AX-PET: Concept, proof of principle and first results with phantoms

AX-PET is a novel PET concept based on long crystals axially arranged and orthogonal Wavelength shifter (WLS) strips, both individually readout by Geiger-mode Avalanche Photo Diodes (G-APD). Its design was conceived in order to reduce the parallax error and simultaneously improve spatial resolution and sensitivity. The assessment of the AX-PET concept and potential was carried out through a set of measurements comprising individual module characterizations and scans in coincidence mode of point-like and extended sources. Rigorous Multimode Equivalent Network Representation of Multilayer Planar Circuits

The objective of this paper is to extend the use of the Multimode Equivalent Network formulation, originally developed to analyze waveguide junctions, to the analysis of planar circuits that include arbitrary rectangular printed, zero thickness metallizations together with internal and external ports in the transverse plane. The theoretical derivations lead to an accurate and computationally efficient tool for the analysis of boxed, multilayer microwave printed circuits. Pb(II) adsorption by a novel activated carbon - alginate composite material. A kinetic and equilibrium study.

The adsorption capacity of an activated carbon – calcium alginate composite material (ACAA-Ca) has been tested with the aim of developing a new and more efficient adsorbent material to remove Pb(II) ion from aqueous solution. The study was carried out at pH = 5, in NaCl medium and in the ionic strength range 0.1–0.75 mol L−1. Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (DP-ASV) technique was used to check the amount of Pb(II) ion removed during kinetic and equilibrium experiments. Automatic skull stripping in MRI based on morphological filters and fuzzy c-means segmentation

In this paper a new automatic skull stripping method for T1-weighted MR image of human brain is presented. Skull stripping is a process that allows to separate the brain from the rest of tissues. The proposed method is based on a 2D brain extraction making use of fuzzy c-means segmentation and morphological operators applied on transversal slices. The approach is extended to the 3D case, taking into account the result obtained from the preceding slice to solve the organ splitting problem. The proposed approach is compared with BET (Brain Extraction Tool) implemented in MRIcro software.

Humidity Sensing by Polymer-Loaded UHF RFID Antennas

Passive ultra high-frequency radio frequency identification tags, besides item labeling, are also able to exploit capability to sense the physical state of the tagged object as well as of the surrounding environment. Here, a new family of polymer-doped tags are proposed and fully characterized for the detection of ambient humidity. A sensitive chemical species based on PEDOT:PSS is used to load a shaped slot, carved into a folded-like patch tag. In this article, we present a theoretical microscopic approach to describe the magnetic and spectroscopic behavior of multifunctional hybrid materials which demonstrate spin crossover and ferromagnetic ordering. The low-spin to high-spin transition is considered as a cooperative phenomenon that is driven by the interaction of the electronic shells of the Fe ions with the full symmetric deformation of the local surrounding that is extended over the crystal lattice via the acoustic phonon field. The proposed model is applied to the analysis of the series [Fe(III)(sal2-trien)] [Mn(II)Cr(III)(ox)3]·solv, in short 1·solv, where solv = CH2Cl2, CH2Br2, and CHBr3.
