Dynamic Finite Element analysis of fractionally damped structural systems in the time domain
2015
Visco-elastic material models with fractional characteristics have been used for several decades. This paper provides a simple methodology for Finite-Element-based dynamic analysis of structural systems with viscosity characterized by fractional derivatives of the strains. In particular, a re-formulation of the well-known Newmark method taking into account fractional derivatives discretized via the Grunwald–Letnikov summation allows the analysis of structural systems using standard Finite Element technology.
Performance-Based Engineering of Wind-Excited Structures: A General Methodology
2016
The current prescriptive design philosophy that relies simply on meeting requirements stipulated in standards is shifting towards a performance-based design (PBD) approach for achieving designs that rationally meet society’s need for a truly safe built environment. Extensive research has facilitated the successful adoption of PBD in earthquake engineering, but the same cannot be said for wind engineering. Therefore, the need exists to initiate a similar effort by defining a framework that fully embraces the concepts of PBD during the design of building systems to resist severe wind events. This paper illustrates the development of such a PBD framework. In particular, a method is proposed sp…
In-depth structural analysis of lanthanoid coordination networks based on a flexible tripodal zwitterionic isonicotinate ligand
2019
Crystallizing metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has been studied using a tripodal pyridinecarboxylic acid derivative ligand and selected lanthanoid salts. The zwitterionic ligand, 1,1′,1′′-((2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-triyl)tris(methylene))tris(pyridin-1-ium-4-carboxylate) (TTTPC) introduced as a bromide salt, forms coordination networks in aqueous environments and under ambient conditions with neodymium bromide, trifluoromethanesulfonate (OTf) or acetate (OAc). Seven structures are elucidated in detail using single crystal X-ray crystallography. TTTPC NdBr3, TTTPC NdBr2OTf, TTTPC NdBr(OTf)2 and TTTPC Nd(OTf)3 are porous 3D networks with similar ligand–metal and ligand–anion interactions, b…
Multiscale microstructural characterization of particulate-reinforced composite with non-destructive X-ray micro- and nanotomography
2018
Abstract Methods based on X-ray tomography are developed to study the relevant statistical quantities describing the microstructural inhomogeneity of particulate reinforced composites. The developed methods are applied in estimating microstructural inhomogeneity parameters of composites containing metallic glass particles in metal matrix, extruded in varying pressure loads. This study indicates that the critical characteristics with regard to the effect of particle clustering are cluster size and shape, local volume fraction of particles in the cluster and the distance between clusters. The results demonstrate that the spatial distribution of reinforcement is very uneven and the amount of p…
Biosilicification of loricate choanoflagellate: organic composition of the nanotubular siliceous costal strips of Stephanoeca diplocostata.
2010
SUMMARY Loricate choanoflagellates (unicellular, eukaryotic flagellates; phylum Choanozoa) synthesize a basket-like siliceous lorica reinforced by costal strips (diameter of approximately 100 nm and length of 3 μm). In the present study, the composition of these siliceous costal strips is described, using Stephanoeca diplocostata as a model. Analyses by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), coupled with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), indicate that the costal strips comprise inorganic and organic components. The organic, proteinaceous scaffold contained one major polypeptide of mass 14 kDa that reacted with wheat germ agglutinin. Polyclonal antibodies were raised that allowed …
A computational procedure for the investigation of whipping effect on ITER High Energy Piping and its application to the ITER divertor primary heat t…
2015
Abstract The Tokamak Cooling Water System of nuclear facility has the function to remove heat from plasma facing components maintaining coolant temperatures, pressures and flow rates as required and, depending on thermal-hydraulic requirements, its systems are defined as High Energy Piping (HEP) because they contain fluids, such as water or steam, at a pressure greater than or equal to 2.0 MPa and/or at a temperature greater than or equal to 100 °C, or even gas at pressure above the atmospheric one. The French standards contemplate the need to consider the whipping effect on HEP design. This effect happens when, after a double ended guillotine break, the reaction force could create a displa…
Further improvements in the structural analysis of DEMO Divertor Cassette body and design assessment according to RCC-MRx
2019
Abstract This paper presents the enhancements related to the structural analyses of DEMO Divertor in the framework of the EUROfusion Power Plant Physics & Technology (PPPT) program. This activity started two years ago and its preliminary results were published in previous papers. It has been divided in some areas defined by the similarity of the matters they contain: the structural analysis, of utmost importance, has been preceded by a preliminary phase, like the geometry definition or the thermal and the electric-magnetic analysis for loads evaluation; then the structural analysis has been finally confirmed with further evaluations related to excessive deformation or plastic instability. T…
The drawings of the telamones, the giant statues placed the front of the Temple of Zeus in the archaeological area of Agrigento, have fascinated some of the most famous neoclassical architects in Europe. The virtual reconstruction of one intercolumnial of the Temple, based both on the range-based survey of…
Microstructural manipulation of electrospun scaffolds for specific bending stiffness for heart valve tissue engineering
2012
Biodegradable thermoplastic elastomers are attractive for application in cardiovascular tissue construct development due to their amenability to a wide range of physical property tuning. For heart valve leaflets, while low flexural stiffness is a key design feature, control of this parameter has been largely neglected in the scaffold literature where electrospinning is being utilized. This study evaluated the effect of processing variables and secondary fiber populations on the microstructure, tensile and bending mechanics of electrospun biodegradable polyurethane scaffolds for heart valve tissue engineering. Scaffolds were fabricated from poly(ester urethane) urea (PEUU) and the deposition…
Landscape structure, resilience and ecogeographic relations between agro-forestry and forestry landscapes of Sicily: quantitative approaches
2014
Landscape ecology provides a wide spectrum of useful techniques for quantitative analysis of the land-mosaic patterns, on the basis of areal, linear and punctual parameters. According to the scale of analysis, data collection can be costly and time-consuming; this is especially true in areas with a very heterogeneous land-mosaic patterns and landscape-types for environmental variability and cultural reasons. Aims of this work are: 1) to assess the land-mosaic complexity of the traditional agricultural and agro-forestry landscapes (PAfT) of Sicily; 2) to highlight interfaces and structural gradients between main forest areas and closed PAfTs. These aims have the main purpose to pinpoint agri…
