Variation in Susceptibility to Bacillus thuringiensis Toxins among Unselected Strains of Plutella xylostella

2001

ABSTRACT So far, the only insect that has evolved resistance in the field to Bacillus thuringiensis toxins is the diamondback moth ( Plutella xylostella ). Documentation and analysis of resistant strains rely on comparisons with laboratory strains that have not been exposed to B. thuringiensis toxins. Previously published reports show considerable variation among laboratories in responses of unselected laboratory strains to B. thuringiensis toxins. Because different laboratories have used different unselected strains, such variation could be caused by differences in bioassay methods among laboratories, genetic differences among unselected strains, or both. Here we tested three unselected st…

Coercion

2004

Identification of Lactobacilli from Deep Carious Lesions by Means of Species-Specific PCR and MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

2014

SUMMARY Background: The aim of the present study was to compare MALDI-TOF results for the identification of 87 lactobacilli, isolated from soft or hard carious dentin from 70 first molars of 7- to 8-year-old children with those obtained by species-specific PCR. Methods: The 87 isolates were analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS (Microflex LT, MALDI Biotyper 3.0, Bruker Daltonik, Bremen, Germany), using a reference data base of 4110 strains including > 90 lactobacillus species. For the identification with species-specific PCR, oligonucleotide primers (16S rRNA) specific for L. casei, L. paracasei, L. rhamnosus, L. gasseri, L. plantarum, and L. acidophilus were used; type strains served as controls. The P…

Dynamic Gaussian Graphical Models for Modelling Genomic Networks

2014

After sequencing the entire DNA for various organisms, the challenge has become understanding the functional interrelatedness of the genome. Only by understanding the pathways for various complex diseases can we begin to make sense of any type of treatment. Unfortunately, decyphering the genomic network structure is an enormous task. Even with a small number of genes the number of possible networks is very large. This problem becomes even more difficult, when we consider dynamical networks. We consider the problem of estimating a sparse dynamic Gaussian graphical model with \(L_1\) penalized maximum likelihood of structured precision matrix. The structure can consist of specific time dynami…

On-board Energy Consumption Assessment for Symbolic Execution Models on Embedded Devices

2020

Internet of Things (IoT) applications operate in several domains while requiring seamless integration among heterogeneous objects. Regardless of the specific platform and context, IoT applications demand high energy efficiency. Adopting resource-constrained embedded devices for IoT applications means ensuring low power consumption, low maintenance costs and possibly longer battery life. Meeting these requirements is particularly arduous as programmers are not able to monitor the energy consumption of their own software during development or when applications are finally deployed. In this paper, we discuss on-board real-time energy evaluation of both hardware and software during the developm…

Chemical and Spectroscopical Properties of Medium Sizedtrans- andcis-Bicyclo[n.1.0]alk-2-ynes

1997

Chemical and spectroscopical properties of cis- and trans-cyclopropano-anellated cycloalkynes of medium ring size are investigated and compared with results from force field calculations. IR and 13C-NMR data of the alkynes reflect the deformation of the triple bond due to ring strain. Parallel to bending the reactivity increases with decreasing ring size, the trans fused alkynes prove to be nearly as reactive as the cis fused with a two carbon smaller ring size. The bicycloalkynes are complexed with silver triflate. 13C NMR reveals that the triple bond as well as the cyclopropane serve as ligands.

Directionnalité graphique et dominance manuelle : une perspective développementale et interculturelle

2012

In the present work, we try to provide some understanding about the factors underlying the directional tendencies, by examining the impact of biomechanical constraints and cultural habits on directionality in graphic movements. French and Syrian subjects, children and adults, were compared in six experiments in order, to put in evidence the cognitive and psychomotor differences caused by the fact that the Eastern and Western cultures oppose on the directionality of writing and reading habits, and that the two hands are opposite in the directionality by adopting movements determined by biomechanical constraints. Likewise, this comparison allowed us to determine the relative strength of these…

Sedimentation properties of chitosomal chitin synthetase from the wild-type strain and the 'slime' variant of Neurospora crassa.

1989

Marked differences in the pattern of sedimentation of cellular structures were observed after isopycnic centrifugation of crude cell-free preparations from the Neurospora crassa wall-less 'slime' variant and mycelial wild-type strain. Kinetic studies of particle sedimentation showed that the various types of subcellular components, as revealed by turbidity, UV absorption, polypeptide patterns, and chitin synthetase activity determinations, sediment independently of one another. An important feature was the finding that chitin synthetase from 'slime' peaked at a median specific gravity of 1.1201 +/- 0.0036, whereas that from wild-type strain sedimented at a higher buoyant density (specific g…

αv-Class integrin binding to fibronectin is solely mediated by RGD and unaffected by an RGE mutation.

2020

Fibronectin (FN) is an essential glycoprotein of the extracellular matrix; binds integrins, syndecans, collagens, and growth factors; and is assembled by cells into complex fibrillar networks. The RGD motif in FN facilitates cell binding and fibrillogenesis through binding to α5β1 and αv-class integrins. However, whether RGD is the sole binding site for αv-class integrins is unclear. Most notably, substituting aspartate with glutamate (RGE) was shown to eliminate integrin binding in vitro, while mouse genetics revealed that FNRGE preserves αv-class integrin binding and fibrillogenesis. To address this conflict, we employed single-cell force spectroscopy, engineered cells, and RGD motif–defi…
