction disorder. A total of 413 participants aged between 18 and 26 years old (M = 20.94 SD = 2.95) were assessed with self-report standardized questionnaires exploring self-esteem (i.e. Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale - RSES), Internet addiction (i.e. Young Internet Addiction Test- YIAT), and social-stigma (i.e. Perception of Teasing Scale - POT), and with objective measures related to BMI. Results showed a partial direct association between BMI and Internet addiction. Specifically, our mediation model revealed a good fit to data sh…
Evaluation of the cytotoxic effect of 7keto-stigmasterol and 7keto-cholesterol in human intestinal (Caco-2) cells
2012
The biological implications of cholesterol oxidation products have been investigated, though research on plant sterol oxidation products is scarce and in some cases contradictory. The cytotoxicity of 7keto(k)-stigmasterol versus 7keto(k)-cholesterol at different concentrations (0-120 μM) and incubation times (4-24h), in intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2 cells) was evaluated. The 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,3-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide and neutral red uptake tests, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), and relative DNA and RNA contents in the cell cycle phases were determined. Possible interaction effects between 7k-derivatives or non-oxidized stigmasterol were monitored. Endo/lysos…
Catalogue of the Mesostigmata mites in Finland
2016
This catalogue of Mesostigmata found in Finland is based on published records, material deposited in the Zoological Museum of Turku University, and collections by the author, deposited in the Zoological Museum of Helsinki University. The total number of recorded species is 451, including 15 unidentified or undescribed species. 121 of the identified species were not previously reported from Finland. General distribution in Finland and preferred habitats of the species are given, or of rare species the details of the records. peerReviewed
Polyamine conjugates of stigmasterol.
2012
Abstract Three new polyamine conjugates with stigmasterol [(3β,22 E )-stigmasta-5,22-dien-3-ol] were synthesized and subjected to basic antimicrobial and cytotoxic tests. The conjugate derived from spermine, (3β,22 E )-stigmasta-5,22-dien-3-yl 4(12-amino-4,9-diaza-dodecylamino)-4-oxobutanoate ( 5c ), displayed considerable antimicrobial activity on Staphylococcus aureus at low concentration (50 μg mL −1 ). The cytotoxic activity was tested on cells of human T-lymfoblastic leukemia (IC 50 = 35.8 ± 10.3 μM ( 5c ) and IC 50 = 35.9 ± 5.7 μM ( 5b )) and normal human fibroblasts (IC 50 = 38.0 ± 2.8 μM ( 5c ) and IC 50 = 45.5 ± 1.9 μM ( 5b )). Conjugate 5a displayed no activity in both tests.
Effects of temperature and moisture fluctuations on an experimental soil microarthropod community
2001
Summary We established an experiment in microcosms with coniferous forest humus and birch leaf litter for testing the effects of constant vs. diurnally fluctuating temperature and uniform vs. varying moisture, on the population densities and species richness of Collembola and Mestostigmata. These parameters and the vertical distribution of populations were analysed by layers (top, centre, bottom) at two samplings (weeks 10 and 27). The hypotheses were that populations of at least some species benefit from fluctuating microclimate, and that varying conditions permit more species to coexist than uniform conditions. At fluctuating temperature regime, four species and total Collembola were more…
Relaciones padres-médicos en oncología: un enfoque cualitativo
2010
Phytosterols: to be or not to be toxic; that is the question
2008
Plant sterols (phytosterols) are membrane constituents of all plants with a structure analogous to that of cholesterol. Thus, phytosterols have either an additional methyl or ethyl group on the carbon-24 position or an additional double bond in the side chain (1) . Noteworthy, in patients with the rare inherited disease of phytosterolaemia characterized by a hyperabsorption and diminished biliary secretion of cholesterol and phytosterols as well as by tendon and tuberous xanthoma, elevated plasma concentrations of phytosterols (campesterol, sitosterol) have been shown to constitute a risk factor for premature atherosclerosis (2) . However, whether plasma concentrations of campesterol and si…
