Monthly Hydrological Indicators to Assess Possible Alterations on Rivers’ Flow Regime

2018

Assessing potential deviations of the fundamental river basins’ hydrological processes and streamflow characteristics from the “natural trajectory” represents a high-priority objective to understand the biological impact of altered flow regime on river ecosystems. Existing approaches are mainly based on the analysis of daily-based indicators of hydrologic alteration, which requires wide database, including “pre-impact” and “post-impact” daily flow data frequently unavailable. The hydrological modeling is commonly used to face data missing problems or reconstruct natural conditions, even if models, especially at the daily scales, are often complex and computationally intensive. The use of si…

Trans-boundary land cover changes and its influences on water crisis: Case study of the Aras River

2020

Abstract In a watershed, disturbing land covers (LCs) are one of the most important factors in the balance and flow rate of water. This study aimed to monitor and model LC changes in the upstream of the Aras River Basin in Turkey over 1984, 2002, 2010 and 2016. The main ground to conduct such an analysis was to mitigate severe economic, social and ecological consequences driven by agricultural activities and dam construction along with probable climate change, which would decrease the water flow from the Aras River to Caspian Sea. The study approach consisted of four main steps: 1) producing LC maps using Landsat satellite images, 2) performing the change analysis, 3) identifying the change…

Analysis of Meatal Location in 500 Men

1995

AbstractThe high incidence (70 percent) of anterior hypospadias, mostly without penile curvature, in our pediatric hypospadias patients led us to study the meatal location in normal men to investigate if meatal advancement in all patients with anterior hypospadias can be justified when the wide variation of meatal locations in normal men is considered. The location of the external meatus was analyzed in 500 men (mean age 57 years) with classification of the meatal position in relation to the tip of the glans and corona. Quality of erections and sexual intercourse, presence or absence of penile curvature, urinary stream and ability to void in a standing position were assessed in an interview…

INVESTIGATING MARKET POTENTIAL FOR STREAMING SUBSCRIPTION MODEL IN EMERGING ECONOMIES : A CASE OF NIGERIA

2018

Master's thesis Music management MU501 - University of Agder 2018 Building on two marketing theories: the product and marketing concept, this study conceptualizes how music sampling, consumers’ income and attitude affect streaming subscription in Nigeria. The aim is to test whether efficient market for streaming subscription could be developed in emerging economies and contribute to growth in the world digital music markets. The study used a binomial logistic regression to analyse 230 observations obtained from a survey data to estimate a conceptual framework. Results show that music sampling positively affect streaming subscription. Conversely, consumers’ income and attitude are both not s…

Introducing a strategic perspective in lean thinking applications through system dynamics modelling: the dynamic Value Stream Map

2020

PurposeLean Thinking is an operation management discipline which aims to identify, map and analyse the activities forming a process to detect “value waste” and outline the most effective flow of activities to execute in sequence. Process mapping is often developed in lean projects through the use of the Value Stream Map (VSM). Like many other management tools, the VSM adopts a static and non-systemic perspective in the representation of an organizational process. This may result in the implementation of Lean projects inconsistent with the overall organizational long-term strategy, thus leading to dysfunctional performance. In order to overcome this limit, the paper suggests combining VSM wi…

Development and validation of the Perceived Investment Value (PIV) scale

2013

This study aims to develop a complementary and more comprehensive measurement to assess the nature of investment value affecting consumers’ investment behavior. Recent research suggests that consumers may desire and obtain certain outcomes from investments that have not been anticipated in mainstream finance and economics literature. These benefits might be hedonistic or altruistic, self-expressive or emotional and experiential. Yet, while an increasing amount of attention has been paid to this topic, little effort has been made to develop an appropriate measurement scale for the subjective consumer perceptions of investments. To address this gap in the literature, this study introduces the…

Joint Alignment and Modeling of Correlated Behavior Streams

2013

The Variable Time-Shift Hidden Markov Model (VTS- HMM) is proposed for learning and modeling pairs of cor- related streams. Unlike previous coupled models for time series, the VTS-HMM accounts for varying time shifts be- tween correlated events in pairs of streams having different properties. The VTS-HMM is learned on a set of pairs of unaligned streams and, thus, learning entails simultaneous estimation of the varying time shifts and of the parameters of the model. The formulation is demonstrated in the analysis of videos of dyadic social interactions between children and adults in the Multimodal Dyadic Behavior Dataset (MMDB). In dyadic social interactions, an agent starts an interaction …

Video Streaming Distribution in VANETs

2011

Streaming applications will rapidly develop and contribute a significant amount of traffic in the near future. A problem, scarcely addressed so far, is how to distribute video streaming traffic from one source to all nodes in an urban vehicular network. This problem significantly differs from previous work on broadcast and multicast in ad hoc networks because of the highly dynamic topology of vehicular networks and the strict delay requirements of streaming applications. We present a solution for intervehicular communications, called Streaming Urban Video (SUV), that 1) is fully distributed and dynamically adapts to topology changes, and 2) leverages the characteristics of streaming applica…

RESEARCH-BASED REFLECTIONS ABOUT CHARACTER EDUCATION: MYTHS, CHALLENGES AND INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES

2018

At present, youngsters’ character and virtue education issues are widely discussed in Latvia and in English-speaking academic environment. Given the existing criticism of these concepts, the research question was: what are the main misunderstandings about the nature of character and virtue education? After clarifying the neo-Aristotelian understanding of these concepts, recent research in the field of character education and virtues is presented for deconstructing some of the myths related to it, due to conceptual, historical, moral and political misunderstandings (Kristjánsson, 2013). Real problems (historical, methodological and practical) faced by character education programs in mainstre…
