Understanding Fast Diffusion of Information in the Social Media Environment. A Comparison of Two Cases.

2014

The purpose of this paper is to gain understanding of what factors cause rapid issue spread in social media, to help predict issue growth. The frequency graphics of two issues, Arctic Sunrise and U.S. capitol shooting, were compared to investigate rapidity of spread on Twitter. Next, a qualitative model was applied to explain the differences found. Furthermore, a first attempt was made to investigate issue transfer between social media and news media. The findings showed that news items and tweets were interrelated, with hardly any time-lag in between, although the tweets continued longer and included more emotion. The approach seems promising but needs further testing. When in practice mon…

Virtual exchange : not only for language learning

2018

Technology enables teachers to connect their students online with foreign students in a facilitated educational setting. Such tele-collaborative intercultural projects are called virtual exchange practices (O’Dowd 2018). The students get an opportunity to engage in dialogues and tele-collaboration with peers from other countries. The intercultural encounters may not only enhance the participants’ intercultural and foreign language competencies but can also develop their collaborative skills. In addition, the students can learn how to manage in communicative situations, when the communicators’ language proficiency levels and study fields are different. This article provides an overview of vi…

Maineen ja tunnettuuden merkitys yhteishyvään pyrkivän organisaation legitimiteetin muodostumisessa

2010

Kolmannen sektorin merkitys yhteiskunnassa on vahvistunut.

Practical applications of naturalistic inquiry in intercultural education

2021

In recent years, the field of intercultural communication has seen a remarkable shift characterized by a growth in publications that distance themselves from the traditional, essentialist understanding of culture. In research, this shift is reflected in approaches that appreciate culture-in-action instead of taking culture for granted as a stable entity that pre-exists social interaction and predicts as well as explains human behavior. However, despite attempts to introduce differentiated views on culture and interculturality in education, concrete options for critical intercultural training are scarce and often remain abstract, which makes their application challenging. This article argues…

On Equal Terms? : On Implementing Infants’ Cultural Rights

2020

How can we implement infants’ cultural rights? Is there even reason to confer such rights to non-speaking children, or is it enough that we recognise slightly older children as culturally active individuals? Acknowledging children’s intellectual capacities and their right to be heard in matters that concern them are important threads in research on children and ideals of childrearing during the last hundred years. This development is parallel with the one leading from the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1923 to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. The spirit of human rights that informs these documents cannot be underestimated. Yet reading the Convention carefully…
