EBSD, XRD and SRS characterization of a casting Al-7wt%Si alloy processed by equal channel angular extrusion: Dislocation density evaluation

2019

Abstract Aluminum‑silicon (Al Si) alloys of high silicon contents are composite materials; they are used whenever high casting properties are required. They are slightly ductile below 8wt%Si. An increase in ductility can be obtained by refining Si-crystals in elaboration or by a further hot working. In the present work, an Al-7wt%Si alloy was processed by Equal Channel Angular Extrusion (ECAE) at temperatures 20 °C and 160 °C up to three passes. The die was formed by two cylindrical channels with characteristic angles Φ = 110° and Ψ = 0. EBSD, X ray diffraction (XRD) and Strain Rate Sensitivity (SRS) were used to characterize the microstructure and the mechanical properties. High levels of …

Strain detection in non-magnetic steel by Kerr-microscopy of magnetic tracer layers

2018

Abstract For many applications of steel, e.g. for the evaluation of the fatigue state of components or structures, the characterization of the microscopic strain distribution in the material is important. We present a proof-of-principle for the visualization of such strain distributions by Kerr-microscopy of ferromagnetic tracer layers on nonmagnetic steel sheets. The influence of indentation induced strain on the magnetic domain pattern of 20 nm Galfenol and Permalloy tracer layers on austenitic AISI 904L steel sheets was investigated. The obtained Kerr-microscopy images show a characteristic domain pattern in the strained regions of the steel sheets, which is consistent with a dominant ma…

Reversed polarized emission in highly strained a-plane GaN/AlN multiple quantum wells

2010

The polarization of the emission from a set of highly strained $a$-plane GaN/AlN multiple quantum wells of varying well widths has been studied. A single photoluminescence peak is observed that shifts to higher energies as the quantum well thickness decreases due to quantum confinement. The emitted light is linearly polarized. For the thinnest samples the preferential polarization direction is perpendicular to the wurtzite $c$ axis with a degree of polarization that decreases with increasing well width. However, for the thickest well the preferred polarization direction is parallel to the $c$ axis. Raman scattering, x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy studies have been p…

Strain rate dependence for evolution of steady state grain sizes: Insights from high-strain experiments on ice

2019

Abstract Understanding of the microstructural evolution and equilibrium grain size development during steady state tertiary flow is essential in order to improve our knowledge of ice and rock deformation. This contribution presents results from in situ transmitted light deformation experiments of natural glacier ice, with the development of the microstructure in a tertiary flow regime. We conducted one relative slower ( 1 × 10 − 6 1/s) and two relative faster-strain rate ( 2 × 10 − 6 1/s) pure shear experiments at −10 °C, up to a shortening of ∼57%. Microstructure development was followed by time-lapse observations, and two new microstructure-based indicators, the ‘seeding rate’ and the ‘mi…

Effect of strain rate cycling on microstructures and crystallographic preferred orientation during high-temperature creep

2016

Strain rate histories and strain magnitude are two crucial factors governing the evolution of dynamic recrystallized grain size and crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) in rocks and ice masses. To understand the effect of cyclic variations in strain rate or non-steady-state deformation, we conducted two-dimensional, coaxial plane strain experiments with time-lapse observations from a fabric analyzer. There is a continuous reequilibration of microstructure and CPO development associated with constant and oscillating strain rate cycles. These can be correlated with c -axis small circle distributions, diagnostic of dynamic recrystallization involving new grain nucleation and grain boun…

Ductile strain rate measurements document long-term strain localization in the continental crust

2013

cited By 24; Quantification of strain localization in the continental lithosphere is hindered by the lack of reliable deformation rate measurements in the deep crust. Quartz-strain-rate-metry (QSR) is a convenient tool for performing such measurements once calibrated. We achieve this calibration by identifying the best piezometer-rheological law pairs that yield a strain rate in agreement with that measured on the same outcrop by a more direct method taken as a reference. When applied to two major continental strike-slip shear zones, the Ailao Shan-Red River (ASRR; southwest China) and the Karakorum (northwest India), the calibrated QSR highlights across-strike strain rate variations, from …

The influence of rock heterogeneity on the scaling properties of simulated and natural stylolites

2009

International audience; Stylolites are among the most prominent deformation patterns in sedimentary rocks that document localized pressure solution. Recent studies revealed that stylolite roughness is characterized by two distinct scaling regimes. The main goal of the present study is to decipher whether this complex scaling behavior of stylolites is caused by the composition of the host-rock, i.e. heterogeneities in the material, or is governed by inherent processes on respective scales, namely the transition from a surface energy to an elastic energy dominated regime, as theoretically predicted. For this purpose we have developed a discrete numerical technique, based on a lattice spring m…

Aseismic strain episodes at Campi Flegrei Caldera, Italy

2021

Since 2004 a research project has been developed to monitor subsurface deformation of Italian volcanoes using borehole strainmeters and long-baseline tiltmeters. Six Sacks-Evertson dilatometers were installed around Campi Flegrei caldera and Vesuvius during 2004–2005 (Scarpa et al., 2007), and in 2008 these instruments were supplemented by two arrays of 28–280 m long water-tube tiltmeters in underground tunnels. Relevant strainmeter and tiltmeter data have been collected and analysed from the instruments installed near Campi Flegrei caldera during the recent unrest episodes. In the period 2004–2005 strain, tilt and GPS data from Campi Flegrei indicate the onset of surface deformation that a…

Lowering histamine formation in a red Ribera del Duero wine (Spain) by using an indigenous O. oeni strain as a malolactic starter

2016

This study demonstrates for the first time that a non-commercial selected autochthonous O. oeni strain has been used to conduct malolactic fermentation (MLF) while lowering histamine formation in the same winery. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated from 13 vats before and after spontaneous MLF at the Pago de Carraovejas winery from the Ribera del Duero region (Spain). Only O. oeni were present, typed and characterized, and both histamine producer and non-producers existed. From the non-producers, one strain was selected to become a starter according to its genetic profile, prevalence in the different wines in the winery, resistance to alcoholic degree, resistance to high polyphenolic c…
