Scanning electron microscopic and X ray microanalysis study of the mineral deposits in pseudoxanthoma elasticum.
1977
A skin biopsy of a 37 year old man with typical lesions of pseudoxanthoma clasticum (P.E.) associated with angioid streaks (Groenblad-Strandberg Syndrom) was examined with a scanning E. M. (SEM) and a SEM provided with a X ray micro-analyser. The SEM provided with X ray microanalyser enabled us to see the correspondence between the crystalline deposits and a calcium salt. The potassium, sodium and magnesium analysis of the specimen permits us to verify that the P.E. dermis is rich in K and poor in Mg.
Model simulations with COSMO-SPECS: impact of heterogeneous freezing modes and ice nucleating particle types on ice formation and precipitation in a …
2018
Abstract. In deep convective clouds, heavy rain is often formed involving the ice phase. Simulations were performed using the 3-D cloud resolving model COSMO-SPECS with detailed spectral microphysics including parameterizations of homogeneous and three heterogeneous freezing modes. The initial conditions were selected to result in a deep convective cloud reaching 14 km of altitude with strong updrafts up to 40 m s−1. At such altitudes with corresponding temperatures below −40 ∘C the major fraction of liquid drops freezes homogeneously. The goal of the present model simulations was to investigate how additional heterogeneous freezing will affect ice formation and precipitation although its c…
Origin and Flow History of Air Parcels in Orographic Banner Clouds
2015
Abstract Banner clouds are clouds in the lee of steep mountains or sharp ridges. Previous work suggests that the main formation mechanism is vertical uplift in the lee of the mountain. On the other hand, little is known about the Lagrangian behavior of air parcels as they pass the mountain, which motivates the current investigation. Three different diagnostics are applied in the framework of large-eddy simulations of airflow past an isolated pyramid-shaped obstacle: Eulerian tracers indicating the initial positions of the parcels, streamlines along the time-averaged wind field, and online trajectories computed from the instantaneous wind field. All three methods diagnose a plume of large ve…
Simple kinematic models for the environmental interaction of tropical cyclones in vertical wind shear
2011
A major impediment to the intensity forecast of tropical cyclones (TCs) is believed to be associated with the interaction of TCs with dry environmental air. However, the conditions under which pronounced TC-environment interaction takes place are not well understood. As a step towards improving our understanding of this problem, we analyze here the flow topology of a TC immersed in an environment of vertical wind shear in an idealized, three-dimensional, convection-permitting numerical experiment. A set of distinct streamlines, the so-called manifolds, can be identified under the assumptions of steady and layer-wise horizontal flow. The manifolds are shown to divide the flow around the TC i…
<title>Two-dimensional and dynamic (2DD) method of visualization of the flow characteristics in a convection boundary layer using infrared ther…
2000
The paper presents the 2D and dynamic (2DD) method of using infrared (IR) thermography for the visualization of the cooling efficiency of a heated wall, as this method was applied in an experimental investigation. The 2DD method allows the outer surface temperature measured by the IR thermography device to be worked out relative to the bulk coolant-fluid temperature. In this way the 2DD method makes visible the qualitative and quantitative flow characteristics within the thin contact layers at the inner surface of the wall. This flow characteristics, and more specifically the pattern of stream lines (for the detection of dead zones) and the distribution of the temperature differences betwee…
Anti-Atherosclerotic Effect of a Polyphenol-Rich Ingredient, Oleactiv
2018
The development of nutraceutical ingredients has risen as a nutritional solution for health prevention. This study evaluated the effects of Oleactiv®, an ingredient developed for the prevention of atherogenesis, in hypercholesterolemic hamsters. Oleactiv® is a polyphenol-rich ingredient obtained from artichoke, olive and grape extracts as part of fruit and vegetables commonly consumed within the Mediterranean diet. A total of 21 Golden Syrian hamsters were divided into three groups. The standard group (STD) was fed a normolipidemic diet for 12 weeks, while the control group (CTRL) and Oleactiv® goup (OLE) were fed a high-fat diet. After sacrifice, the aortic fatty streak area (AFSA), plasma…
Angioid streak-related choroidal neovascularization treated by intravitreal ranibizumab.
2010
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to report the visual outcome of intravitreal therapy with ranibizumab of choroidal neovascularization secondary to angioid streaks after 1-year follow-up. METHODS Nine patients (age, 58 +/- 4 years; range, 53-65 years) were treated with off-label intravitreal injections of 0.3 mg ranibizumab. Primary outcomes were best-corrected visual acuity changes (Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution and letters) and optical coherence tomography macular thickness changes. RESULTS Mean follow-up was 14 months (+/-2; range, 12-18 months). Mean visual acuity was 0.52 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution and 30 …
The association between dermoscopic features and BRAF mutational status in cutaneous melanoma: Significance of the blue-white veil.
2018
Background: The genetic basis of melanoma affects its clinicopathologic characteristics and increasingly influences its management. B-Raf proto-oncogene, serine/threonine kinase gene (BRAF)-mutated melanoma may present with specific dermoscopic features. Objectives: To identify the dermoscopic features associated with BRAF mutation in cutaneous melanoma and to evaluate a model capable of predicting BRAF mutations on the basis of dermoscopic and clinicopathologic features that are easily accessible in normal clinical practice. Methods: A prospective, cross-sectional, observational, and descriptive study was performed. A total of 93 cutaneous melanomas with dermoscopic images from 93 patients…
Anisotropic potential of velocity fields in real fluids: Application to the MAST solution of shallow water equations
2013
In the present paper it is first shown that, due to their structure, the general governing equations of uncompressible real fluids can be regarded as an "anisotropic" potential flow problem and closed streamlines cannot occur at any time. For a discretized velocity field, a fast iterative procedure is proposed to order the computational elements at the beginning of each time level, allowing a sequential solution element by element of the advection problem. Some closed circuits could appear due to the discretization error and the elements involved in these circuits could not be ordered. We prove in the paper that the total flux of these not ordered elements goes to zero by refining the compu…
The Participation of the Complement System in Atherosclerotic Vascular Disease
1991
Atherosclerosis is a vascular disease of large and medium-sized arteries wherein the tunica intima becomes thickened due to lipid accumulation, mostly cholesterol and its esters, smooth muscle cell proliferation, and increased deposition of connective tissue matrix. A major risk factor in the development of this disease is hypercholesterolemia arising from elevated levels of low density lipoproteins (LDL). The earliest recognizable lesion, which may be a precursor to the fibrofatty plaque, is the fatty streak. It is predominantly composed of monocyte-derived macrophage foam cells, i.e. cells ladened with intracellular lipid droplets. Hence, a fundamental aspect of atherogenesis is the insud…
