Il demos in Erodiano

In Herodian’s historical view the demos appears to play an important political role in critical stages of the Roman empire. The political success of an emperor depends on the popular approval in Rome or in the provincial cities, besides the support of the soldiers. The analysis of the words demos and ochlos, used by Herodian with different values, reveals that the historian cannot be defined filo-popular, but shows throughout interest in the popular participation in civil struggles.

The essay aims to evaluate the relationship between demos and armies, between demos and senate from Commodus to Maximinus, and to analyze the differences in this chronological period. The use of the words demos and ochlos, in Herodian’ s historical work, has different values: it reveals that the historian cannot be defined philo-popular, but shows throughout interest in the popular partecipation in civil struggles.

This paper aims at depicting the historical and administrative geography of Tripolis on the Maeander (Lydia, Anatolia) within the Roman province Asia since its institution (129 B.C.) up to the provincial reform of Diocletian (late 3rd cent. A.D.). Tripolis traditionally belonged to the south-eastern part of Lydia, which in the Lykos Valley, and especially along the Maeander’s stream, met and mingled with Caria and Phrygia.
