The trilobite species of three genera included in the Family Solenopleuridae: Parasolenopleura , Badulesia , and Pardailhania are revised. These genera have a great biostratigraphic interest due to their broad distribution in the Miaolingian Series (former middle Cambrian) of the Mediterranean Subprovince and because they constitute an evolutionary lineage, that facilitates an accurate regional correlation. The end of the Messinian Salinity Crisis in the western Mediterranean: insights from the carbonate platforms of south-eastern Spain.

International audience; How the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) ended is still a matter of intense debate. The Terminal Carbonate Complex (TCC) is a late Messinian carbonate platform system that recorded western Mediterranean hydrological changes from the final stages of evaporite deposition till the advent of Lago-Mare fresh- to brackish water conditions at the very end of Messinian times. A multidisciplinary study has been carried out in three localities in south-eastern Spain to reconstruct the history of TCC platforms and elucidate their significance in the MSC. Middle Miocene foraminifera from Canals (Valencia, western Mediterranean). Biostratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental aspects

The age and the palaeoenvironmental conditions of the tap marls outcroppings near the locality of Canals in the south of the Valencia Province (E Spain) are discussed. Based on the planktonic foraminifera assemblages, mainly the species Globorotalia praemenardii , these tap marls are dated as Serravallian in age (middle Miocene). The analysis of the foraminiferal assemblages suggests a relatively well-ventilated uppermiddle bathyal environment, with only a moderate oxygen deficiency throughout most of the studied section. Benthic foraminifera and environmental changes in the Quaternary of the western Mediterranean coast: the core of Xeraco, Valencia, Spain

The evolution of the benthic foraminiferal assemblages from a 60 m core drilled in the Quaternary lagoon of Xeraco (Valencia, Spain) is studied. Two moments of warm climate, high sea-level and maximal marine influence in the lagoon have been identified. The first one at the base of the core, punctuated by highly frequent changes during the Upper Pleistocene, and the other one in the upper end of the series during the Holocene. The presence of a middle core section with low diversity and a nearly total absence of marine foraminifers is interpreted as a regressive interval of cold climate conditions linked to a glacial stage.

Cerro del Hierro, Spain: the largest exposed early Cambrian palaeokarst

AbstractWe study the largest exposed example of an early Cambrian palaeokarst, associated with laterites and developed during rifting of the Ossa–Morena Zone. The lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, facies and the genesis reflect episodes of sea-level fall (Cerro del Hierro Regression) related to tectonic events and palaeoclimate. This palaeokarst can be primarily considered as the result of early Cambrian polyphase karstification in an extensional tectonic regime, later modified by Neogene–Quaternary geomorphological processes. Abstract Three major paleoenvironmental changes have been recognized during the late Miocene to Early Pliocene in the Melilla Basin (Northeastern Morocco) and compared with the regional events that affected the Mediterranean hydrology during this crucial period. Mineralogy and chemistry of cobbles at Meridiani Planum, Mars, investigated by the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity

Numerous loose rocks with dimensions of a few centimeters to tens of centimeters and with no obvious physical relationship to outcrop rocks have been observed along the traverse of the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity. To date, about a dozen of these rocks have been analyzed with Opportunity’s contact instruments, providing information about elemental chemistry (Alpha Particle X‐ray Spectrometer), iron mineralogy and oxidation states (Mossbauer Spectrometer) and texture (Microscopic Imager). Exploration of Victoria Crater by the Mars Rover Opportunity

“Lake” Victoria? After having explored the Eagle and Endurance craters, which are separated by only 800 meters, the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity spent 2 years at Victoria, a much larger impact crater located 6 kilometers south across Meridiani Planum. Sedimentary rocks previously analyzed at Eagle and Endurance point to local environmental conditions that included abundant liquid water in the ancient past. Now, an analysis of rocks in the walls of Victoria by Squyres et al. (p. 1058 ) reveals that the aqueous alteration processes that operated at Eagle and Endurance also acted at Victoria.
