In Sicily, the common woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca) is spontaneous in the Madonie Mountains (554 m a.s.l.), Nebrodi Mountains (850 m) and Mount Etna (900 m). In this region, the main clone cultivated is 'Fragolina di Sciacca e Ribera', named after the towns where the crop originally developed. It is a Junebearing genotype and it is characterized by very small fruits, globose-conical shape, deep red colour, very soft flesh, strong aroma and flavor. Sorption and degradation are the primary processes controlling the efficacy and runoff contamination risk of agrochemicals. This study assessed the influence of two biochars, made from woodchips and straw at a pyrolysis temperature of 725°C and applied to a loamy sand and a sandy soil in the concentration of 5.3 g 100 g(-1) sandy soil and 4.1 g 100 g(-1) loamy sand soil, or 53 t ha(-1) for both soil types, on degradation of the herbicide 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA). Abstract This paper describes a study of fed-batch SSFR (simultaneous saccharification, fermentation and recovery) for butanol production from alkaline-pretreated rice straw (RS) in a 2-L stirred tank reactor. The initial solid (9.2% w/v) and enzyme (19.9 FPU g-dw-1) loadings were previously optimized by 50-mL batch SSF assays. Maximum butanol concentration of 24.80 g L-1 was obtained after three biomass feedings that doubled the RS load (18.4% w/v). Butanol productivity (0.344 g L-1h−1) also increased two-fold in comparison with batch SSF without recovery (0.170 g L-1h−1). The objective of the study was to investigate a more effective use of commercially available biomass pellets (wheat straw, wood, peat) using microwave pretreatment to improve heat production. Pellets were pretreated using the originally designed microwave torrefaction device. Abstract Small scale air-blown fluidized bed gasification of alfalfa and wheat straw pellets were conducted for semi-continuous solid feeding and range of operating conditions varied due to the modifications in equivalence ratio (ER) (0.20–0.35) achieved both by varying solid and air input. This study compares the effects of soil solarization and methyl bromide fumigation on the growth and yield of strawberry plants (Fragaria xananassa Duch.) cultivated under plastic tunnel conditions. The study was conducted in a Mediterranean coastal area, in four consecutive annual production cycles in a field with no history of methyl bromide fumigation and 2-year history of strawberry production. In all 4 years, solarization was conducted for 7- to 9-week intervals from late June to early September.
