Stress/strain effects on electrochemical activity: Metallurgical/mechanical/interactions and surface reactivity
2021
Abstract Tribocorrosion is of complex nature as it involves multiscale interactions between mechanical, (electro-)chemical, physical, and material factors. The influence of mechanical stresses/strains on the surface reactivity of metallic alloys is described here. The electrochemical behavior and the corrosion resistance of engineering alloys are discussed in the presence of compressive and tensile stresses through different examples. The role of physical (formation of steps, roughness, microcracks), metallurgical (dislocations, crystallographic texture, and grain size), and chemical (passive film composition) changes induced by plastic deformation on electrochemical behavior and corrosion …
General stress-strain model for concrete or masonry response under uniaxial cyclic compression
2002
The paper proposes analytical forms able to represent with very good approximation the constitutive law experimentally deducible by means of uniaxial cyclic compressive tests on material having softening post-peak behaviour in compression and negligible tensile strength. The envelope, unloading and reloading curves characterizing the proposed model adequately approach structural responses corresponding to different levels of nonlinearity and ductility, requiring a not very high number of parameters to be calibrated experimentally. The reliability of the model is shown by comparing the results that it is able to provide with the ones analytically deduced from two reference models (one for co…
Criteria of multiaxial random fatigue based on stress, strain and energy parameters of damage in the critical plane
2005
In this paper generalized criteria of multiaxial random fatigue based on stress, strain and strain energy density parameters in the critical plane have been discussed. The proposed criteria reduce multiaxial state of stress to the equivalent uniaxial tension–compression or alternating bending. Relations between the coefficients occurring in the considered criteria have been derived. Thus, it is possible to take into account fatigue properties of materials under simple loading states during determination of the multiaxial fatigue life. Presented models have successfully correlated fatigue lives of cast iron GGG40 and steel 18G2A specimens under constant amplitude in-phase and out-of-phase lo…
Boundary element modeling and analysis of adhesive bonded structural joints
2007
In this paper, a boundary element technique for modeling and analysis of adhesive bonded structural joints is presented. The formulation is developed in the framework of the anisotropic elasticity and attention is focused on the application to composite structural joints built with the splicing concept technique. To model and analyze composite bonded joints a multidomain implementation of the boundary element method has been used. It has been proven well suited and very effective for the characterization of the mechanical behavior of spliced joints, allowing the analysis of the high gradient stress and strain fields near the splice lines as well as the prediction of the overall distribution…
Behaviour in compression of lightweight fiber reinforced concrete confined with transverse steel reinforcement
2004
Abstract The compressive behavior of lightweight fiber reinforced concrete confined with transverse reinforcement consisting of steel stirrups or spirals was analyzed. Pumice stone and expanded clay aggregates were utilized to decrease the weight of the composite; hooked steel fibers were also added. The investigation was carried out by testing cylindrical and prismatic specimens of different sizes in compression using an open-loop displacement control machine, recording the full load–deformation curves. The influence of the dimensions and shape on the bearing capacity and on the ductility of the specimens confined with transverse steel reinforcements was analyzed. The results show the poss…
A Digital Control System for the Hydraulic Fatigue Stand SHM 250b
2006
Unreliable and inflexible analog control systems of fatigue test stands applied in laboratories are being replaced by systems enabling easy development and implementation of new test ideas. This paper presents a digital control system applied in the fatigue test stand SHM 250b. It is based on a new electronic system and the I/O board RT-DAQ4/PCI with the software Matlab/Simulink used for communication with the board. The control system for the fatigue test stand SHM 250b gives the possibility of performing fatigue tests under controlled strain ε(t), stress σ(t) and energy parameter W(t) which is calculated from the stress and strain signals. The applied control system is now used, depending…
Experimental investigation on compressive behavior of bottle-shaped struts
2011
The goal of this investigation was the experimental verification of the dispersion of compression in bottle-shaped struts. Two typical bottle shapes were generated under load in compression concrete—both drilled and undrilled—and were reinforced concrete prismatic members with loading steel plate having a reduced area with respect to the entire cross section of the members. Axial load, and axial and lateral strains were recorded during the tests to evaluate the effects of key parameters. The comparative analysis of the experimental results showed that: 1) the presence of a hole produces a variation on the stress and strain distribution and a reduction in the load-carrying capacity; 2) the r…
On the Path and Area Jx1-Integral Components and their Relationship to the Out-of-Plane Constraint in Elastic Cracked Plates
2009
In this paper, the path and area components of the Jx1-integral, JP and JA, in three dimensional elastic cracked plates under mode-I loading are investigated aiming at relating them to the out-of-plane constraint conditions resulting from different specimen thicknesses. It is concluded that the JP and JA components of the Jx1-integral vary in the region where the out-of-plane constraint extends. Sufficiently far from the crack front, these integrals tend to stabilize, indicating that the thickness constraint vanishes and that a 2D-like stress and strain fields have been reached. A pure plane strain condition is only attained when the specimen thickness is very large when compared to the in-…
A lumped model for a seismic source
1993
A lumped mechanical model is proposed and solved. This model is dynamically equivalent, in the mean field approximation, to a faulted lithosphere. The transition from the continuous system (modelled according to W. H. Prescott and A. Nur) to the lumped one, has been made by preserving all the relevant features exhibited by the continuous system. In particular the coupling between different components of the stress and strain tensors is suitably taken into account. The dynamics of the lumped system depends on six control parameters fixed by the physical properties of the continuous system. Three of the control parameters are dimensionless and describe: the seismic wave quality factor of the…
Determination of strain and stress distribution on shearwalls by using the speckle photography technique
2003
Abstract Speckle photography (SP) is a powerful tool that is adequate to determine small displacements in micrometer range. This information shows other characteristics of structure deformation under loads and can be determined as stress and strain distribution. In this paper we present the results of the application of the SP technique used to study the behaviour of discontinuities in a shearwall model. These structural elements are very important to the stability of buildings. The displacement whole field around the discontinuities and loading points was determined using the pointwise method. This allows us to determine stress distribution at the point of interest by means of the suitable…
