Sclerochronology - a highly versatile tool for mariculture and reconstruction of life history traits of the queen conch, Strombus gigas (Gastropoda)

2009

International audience; The queen conch, Strombus gigas, is an important fisheries resource in the Western Tropical Atlantic. In order to maintain harvesting success, improve fisheries management and contribute to mariculture pursuits, a detailed understanding of the life history traits of this species is required. Traditionally, this has been achieved by tedious and time-consuming long-term field observations. This study presents a highly versatile and rapid technique to estimate the timing and rate of shell growth based on sclerochronology. The Belizean S. gigas specimens (N = 2) from the offshore atoll, Glovers Reef, reached their final shell size (maximum shell height: 22.7 and 23.5 cm,…

The shell organic matrix of the crossed lamellar queen conch shell (Strombus gigas)

2014

10 pages; International audience; In molluscs, the shell organic matrix comprises a large set of biomineral-occluded proteins, glycoproteins and polysaccharides that are secreted by the calcifying mantle epithelium, and are supposed to display several functions related to the synthesis of the shell. In the present paper, we have characterized biochemically the shell matrix associated to the crossed-lamellar structure of the giant queen conch Strombus gigas. The acid-soluble (ASM) and acid-insoluble (AIM) matrices represent an extremely minor fraction of the shell. Both are constituted of polydisperse and of few discrete proteins among which three fractions, obtained by preparative SDS-PAGE …

Komunitas Gastropoda pada Padang Lamun Perairan Pantai Manokwari

2021

Elevation of the last interglacial highstand in Sicily (Italy): A benchmark of coastal tectonics

2006

Well-preserved MIS 5.5 terraces in Sicily are identified primarily by the index fossil Strombus bubonius, and dated by amino acid racemization (AAR), electron spin resonance (ESR), Uranium/Thorium (U/Th) and thermo luminescence (TL) methods. This review of published data and new results for the island of Sicily and neighbouring small islands of Egadi, Ustica and Lampedusa identifies areas of rapid uplift in the east (up to +175 m, elevation above sea level), slower uplift in the north (+29 m), and relative stability in the northwest (+2/+18 m). In contrast, about 250 km of the southern coastline of Sicily does not appear to contain MIS 5.5 outcrops. In eastern Sicily, correlation of MIS 5.5…
