Odderon Exchange from Elastic Scattering Differences between pp and pp¯ Data at 1.96 TeV and from pp Forward Scattering Measurements

2021

We describe an analysis comparing the p p ¯ elastic cross section as measured by the D0 Collaboration at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV to that in p p collisions as measured by the TOTEM Collaboration at 2.76, 7, 8, and 13 TeV using a model-independent approach. The TOTEM cross sections, extrapolated to a center-of-mass energy of s = 1.96 TeV , are compared with the D0 measurement in the region of the diffractive minimum and the second maximum of the p p cross section. The two data sets disagree at the 3.4 σ level and thus provide evidence for the t -channel exchange of a colorless, C -odd gluonic compound, also known as the odderon. We combine these results with a TOTEM analysis of th…

Precision physics with inclusive QCD processes

2021

The inclusive production of hadrons through electroweak currents can be rigorously analysed with short-distance theoretical tools. The associated observables are insensitive to the involved infrared behaviour of the strong interaction, allowing for very precise tests of Quantum Chromodynamics. The theoretical predictions for $\sigma(e^+e^-\to\mathrm{hadrons})$ and the hadronic decay widths of the $\tau$ lepton and the $Z$, $W$ and Higgs bosons have reached an impressive accuracy of $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^4)$. Precise experimental measurements of the $Z$ and $\tau$ hadronic widths have made possible the accurate determination of the strong coupling at two very different energy scales, providi…

Scalar glueball spectrum

2006

I discuss scenarios for scalar glueballs using arguments based on sum rules, spectral decomposition, the $\frac{1}{{N}_{c}}$ approximation, the scales of the strong interaction and the topology of the flux tubes. I analyze the phenomenological support of those scenarios and their observational implications. My investigations hint a rich low lying glueball spectrum.

Collective dynamics in relativistic nuclear collisions

2014

Abstract I will review the current status of describing spacetime evolution of the relativistic nuclear collisions with fluid dynamics, and of determining the transport coefficients of strongly interacting matter. The fluid dynamical models suggest that shear viscosity to entropy density ratio of the matter is small. However, there are still considerable challenges in determining the transport coefficients, and especially their temperature dependence is still poorly constrained.

Accelerating Ab Initio Nucleon Structure Calculations with All-Mode-Averaging on Gordon

2014

The composition of nucleons has long been known to be sub-atomic particles called quarks and gluons, which interact through the strong force and theoretically can be described by Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Lattice QCD (LQCD), in which the continuous space-time is translated into grid points on a four-dimensional lattice and ab initio Monte Carlo simulations are performed, is by far the only model-independent method to study QCD with controllable errors. We report the successful application of a novel algorithm, All-Mode-Averaging, in the LQCD calculations of nucleon internal structure on the Gordon supercomputer our award of roughly 6 million service units through XSEDE. The application …

Hadronic Contributions to the Anomalous Magnetic Moment of the Muon from Lattice QCD

2021

The Standard Model of Particle Physics describes three of the four known fundamental interactions: the strong interaction between quarks and gluons, the electromagnetic interaction, and the weak interaction. While the Standard Model is extremely successful, we know that it is not a complete description of nature. One way to search for physics beyond the Standard Model lies in the measurement of precision observables. The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon \(a_\mu \equiv \frac{1}{2}(g-2)_\mu \), quantifying the deviation of the gyromagnetic ratio from the exact value of 2 predicted by the Dirac equation, is one such precision observable. It exhibits a persistent discrepancy of 3.5 standar…

Natural constraints on the gluon-quark vertex

2016

In principle, the strong-interaction sector of the Standard Model is characterised by a unique renormalisation-group-invariant (RGI) running interaction and a unique form for the dressed--gluon-quark vertex, $\Gamma_\mu$; but, whilst much has been learnt about the former, the latter is still obscure. In order to improve this situation, we use a RGI running-interaction that reconciles both top-down and bottom-up analyses of the gauge sector in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to compute dressed-quark gap equation solutions with 1,660,000 distinct Ansaetze for $\Gamma_\mu$. Each one of the solutions is then tested for compatibility with three physical criteria and, remarkably, we find that merely…

Hadron structure at lowQ2

2007

This review deals with the structure of hadrons, strongly interacting many-body systems consisting of quarks and gluons. These systems have a size of about 1 fm, which shows up in scattering experiments at low momentum transfers $Q$ in the GeV region. At this scale the running coupling constant of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the established theory of the strong interactions, becomes divergent. It is therefore highly intriguing to explore this theory in the realm of its strong interaction regime. However, the quarks and gluons can not be resolved at the GeV scale but have to be studied through their manifestations in the bound many-body systems, for instance pions, nucleons and their reson…
