THE SPACE OF STRING CONFIGURATIONS IN STRING FIELD THEORY

1990

In this paper we consider the set of maps from the interval [0, π] which constitute the argument of the functionals of a String Field Theory. We show that in order to correctly reproduce results of the dual model one has to include all square integrable functions in the functional integral, or Ω0 in terms of Sobolev spaces.

Computation of Amplitudes in the Discretized Approach to String Field Theory

1988

An approach to Witten string field theory based on the discretization of the world sheet is adopted. We use it to calculate tree amplitudes with the formulation of the theory based on string functionals. The results are evaluated numerically and turn out to be very accurate, giving, for a string approximated by 600 points, values within 0.02% of the prediction of the dual model. The method opens a way to calculate amplitudes in string field theory using nonflat backgrounds as well as compactified dimensions.

Neutral heavy lepton signatures at the Z0 peak

1990

Abstract Gauge singlet Neutral Heavy Leptons (NHL) arise in many extensions of the standard electroweak theory such as superstring inspired models and their existence may be related to the observed smallness of the neutrino masses. Existing limits on such particles are still fairly poor. A brief discussion is given of the signatures arising from their production through Z 0 → N + ν or Z 0 → N + ν and their subsequent decays within different models. Taking into account the expected luminosities and typical detector efficiencies of the different LEP/SLC experiments one concludes that these may either discover isosinglets or else substantially improve and extend present limits on their mass an…

Flavour-violating charged lepton decays in seesaw-type models

1994

Analytic expressions of lepton-flavour- and lepton-number-violating decays of charged leptons are derived in the context of general $SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y$ seesaw scenarios that are motivated by grand unified theories (GUT's) or superstring models, in which left-handed and/or right-handed neutral singlets are present. Possible constraints imposed by cosmology and low-energy data are briefly discussed. The violation of the decoupling theorem in flavour-dependent graphs due to the presence of heavy neutral leptons of Dirac or Majorana nature is emphasized. Numerical estimates reveal that the decays $\tau^-\to e^-e^-e^+$ or $\tau^-\to e^-\mu^-\mu^+$ can be as large as $\sim 10^{-6}$, which may…

Is the spectrum of highly excited mesons purely coulombian?

2008

We show that a static central potential may provide a precise description of highly excited light unflavoured mesons. Due to string breaking this potential becomes of chromoelectric type at sufficiently large quark-antiquark distances giving rise to a coulombian spectrum. The same conclusion can be inferred for any other meson sector through a straightforward extension of our analysis.

Holomorphic Aspects of String Theory

1989

A string is a piecewise smooth map of the interval to a manifold M. A closed string is a map of the circle S1 into M. In string theory the strings replace the points of the manifold M as fundamental objects. The enormous amount of work done on quantized string models in physics has been motivated by the hope that the quantum string theory would produce a finite quantized theory of gravity, free of the divergences of the ordinary quantized Einstein theory of gravitation. So far the proof is missing but work is continuing. It has been proposed that some kind of string theory would be the unified theory of all fundamental interactions in physics. However, the fundamental principles of string t…

Canonical equivalence of a generic 2-D dilaton gravity model and a free field

1997

We show that a canonical transformation converts, up to a boundary term, a generic 2-D dilaton gravity model into a free field theory with a Minkowskian target space.

NON-PERTURBATIVE VACUUM WAVE-FUNCTIONAL AND CLOSED STRING EQUATIONS OF MOTION

1989

The anomalous conformal dependence of the vacuum wave-functional is studied in the non-perturbative regime of the closed bosonic string theory. It is shown that the vanishing of the vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor trace leads to the implementation of a suitable variational condition on the wave-functional, provided that the dilaton condensate be taken as a conformal compensator for the graviton condensate of the embedding space.
