On the analysis of Catalan thin vaults

This paper is concerned with the identification, modelling and analysis of thin layered vaults, typical in the Catalan constructions of the XIX century. These special structures, also known as bovedas tabicadas, are characterized by very low thickness with respect to the medium surface dimensions and by the presence of different superimposed layers of bricks tied with mortar, are studied in order to individuate a coherent mechanical model for describing the material behaviour, to recognize the structural response utilizing as comparison adequate experimental results, and to extend the obtained results for the analysis of new vaults or for the restoration design of existing vaults. Algorithms for the calculation of the view factors between human body and rectangular surfaces in parallelepiped environments

Abstract The thermal comfort conditions for people in moderate thermal environments are subjected to spatial changes, depending on the radiative exchanges of the human body with the surrounding surfaces. Radiative thermal exchanges are notably accounted for by means of the “view factors” between a person in a given posture and the surface of the enclosure. These important parameters can be evaluated by means of a large set of graphs by Fanger, for rectangular surfaces. But the handling of graphs could lead to reading errors. Numerical-Experimental Study Regarding the Single Point Incremental Forming Process

The present paper proposes a numerical-experimental comparative study on the single point incremental forming process. A DC04 steel sheet with a thickness of 0.6 mm was used for both the numerical simulation using the finite element method and the experimental research. The type of trajectory used was a spiral trajectory and the finished part obtained was a truncated cone-shaped part. The analysis program used for simulation was Ls-Dyna. Deducing a Drain Spacing Formula by Applying Dimensional Analysis and Self-Similarity Theory

For designing a steady state drainage system a drain flow formula coupled with the Dupuit-Forcheimer form of the differential equation of groundwater flow is used. At first, in this paper the most applied drain flow formulas in steady-state conditions are reviewed and compared using as dependent variable the ratio between the maximum water table height and the distance between two lines of parallel drains. Failure Analysis of a Humeral Shaft Locking Compression Plate—Surface Investigation and Simulation by Finite Element Method

A case study of a failed humeral shaft locking compression plate is presented, starting with a clinical case where failure occurred and an implant replacement was required. This study uses finite element method (FEM) in order to determine the failure modes for the clinical case. Four loading scenarios that simulate daily life activities were considered for determining the stress distribution in a humeral shaft locking compression plate (LCP). Measuring Multiple Residual-Stress Components using the Contour Method and Multiple Cuts

The conventional contour method determines one component of residual stress over the cross section of a part. The part is cut into two, the contour (topographic shape) of the exposed surface is measured, and Bueckner’s superposition principle is analytically applied to calculate stresses. In this paper, the contour method is extended to the measurement of multiple residual-stress components by making multiple cuts with subsequent applications of superposition. Workhardening adaptation of rigid-plastic structures

The paper considers discrete rigid-plastic structures which are subjected to the action of loads varying quasi-statically within given limits. It studies the conditions for workhoardening adaptation, that is the conditions to ensure that the structure, after an initial rigid-plastic phase, shows a purely rigid behavior. The safety factor against the workhardening inadaptation is defined by two dual optimization problems. Some characteristic features of the yielding surface at failure are pointed out, using also a proper geometric description. Static and kinematic theorems, which are similar to those of shakedown theory, are given. A simple application concludes the paper.

Characterization of the Microshell Surface Using Holography

AbstractTo characterize the shape, the quality, and the roughness of microshells, digital holographic microscopy technology is used because it offers an appropriate ability to these studies. It captures holograms to reconstruct a double image, one for the intensity and another one for the phase. Using rotation axis, bump counting for the complete microshell surface is possible with a very high speed. Using image stitching and three-dimensional surface rebuilding software, mapping can be done in a few minutes. Each bump can then be characterized on the map by its position, diameter, and height.

Hollow system with fin. Transient Green function method combination for two hollow cylinders

In this paper we develop mathematical model for three dimensional heat equation for the system with hollow wall and fin and construct its analytical solution for two hollow cylindrical sample. The method of solution is based on Green function method for one hollow cylinder. On the conjugation conditions between both hollow cylinders we construct solution for system wall with fin. As result we come to integral equation on the surface between both hollow cylinders. Solution is obtained in the form of second kind Fredholm integral equation. The generalizing of Green function method allows us to use Green function method for regular non-canonical domains.
