Plasticity of synaptic ribbons of the rat pineal gland in vitro — Minor effects of electrical stimulation

Synaptic ribbons (SRs) of mammalian pinealocytes exhibit day/night changes in number and size, changes that are apparently regulated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus via postganglionic sympathetic nerve fibres. Since the neural control of SR changes is far from clear and as pinealocytes produce action potentials, we undertook to investigate whether electrical stimulation affects SR changes. Nicotine receptors do not modulate the 3H-noradrenaline release from the isolated rat heart evoked by sympathetic nerve stimulation.

Isolated rat hearts with the right sympathetic nerves attached were perfused at a constant flow rate of 7 ml/min with Tyrode's solution. (-)-3H-Noradrenaline (final concentration 10–13.9 nM) was infused for 10 min to label the noradrenaline stores. After wash-out the sympathetic nerves were stimulated electrically (3 Hz, 180 impulses, 1 ms, 20–30 mA) three times (S1–S3) at intervals of 15 min. 3H-Noradrenaline and its metabolites were determined by liquid scintillation counting according to Graefe et al. Endothelin-1-induced potentiation of adrenergic responses in the rabbit pulmonary artery: role of thromboxane A(2).

Abstract To examine whether low concentrations of endothelin-1 potentiate the vasocontrictor response to adrenergic stimulation, we recorded the isometric response of rings of rabbit pulmonary artery to electrical stimulation and noradrenaline. Endothelin-1 (10 −10 M) potentiated the contractions induced by electrical stimulation and noradrenaline. Electrically-evoked release of [3H]acetylcholine from autonomic neurons (myenteric plexus), motoneurons (phrenic nerve) and the central nervous system (neocortex) was investigated in the presence and absence of the calcium channel antagonists omega-conotoxin GVIA, nifedipine and verapamil, whereby the same species (rat) was used in all experiments. GABAergic inhibition of nitric oxide-mediated relaxation of guinea-pig ileum

The effects of GABA receptor agonists were investigated on guinea-pig isolated ileum longitudinal muscle with intact myenteric plexus. Electrical field stimulation (1 Hz, 10 s) of the histamine (1 microM)-precontracted preparation caused a contraction followed by a relaxation. Relaxations were inhibited by L-N(G)-nitroarginine (L-NA; EC50 3 microM) in a concentration-dependent manner. The inhibitory action of 10 microM L-NA was blocked by 10 microM L-arginine but not by D-arginine, which indicates that the relaxation was largely mediated by endogenous nitric oxide (NO). Nitric oxide (NO) inhibits the release of acetylcholine and cholinergic contractions in the small intestine of several species, but no information is available about the mouse ileum. 1. Rat isolated perfused hearts with the right sympathetic nerves intact were loaded with 3H-(-)-noradrenaline. The nerves were stimulated with trains of 180 pulses at 3 Hz and at 10 min intervals. The overflow of 3H-noradrenaline and 3H-metabolites was determined by liquid scintillation spectrometry. 2. Dual chamber rate responsive pacing incorporating a mode switching option is increasingly used in patients with chronic paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and high degree AV block. Single-lead VDDR pacemakers have rarely used for this indication. Influence of visual cues on gait in Parkinson's disease during treadmill walking at multiple velocities.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the interaction of different treadmill-induced gait velocities and visual cues on the gait performance in Parkinson's disease (PD). Background External cuing has been reported to facilitate hypokinetic gait patterns in PD. Methods 19 PD-patients and 17 controls volunteered for the study.
