Variety and volatility in financial markets
2000
We study the price dynamics of stocks traded in a financial market by considering the statistical properties both of a single time series and of an ensemble of stocks traded simultaneously. We use the $n$ stocks traded in the New York Stock Exchange to form a statistical ensemble of daily stock returns. For each trading day of our database, we study the ensemble return distribution. We find that a typical ensemble return distribution exists in most of the trading days with the exception of crash and rally days and of the days subsequent to these extreme events. We analyze each ensemble return distribution by extracting its first two central moments. We observe that these moments are fluctua…
Effect of SMEs' International Experience on Foreign Intensity and Economic Performance: The Mediating Role of Internationally Exploitable Assets and …
2010
In this paper, we study the relationship between the international experience of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and their economic performance using intangible and financial asset stock, competitive strategy, and international intensity as mediating factors. The RBV provides the theoretical framework to develop a theoretical model postulating that international experience has an indirect effect on foreign growth and economic performance. This model was used to test a sample of 394 Spanish SMEs through the modelization of a structural equations system. Results show that superior economic performance is only achieved by SMEs that can turn the knowledge they gain from international …
A new fuzzy logic controller for trading on the stock market
2007
A common problem that financia l operators often meet in their own work is to make, at the right moment, the operational choices on the Stock Market. Once the Market to act on has been chosen, the financial operator has to decide when and how to operate on it, in order to achieve a profit . The problem that we are going to deal with is the planning of an automatic decisional system for the management of long positions on bull market. First, a trading system (TS) will be im plemented pointing its features out. Then a fuzzy logic implementation of the TS will be introduced (FTS). The fuzzy system will be optimized by the genetic algorithms. Finally, the two different implementations of the tr…
Identifying small pelagic Mediterranean fish schools from acoustic and environmental data using optimized artificial neural networks
2019
Abstract The Common Fisheries Policy of the European Union aims to exploit fish stocks at a level of Maximum Sustainable Yield by 2020 at the latest. At the Mediterranean level, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) has highlighted the importance of reversing the observed declining trend of fish stocks. In this complex context, it is important to obtain reliable biomass estimates to support scientifically sound advice for sustainable management of marine resources. This paper presents a machine learning methodology for the classification of pelagic species schools from acoustic and environmental data. In particular, the methodology was tuned for the recognition of an…
Comparative morphometrics of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo Cetti, 1777), reared in different conditions
1999
The same genetic stock of sharpsnout seabream (Diplodus puntazzo), cultured in different conditions (lot A, monoculture tank; lot B, monoculture offshore cage; lot C, polyculture tank), was analysed using geometric morphometrics in order to detect changes in shape. Rearing in the offshore cage (lot B) had a significant effect on shape variation when compared to rearing in the two enclosed tanks (A and C). Fish from the tanks show a higher frequency (43.7% in lot A and 37.5% in lot C) of the so-called ‘goitred’ and ‘dorsal flat’ forms, their deformations shown by displacements in the corresponding landmarks of the infraopercular and dorsal areas. In contrast, the so-called ‘belly’ fish were …
Ethnobotanical investigation on wild medicinal plants in the Monti Sicani Regional Park (Sicily, Italy)
2014
Ethnopharmacological relevance The area of the "Monte Sicani Regional Park" (Central Western Sicily, southern Italy) has been quantitatively and extensively investigated in an ethnobotanical study for the first time. A total of 108 wild species are used for medicinal purposes, while, according to our study, the uses of 9 species have not previously been reported in ethnobotanical studies in Italy (e.g.; the use of Kickxia elatine (L.) Dumort. for the treatment of hyperhydrosis of the feet, the use of Lavatera agrigentina Tineo for cough and bronchitis). Aim of the study: The aim of this paper is to analyze, through quantitative indicators, the extent of the current knowledge on medicinal us…
Not all bull and bear markets are alike: insights from a five-state hidden semi-Markov model
2022
This paper employs the hidden semi-Markov model and a novel model selection procedure to detect different states in the US stock market. The empirical results suggest that the market is switching between five states that can be classified into three bull states and two bear states. The three bull states are categorized as a low volatility bull market, a high volatility bull market, and a stock market bubble. One of the bear states represents a regular bear market, while the other one corresponds to either a stock market crash or a market correction. The paper demonstrates that the five-state model is consistent with a number of stylized facts and provides many valuable insights into the dyn…
Projektmanagement als strategisches Instrument im Gründungsprozess einer Bereichsbibliothek
2005
Taking the retro-conversion project Philosophicum at the University of Mainz as an example this article shows how the possibilities of project management can be used as a strategic instrument to promote the delayed development process of the planned faculty library Philosophicum. The first part deals with the specific set-up in Mainz, whilst the second part deals with the essence of the project. The article finishes by taking stock of the current status.
The Nordic expericence revisited: labour market booms and slumps since the 1990s in Finland and Sweden
2011
PurposeThis paper aims to provide an account of the unemployment performance of two Nordic countries during their recent labour market booms and slumps.Design/methodology/approachBased on the empirical models of Karanassou et al., we conduct dynamic simulation exercises and explore the determinants of unemployment.FindingsThe analysis yields two main findings. First, the capital stock was the most important determinant of the unemployment trajectory in both countries. This result appears in all periods considered: in the slump of the early 1990s and the boom of the late 1990s, as well as in the stabilisation period of the early 2000s. Second, the role of the foreign sector on the unemployme…
The European multicenter cohort study on cyanoacrylate embolization of refluxing great saphenous veins
2014
ObjectiveCyanoacrylate (CA) embolization of refluxing great saphenous veins (GSVs) has been previously described. The outcomes from a multicenter study are still lacking.MethodsA prospective multicenter study was conducted in seven centers in four European countries to abolish GSV reflux by endovenous CA embolization. Neither tumescent anesthesia nor postinterventional compression stockings were used. Varicose tributaries remained untreated until at least 3 months after the index treatment. Clinical examination, quality of life assessment, and duplex ultrasound evaluation were performed at 2 days and after 1, 3, 6, and 12 months.ResultsIn 70 patients, of whom 68 (97.1%) were available for 1…
