Stock assessement and management by restocking of Melicertus kerathurus (Forskäl, 1775) in the shallow coastal waters at Selinunte

From 1998 to 2010, monitoring was performed on the catch and fishing effort of Melicerctus kerathurus by the artisanal fleet based at the port at Marinella di Selinunte which operates in the wide gulf between Capo San Marco and Capo Granitola along the southwestern coast of Sicily. In 2004, a repopulation experiment with Melicerctus kerathurus post-larvae raised in an aquaculture plant from wild indigenous breeders was carried out in this area. The catch and cpue, in both number of specimens and in yield, were practically doubled in 2005. From 2006, catch and cpue returned to levels observed in the years prior to 2005. First results of a restocking project for Testudo hermanni in a protected area in northwestern Sicily. A restocking project was carried out in the Zingaro Natural Reserve in order to counteract the Sicilian population decrease of Testudo hermanni. 50 tortoises coming from regional wildlife rescue centers were released after an acclimatization period in a controlled fence. 11 tortoises have been provided with radio-transmitters to follow the dispersal process and to monitoring the project progress. Abstract The occurrence of Gyrodactylus salaris on Baltic salmon ( Salmo salar ), sea trout ( S. trutta m. trutta ) and brown trout ( S. trutta m. lacustris ) was examined from 1984 to 1993 at 4 fish farms (A, B, C and D) that produce smolts for stocking in northern Finland. No G. salaris was found on the sea or brown trout, but it did occur on salmon for 6–7 years at farms B, C and D, the prevalences of infection being 9.5%, 17.7% and 8.8% for salmon yearlings and smolts during that time, respectively, but less than 1.2% for fingerlings at farms B and C. European populations of the freshwater pearl mussel (FPM, Margaritifera margaritifera) have widely collapsed, and despite many types of conservation actions the number of successful restoration trials has remained limited. The goal of this study was to find new aspects for the conservation by investigating whether there are population-specific differences in suitability of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and brown trout (S. trutta) as the hosts for the parasitic glochidium larvae of FPM, depending probably on the historical occurrence of these salmonid species in FPM habitats. 2. Long-term effects of graduated compression stockings on cardiorespiratory performance

ABSTRACT: The use of graduated compression stockings (GCS) in sport has been increasing in the last years due to their potential positive effects for athletes. However, there is little evidence to support whether these types of garments actually improve cardiorespiratory performance. The aim of this study was to examine the cardiorespiratory responses of GCS during running after three weeks of regular use.
