Lay-up optimization for the hull of a racing sailing yacht

Abstract Deformability and buckling load of yacht hulls with fiber reinforced plastic sandwich structure depend on the stack sequence of the skins. In this work an optimization of fiber directions of the laminae for a racing yacht is proposed. This procedure has been divided into three parts (i.e. material characterization, surface model definition, lay-up optimization). RC column externally strengthened with RC jackets

In this paper the behaviour in compression of RC columns externally strengthened with concrete jacketing is analysed and a cross-section analysis of the jacketed member under axial load and bending moment is developed. The focus was to study the effect of confinement of concrete jacket on concrete core and the behaviour of compressed bars with buckling effects. Compressive behaviour of concrete elliptical columns confined by single hoops

The compressive behaviour of short concrete members having elliptical cross-sections and confined with single steel hoops is investigated. An analytical model is given for calculation of the stress-strain curves of compressed members also including the valuation of the ultimate stress corresponding to formation of a complete failure plane in the concrete core. Tramway Track: A New Approach for Measuring the Transverse Profile of Worn-Out Rails

Abstract Monitoring the wear condition of the tramway superstructure is one of the key points to guarantee an adequate safety level of the light rail transport system. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a new non-conventionalprocedure for measuring the transverse profile of rails in operation by means of image-processing technique. This methodological approach is based on the “information” contained in high-resolution photographic images of tracks and on specific algorithms which allow to obtain the exact geometric profile of the rails and therefore to measure the state of the rail-head extrados wear.

Abstract Belt drives work often with short center distances and very different wrap arcs so that high adherence characteristics are required at the belt-pulley contact. In addition, the belt flexural stiffness reduces the contact width, but this decrease may be compensated in part by the belt softening due to the shear compliance.

The mechanics of continuous chip formation in oblique cutting with single-edged tool—part II. Experimental verification of the theory

Abstract Experimental results obtained during oblique cutting of annealed steel Ck 45 (SAE-AISI 1045) with a single-edged tool are presented. Extensive measurements of forces, cutting ratio, chip flow angle etc. have been carried out under a wide range of cutting conditions. The measured data obtained from these cutting tests are used to test assumptions proposed in the first part of this work. In relation to previous works dealing with oblique cutting problems the present one extends to tools with angles of tool obliquity ranging from 30° to 70° and having a large negative rake angle.

A measurement methodology for monitoring a CHCP pilot plant for an office building

Abstract In Mediterranean areas, climate conditions determine quite equal demand both for thermal and cooling energy. The possibility to convert a cooling demand in thermal one through an absorption chiller allows to extend widely the number of running hours of a cogeneration plant. A trigeneration pilot plant for two office building is described, in which an integrated lay-out includes a NG prime mover with heat exchanger, an absorption chiller and a reversible heat pump.
