A new method to "clean up" ultra high-frequency data
2007
In the applied econometrics, the availability of ultra high-frequency databases is having an important impact on the research market microstructure theory. The ultra high-frequency databases contain detailed reports of all the financial market activity information which is available. However, ultra high-frequency databases cannot be directly used. On one hand recording mistakes can be present, on the other hand missing information has to be inferred from the available data. In this paper, we propose a simple method in order to clean up the ultra high-frequency data from possible errors and we examine the method efficacy when we analyze data by using an autoregressive conditional duration (A…
Allee effects and the Allee-effect zone in northwest Atlantic cod
2022
According to the theory of compensatory dynamics, depleted populations should recover when the threat responsible for their decline is removed because per capita population growth is assumed to be highest when populations are at their smallest viable sizes. Yet, many seriously depleted fish populations have failed to recover despite threat mitigation. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) stocks off Newfoundland, despite 30 years of dramatically reduced fishing mortality and numerous fishery closures, have not recovered, suggesting that drivers other than fishing can regulate the growth of collapsed fish populations, inhibiting or preventing their recovery. Here, using Bayesian inference, we show str…
Valuation Effects of Listing on a More Prominent Segment of the Stock Market: Evidence from France
2002
We examine the behaviour of stock prices during the period around the transfer to the Marchea Reglement Mensuel. First, we discuss the financial reasons, which can justify abnormal returns around the transfer. Second, an event study based on a sample of 71 firms is set up to test the existence of the exchange listing effect on the French market. Third, we explore three hypotheses in order to explain the impact on stock returns: the informative content of the transfer, the increase in the relative size of the firm’s investor base, and the reduction of trading costs (immediacy and adverse selection). Cross–sectional regressions show that the increase in the relative size of the firm’s investo…
Reaccionan Completamente los Precios ante un Anuncio de Adquisiciin? Evidencia en el Mercado de Control de Empresas Espaaol (Do Prices Fully React to…
2013
This note examines whether prices fully reflect value creation or destruction at the time of the acquisition announcement when samples are split into listed and unlisted target firms as previous international results are ambiguous about this subject. We find that the Spanish market fully react to the acquisition announcement (showing value creation only for unlisted target firms acquisitions), except for the smallest bidders of public targets since we find significant positive abnormal returns for a 24-month post-acquisition window when event portfolio returns are computed equally-weighted but insignificant abnormal returns when value-weighted returns are computed. This evidence is consiste…

Nursery and field evaluation of eggplant grafted onto unrooted cuttings of Solanum torvum Sw.
2014
Abstract Solanum torvum is the eggplant ( Solanum melongena ) relative most commonly used for grafting even if the nursery production of eggplants grafted onto this rootstock has some issues related to its long, irregular and erratic germination and slow growth and development of seedlings. Unrooted cuttings harvested from stock plants could be an alternative propagation material to obtain S. torvum rootstocks and might allow to overcome nursery production issues for eggplant. The aim of this work was to evaluate eggplant suitability to be propagated by unrooted grafted cuttings using S. torvum as rootstock and the influence of this propagation technique on plant yield and fruit quality. A …
Absence of Toxoplasma gondii in 100% Iberian products from experimentally infected pigs cured following a specific traditional process.
2020
Infection with Toxoplasma gondii in humans has usually been related to the consumption of raw, undercooked or cured meat. Our study is based on the detection of T. gondii in cured legs and shoulders made from 100% Iberian sows fed mainly with acorn and raised as outdoor livestock in Aracena (Spain), which having been elaborated following a specific curing process (time period and location). An outdoor farm with a total of 636 animals was studied, showing a seroprevalence of 10% for the parasite T. gondii. Twenty individuals were chosen to be experimentally infected and slaughtered 60 days post-infection. Their legs and shoulders were processed to make 100% Iberian ham legs and shoulders. Th…
Application of microsatellite markers as potential tools for traceability of Girgentana goat breed dairy products
2015
In livestock, breed assignment may play a key role in the certification of products linked to specific breeds. Traceability of farm animals and authentication of their products can contribute to improve breed profitability and sustainability of animal productions with significant impact on the rural economy of particular geographic areas and on breed and biodiversity conservation. With the goal of developing a breed genetic traceability system for Girgentana dairy products, the aim of this study was to identify specific microsatellite markers able to discriminate among the most important Sicilian dairy goat breeds, in order to detect possible adulteration in Girgentana dairy products. A tot…
EFFECT OF DIFFERENT ROOTSTOCKS ON VEGETATIVE GROWTH OF JAPANESE AND EUROPEAN PLUM CULTIVARS IN SOUTHERN ITALY: PRELIMINARY RESULTS
2007
The preliminary results of a new rootstock trial for Japanese and European plum cultivars are reported. Two clonal Prunus cerasifera ('Myrobalan 29C' and 'MrS 2/5'), two Prunus domestica ('Penta' and 'Tetra') and the peach × almond 'GF 677' were tested in a warm and dry climate of Southern Italy where the plum industry is recently increasing, particularly for the Japanese type. 'GF 677' showed the most vigorous habit together with a higher production at the first bearing year in comparison with 'Myrobalan 29C', while the two P. domestica types resulted in very low vigour. This result was more evident and statistically significant with the Japanese plum cultivar, whereas very low differences…
