Elastic-plastic fatigue crack growth in 18G2A steel under proportional bending with torsion loading

2006

The paper presents the results of fatigue crack growth on low-alloy 18G2A steel under proportional bending with torsion loading. Specimens with square sections and a stress concentration in the form of external one-sided sharp notch were used. The tests were performed under the stress ratios R = -1, -0.5 and 0. The test results were described by the ΔJ-integral range and compared with the ΔK stress intensity factor range. It has been found that there is a good agreement between the test results and the model of crack growth rate, which includes the ΔJ-integral range.

On the Field Variables Influence on Bonding Phenomena during FSW Processes: Experimental and Numerical Study

2013

Solid state bonding recurs in several manufacturing processes, as Friction Stir Welding (FSW), Linear Friction Welding (LFW), extrusion of hollow profiles and Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB). The former processes are nowadays of particular industrial interest because of the specific advantages with respect to the classic welding technologies. In FSW the solid state bonding is obtained between an undeformed cold material, already placed in the advancing side of the joint, and the hot material flow incoming from the retreating side. Proper conditions of pressure, temperature, strain and strain rate are needed in order to get the final effective bonding. In the paper experimental tests on butt…

Compressive behavior of short fibrous reinforced concrete members with square cross-section

2011

In the present paper a mechanical model to predict the compressive response of high strength short concrete columns with square cross-section confined by transverse steel is presented. The model allows one to estimate the equivalent confinement pressures exercised by transverse steel during the loading process taking into account of the interaction of the stirrups with the inner core both in the plane of the stirrups and in the space between two successive stirrups. The lateral pressure distributions at hoop levels are obtained by using a simple model of elastic beam on elastic medium simulating the interaction between stirrups and concrete core, including yielding of steel stirrups and dam…

Residual stresses in friction stir welded parts of complex geometry

2011

Residual stresses play a key role on the mechanics underlying the fatigue crack growth propagation of welded joints. Indeed, compressive residual stresses may induce a beneficial enhancement of the fatigue life under loading condition whereas tensile residual stresses may act to increase the stress distribution at crack tip, resulting in a life-threatening condition of the welded structure. In-process distortion and final geometry of welded joints are also affected by residual stresses. In this paper, the longitudinal residual stress distributions in friction stir welding (FSW) joints were investigated for butt and skin–stringer geometries, including lap and T configurations. To measure res…

The interphase finite element

2011

Mesomodelling of structures made of heterogeneous materials requires the introduction of mechanical models which are able to simulate the interactions between the adherents. Among these devices is quite popular the zero thickness interface (ZTI) model where the contact tractions and the displacement discontinuities are the primary static and kinematic variables. In some cases the joint response depends also on the internal stresses and strains within the thin layer adjacent to the joint interfaces. The interphase model, taking into account these additional variables, represents a sort of enhanced ZTI. In this paper a general theoretical formulation of the interphase model is reported and an…

Strength and ductility of R.C. columns strengthened with steel angles and battens

2012

Abstract In this paper the behaviour of R.C. members externally strengthened with steel angles and battens subjected to axial force and bending moment is analysed. A fibre model was utilised to predict the moment–curvature diagrams of the strengthened members on the basis of stress–strain curves of the constituent materials (confined concrete, steel bars and angles) recently derived by the author. The stress–strain curves utilised for compressed concrete were able to take into account the confinement effects induced by longitudinal (bars and steel angles) and transverse (stirrups and battens) steel reinforcements. Constitutive laws in compression for confined concrete and steel bars and ang…

Electroelastic Analysis of Piezoelectric Composite Laminates by Boundary Integral Equations

2004

A boundary integral representation for the electroelastic state in piezoelectric composite laminates subjected to axial extension, bending, torsion, shear/bending, and electric loadings is proposed. The governing equations are presented in terms of electromechanical generalized variables by the use of a suitable matrix notation. Thus, the three-dimensional electroelasticity solution for piezoelectric composite laminates is generated from a set of two partially coupled differential equations defined on the cross section of each individual ply within the laminate. These ply equations are linked through the interface conditions, which allow restoration of the model of the laminate as a whole. …

Critical Planes in Multiaxial Fatigue

2005

The paper includes a review of literature on the multiaxial fatigue failure criteria based on the critical plane concept. The criteria were divided into three groups according to the distinguished fatigue damage parameter used in the criterion, i.e. (i) stress, (ii) strain and (iii) strain energy density criteria. Each criterion was described mainly by the applied the critical plane position. The multiaxial fatigue criteria based on two critical planes seem to be the most promising. These two critical planes are determined by different fatigue damage mechanisms (shear and tensile mechanisms).

Criteria of multiaxial random fatigue based on stress, strain and energy parameters of damage in the critical plane

2005

In this paper generalized criteria of multiaxial random fatigue based on stress, strain and strain energy density parameters in the critical plane have been discussed. The proposed criteria reduce multiaxial state of stress to the equivalent uniaxial tension–compression or alternating bending. Relations between the coefficients occurring in the considered criteria have been derived. Thus, it is possible to take into account fatigue properties of materials under simple loading states during determination of the multiaxial fatigue life. Presented models have successfully correlated fatigue lives of cast iron GGG40 and steel 18G2A specimens under constant amplitude in-phase and out-of-phase lo…

A critical plane approach based on energy concepts: application to biaxial random tension-compression high-cycle fatigue regime

1999

Abstract In this paper the energy parameter, defined for random loadings, is analysed. Under uniaxial loading this parameter distinguishes between the strain energy density for tension (positive) and the strain energy density for compression (negative). As a consequence, if there is no mean component in the random loading, we obtain a random history of strain (elastic and plastic) energy density with zero expected value. Under multiaxial loadings the normal strain energy density in the critical plane (i.e. the plane of the maximum damage) is understood as the energy parameter. The history of strain energy density is schematized with use of the rain-flow algorithm. Fatigue damage is accumula…
