Measurement of the transverse Doppler shift using a stored relativistic7Li+ ion beam

We have performed for the first time precision spectroscopy on a coasting fast7Li+ ion beam in a storage ring. The ion beam moving with 6.4% speed of light was first electron cooled and then merged with two counterpropagating laser beams acting on two different hyperfine transitions sharing a common upper level (λ-system). One laser was frequency locked to thea 3 127J2 hfs frequency component established as a secondary frequency standard at 514 nm. The second laser was tuned over theλ-resonance, which was recorded relative to127J2 hfs components. Precision measurement of two iodine lines at 585 nm and 549 nm

The transition frequencies of thei-component of the R(99)15-1 and thew-component of the R(85)26-0 transition in the B-X system of molecular127I2 have been determined with an overall relative standard uncertainty of 1.3 · 10−10. For this purpose a commercial linear dye laser has been modified and stabilized to the corresponding iodine line. This dye laser serves as a transportable frequency standard which is compared with the wavelength standards of the PTB. The evaluation of an experiment for testing special relativity at the test storage ring (TSR) in Heidelberg is based on the precision of the reported interferometric wavelength comparison.

A linear radiofrequency quadrupole ion trap for the cooling and bunching of radioactive ion beams

A linear radiofrequency quadrupole ion guide and beam buncher has been installed at the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometry experiment at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The apparatus is being used as a beam cooling, accumulation, and bunching system. It operates with a buffer gas that cools the injected ions and converts the quasicontinuous 60- keV beam from the ISOLDE facility to 2.5-keV beam pulses with improved normalized transverse emittance. Recent measurements suggest a capture efficiency of the ion guide of up to 40% and a cooling and bunching efficiency of at least 12% which is expected to still be increased. Test of special relativity in an ion storage ring

An accurate measurement of the Doppler effect in collinear laser spectroscopy has been performed at the TSR storage ring with electron cooled7Li+ ions atΒ=0.064. This experiment is a sensitive test of theγ=(1−Β2)−1/2 factor(Β=v/c) in the special theory of relativity. The Doppler shifted frequencies of the moving7Li+ ions are compared with calibrated molecular lines at rest. The frequencies at rest for the7Li+ ions are known from independent measurements. The Doppler shifted frequencies in the collinear experiment have been measured with a precision ofδv/v=6×10−9, mainly limited by the signal width of the resonance. Laser ion beam production at CERN-ISOLDE: New features – More possibilities

Abstract This article summarizes the current specifications and the latest features of the CERN-ISOLDE resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS). This includes a description of the optical layout and the newly designed reference system. The ionization schemes for the laser ionized beams at ISOLDE are tabulated, including six new elements. All RILIS schemes are also made publicly available in the RILIS elements on-line database. Development and test of iron-free quadrupole lenses with high magnetic flux densities

Abstract Iron-free magnetic quadrupole lenses have been developed for the focusing of energetic bunched heavy-ion beams. These devices are operated in a pulsed mode and provide very strong magnetic fields. A magnetic flux density of more than 14 T has been reached in a 100 mm long quadrupole with a 20 mm wide aperture, which corresponds to a magnetic flux density of ∼1400 T/m. The pulse duration of the applied electric current is approximately 300 μs with a flat top of several μs. The calculated and measured field properties of the quadrupoles are presented. Precision measurement of the Λ+c baryon mass

The $\Lambda_c^+$ baryon mass is measured using $\Lambda_c^+\to\Lambda K^0_S K^+$ and $\Lambda_c^+\to\Sigma^0 K^0_S K^+$ decays reconstructed in 232 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ storage ring. The $\Lambda_c^+$ mass is measured to be $2286.46\pm0.14\mathrm{MeV}/c^2$. The dominant systematic uncertainties arise from the amount of material in the tracking volume and from the magnetic field strength.

Search for the decayB0→J/ψγ

We present the results of a search for the radiative decay B0 --> J/psi gamma in a data set containing 123 million Y(4S)--> B B-bar decays, collected by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- storage ring at SLAC. We find no evidence for a signal and place an upper limit of B(B0 --> J/psi gamma) < 1.6 x 10^-6 at 90% confidence level.

Time-integrated and time-dependent angular analyses ofB→J/ψKπ: A measurement ofcos2βwith no sign ambiguity from strong phases

We present results on B -> J/yKp decays using e+e-annihilation data collected with the BABAR detector at the U(4S) resonance. The detector is located at the PEP-II asym.-energy storage ring facility at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. Using approx. 88*106 B-B pairs, we measure the decay amplitudes for the flavor eigenmodes and observe strong-phase differences indicative of final-state interactions with a significance of 7.6 std. deviations. We use the interference between the Kp S-wave and P-wave amplitudes in the region of the K*(892) to resolve the ambiguity in the detn. of these strong phases.
