Designing for Networked Community Resilience

2016

Abstract Communities have been described to be at the heart of the preparedness for and the response to disasters. The increasing connectedness has made communities more vulnerable for their dependence on a complex network of critical infrastructures. At the same time, this very connectedness has the potential to enable communities to self-organise, engage, and connect with other communities to improve their resilience. While the pathway to more resilience is promising and has many advocates, the response to crises and disasters, time and again reveals the challenges related to (i) ad-hoc switching from preparedness to response; (ii) ad-hoc connecting professional responders, communities, v…

Benchmarking in Romanian industrial environment

2017

Benchmarking is a managerial tool that can assist the organizational change and the innovation. The paper aims to discover the degree in which Romanian managers in various industrial fields use this modern tool in the improvement of business strategy or organizational processes. In this context, we presented some results of a selective research made in Romanian industrial environment. The respondents were experts in creativity management and benchmarking, acting in big, medium or small enterprises. They offered many solutions for increase the rate of use of benchmarking and creativity couple in the management of Romanian organizations.

Risk Assessment of a compound feed process based on HAZOP analysis and linguistic terms

2016

[EN] The size and complexity of industrial plants, along with the characteristics of the products used, require a study, analysis and control of the existing risks in every industrial process. In this paper, a methodology for risk assessment in industrial plants, based on the combination of risks identification through the Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) analysis and the risks evaluation through linguistic variables and fuzzy numbers is applied to a case study consisting on a compound feed plant located in the town of Silla (Valencia, Spain). The results from this study show that the main risk in the compound feed production process is the formation of explosive atmospheres (ATEX). Therefore…

Incremental dynamic based fragility assessment of reinforced concrete structures: Stationary vs. non-stationary artificial ground motions

2017

Abstract Artificial and natural records are commonly employed by researches and practitioners to perform refined seismic assessments of structures. The techniques for the generation of artificial records and their effectiveness in producing signals which are significantly representative of real earthquakes are still debated as well as results of the consequent seismic assessment to expect from their application. The paper presents an in-depth comparative study highlighting the effect of employing different typologies of artificial ground motion records on seismic assessment results, especially addressing seismic fragility curves. Three sets of 50 stationary, nonstationary evenly modulated a…

Evaluation to support stakeholder centered design and continuous quality improvement in higher education services

2014

Abstract: Evaluation and self-evaluation procedures are commonly used in educational institutions to measure education services and research performance. This chapter describes the main opportunities that evaluation-based approaches can produce to support processes of design and continuous quality improvement in higher education institutions in the light of recent normative measures in Italy to address quality aspects of education services. Subsequently, a new approach – based on the ServQual conceptual model – that evaluates education services is used to carry out a strategic analysis of education services at the management engineering program at the University of Palermo, Italy.

An integrated and shared approach to sea of the regional town master plan of Sicily

2006

The work addresses one of the most important problems in contemporary environmental land planning. Already existing procedures, in fact, must now conform to the new requirements imposed by the recent national and international regulations and standards that call for a more conscious approach to the use of natural resources. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), for example, takes into account, the different effects of a plan in various fields such as the environment, the economy and the development. This obviously calls for global analysis tools that could help administrators, stakeholders and technicians in the decision-making process of such complex systems. SEA of the Town Master Pla…

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PARADIGM SHIFT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN INDUSTRY AND DESIGN EDUCATION

2015

Literature about design development and the current situation of the essence of trends in this field allow for the defining of design as an independent branch. Analysis of design and education regulations highlights the conflict between reality and gaps that exist in European statistical standards and International Standard Classification of Education. The purpose of this study is to explore complex problems in the field of design and design education which determines the need for Paradigm Shift for further development of these branches, as well as to present proposals for definitions of key terms of design and offer proposals for a new design education classification. This research will sh…

Developments Around the Activity-Based Costing Method: A State-of-the Art Literature Review

2007

This paper analyzes the management accounting applications which try to improve the Activity-based Costing method. In the first part, we describe them using the Strategic Management Accounting stream. Then, we present the main features of these applications. In the second part, we examine in detail two of these features: The widening of the analysis perimeter and the relevant level of details to analyze the costs. Finally, we analyze several proposals: Customer-driven ABC, Inter-organizational Cost Management, Resource Consumption Accounting and Time-driven ABC.

Coherence of Work Based Learning and Regional Development in Latvia

2014

Integration of young people into the labour market is an issue of a high priority. The youth unemployment problem has explicit links to the vocational education and training (VET) system. Since 2009 there is an ongoing reform in the Latvian VET system. In this respect also the role of local governments increases. The paper addresses the issue of introducing innovative approaches in the Latvian VET system. The aim of the study is to estimate the overall readiness of public administrations to implement VET reforms within regional economic development in the context of the EU and national strategic priorities.

Intelligent Collaborative Platform for Testing a Product by Virtual Prototyping

2013

This paper presents an integrated platform, based on collaborative environment, which can improve the design and prototyping activities. Collaborative activities in supporting product development and design during all product life-cycle, needs a Digital Factory framework. Demonstration of prototyping in real-time where are available changes in geometry, constraints, or other parameters can be based on virtual and augmented platforms. The mechanical and non-mechanical design needs, or any other virtual experiment can be experimented in virtual laboratory where researchers located in different geographical zones, can work on the improvement of product, by sharing resources and research result…
