The present paper aims at analyzing the unrest of the tribes located in the south of the province of Africa and of the reign of Mauretania, that escaped Roman authority. In particular, the research dwells on the hostilities undertaken by the Gaetulians under the principate of Augustus, such as to determine the intervention of the proconsul of Africa Cossus Cornelius Lentulus, given the magnitude of the bellum and in view of the fact that the king of Mauretania Juba II was unable to quell the con+ict. A confrontation between epigraphic and literary sources is necessary to reconstruct the proconsular list of Asia for the mid reign of Marcus Aurelius (168-173 AD): in those years the province Asia was directly involved in Marcus' wars against barbarian raiders, especially the bellum Germanicum et Sarmaticum on the Danube (169-175) and the raids of Costobocs in the Balkans and Bastarnae in Anatolia (170-171). Nei frammenti di Prisco la crisi della pars Occidentis dell’impero è connessa con la divisione delle due partes imperii, un fattore che fu poi ripreso da Montesquieu quale causa di decadenza. Le testimonianze di Prisco, anche attraverso la tradizione storiografica successiva che attinse allo storico di Panion, consentono di ripercorre in questa prospettiva le vicende occidentali a partire dai soccorsi orientali alla Sicilia nel 441, in difficoltà per le prime incursioni gensericiane, alle operazioni sul fronte unno che videro la collaborazione fra Oriente e Occidente, alla riapertura del fronte vandalico fra 455 e 468.

Si trattava di una vittoria che vedeva legate Costantinopoli, che confermava il suo ruolo di primazia nell’ambito delle chiese orientali, e Roma che già con papa Leone aveva manifestato il suo accordo con il patriarcato costantinopolitano.
