Quantitative ultrasonography of muscle: Detection of adaptations to training in elderly women

Abstract Objective: To develop quantitative ultrasonography in studying the adaptation of quadriceps muscle mass and composition to short-term physical training and rehabilitation in elderly women. Design: Randomized control trial. Setting: Measurements in a research laboratory and training in a fitness center and sports hall. Participants: Forty-two women, aged 76 to 78 years, with no indications against intensive physical exercise, randomly assigned to strength ( n = 16), endurance ( n = 15), and control ( n = 11) groups. Technique and safety aspects of resistance exercises: a systematic review of the literature.

A systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted to identify the optimal ranges of motion for preventing injury in the main joints of the body during resistance exercise performance. These ranges of motion are independent of the type in which the resistance exercises could be applied (ie, adults, elderly, athletes, recreational exercisers), and the regions examined include the shoulder, spine, and knee, which are injured most often. It can be concluded that during the performance of any resistance exercise, it is possible to put anatomical structures at risk with certain body positions; therefore, it is necessary to understand these movements so injury can be avoided.

Effects of prolonged and maintenance strength training on force production, walking, and balance in aging women and men

To examine effects of 21-week twice/week strength training (ST) period followed by an additional 21-week twice or once/week ST period on force production, walking and balance in aging people. Seventy-two women (58 ± 7 years; W) and 63 (58 ± 6 years) men (M) were randomized for the first 21-week ST period: STW and STM, control (C) CW and CM. Effect of training level and blood flow restriction on thermal parameters: Preliminary study

Abstract Training with blood flow restriction could lead to an effect on skin temperature. Additionally, this effect could be higher in people with lower physical fitness level due to their lower capacity of heat loss. The aim of this preliminary study was therefore to evaluate the effects of training experience on the acute and chronic thermal skin responses after performing exercise with and without blood flow restriction. Strength and power changes of the human plantar flexors and knee extensors in response to resistance training in old age

Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess and compare the improvements of muscle strength and power induced by a 16-week resistive programme in a population of 16 older men aged 65-81 years. Strength training and neuromuscular function in elderly people with total knee endoprosthesis

The effects of 1 year of intensive strength training on neuromuscular function were studied in elderly people operated for total endoprosthesis (n=30) divided into 3 groups: training pup 1 (TG1, n=11), training pup 2 (TG2, n=10) and control group (CG, n=9). After the operation, TG1 and TG2 trained every second day and the training was controlled by training diaries, and CG performed only conventional exercises by themselves. The overall volume of training in TG2 was 30% greater than in TG1. A physically demanding occupation predicts premature retirement among patients with erosive arthritis

The aim of this study was to assess the intensity of exercise and energy expenditure of patients with recent onset inflammatory arthritis in their occupational environments and leisure time physical activities.
