Species’ ecological functionality alters the outcome of fish stocking success predicted by a food-web model

Fish stocking is used worldwide in conservation and management, but its effects on food-web dynamics and ecosystem stability are poorly known. To better understand these effects and predict the outcomes of stocking, we used an empirically validated network model of a well-studied lake ecosystem. We simulate two stocking scenarios with two native fish species valuable for fishing. In the first scenario, we stock planktivorous fish (whitefish) larvae in the ecosystem. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of a polyglycolic acid (PGA) yarn implant for nonthermal ablation of saphenous vein reflux.In two consecutive cohort studies (TAHOE I and TAHOE II), the feasibility of abolition of great saphenous vein (GSV) reflux by implantation of a PGA yarn was tested under ultrasound guidance in 51 and 30 patients, respectively. The use of tumescent local anesthesia was not required. Congenital anomalies of the inferior vena cava is an extremely rare vascular anomaly with controversial pathogenesis. Anomalies of the inferior vena cava (IVC) are present in 0.3% to 0.5% of otherwise healthy individual and in 0.6% to 2% of patients with other cardiovascular defects. The phenomenon of absence of the IVC has been described in a variety of ways such as absence, agenesis, anomalous, and interruption of a particular segment ([infra] hepatic, pre-renal, renal, or infrarenal) of the IVC. Abstract Tagged 2-year-old trout smolts, Salmo trutta , were stocked into River Isojoki in 1996, 1997 and 1998 (a sea trout strain), and Lake Konnevesi in 1997 and 1998 (a brown trout strain) in April, May or June–July. Stocking dates were determined in respect to the migration activity of 100 PIT-tagged fish held in the laboratory. Migration activity was relatively similar in both trout forms each year. In April, movement activity was low; in May, movement activity of the PIT-tagged fish increased and in June–July, movement had ceased. The success of crayfish stocking in a dredged river with and without artificial shelter increase

Abstract The success of crayfish ( Astacus astacus L.) stocking in a heavily dredged river in Finland was compared between sections with and without artificial shelter. The materials used for creating shelter were a) broken rock and, b) ceramic drain pipes and perforated bricks. Group-marked crayfish (mean carapace length 42.6 mm) were released into the sections and test trappings conducted one year later. The highest crayfish densities were found in the broken rock sections. The reasons for the observed crayfish densities are discussed. No significant differences in growth between groups were detected. Migrations in the range of 2.5 km in one year were recorded.

Abstract Stocking with eggs has been widely used as a management measure to support degraded salmonid stocks. In Finland, Atlantic salmon and both sea-migrating and lake-migrating brown trout are stocked as eggs, alevins, fry, parr, and smolt, whereas trout are also stocked as mature fish. The aim of this stocking is to improve catches and to support collapsed spawning stocks. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of wearing various levels of compression following repeated and exhausting sprint exercise on variables related to recovery. Twelve well-trained handball players performed three sessions of repeated and exhausting sprint exercise (30 × 30m). Directly after each session the participants wore tights extending from below the hip to the foot with either 0, 10, or 25 mm Hg of compression onto the thigh and calf muscles. 48 h after the training session all participants performed 5 × 30m sprints and counter movement jumps.
