Reliability-based design optimization of trusses under dynamic shakedown constraints

A reliability-based design optimization problem under dynamic shakedown constraints for elastic perfectly plastic truss structures subjected to stochastic wind actions is presented. The simultaneous presence of quasi-static (cyclic) thermal loads is also considered. As usual in the shakedown theory, the quasi-statical loads will be defined as variable within a deterministic domain, while the dynamic problem will be treated considering an extended Ceradini-Gavarini approach. A Study of Nash-Evolutionary Algorithms for Reconstruction Inverse Problems in Structural Engineering

In this paper we deal with solving inverse problems in structural engineering (both the reconstruction inverse problem and the fully stressed design problem are considered). We apply a game-theory based Nash-evolutionary algorithm and compare it with the standard panmictic evolutionary algorithm. The procedure performance is analyzed on a ten bar sized test case of discrete real cross-section types structural frame, where a significant increase of performance is achieved using the Nash approach, even achieving super-linear speed-up.

Application of GPS technology to measurements of displacements of high-rise structures due to weak winds

Abstract Global positioning systems (GPS) have been developed for military purposes like single-point positioning and navigation. The first non-military applications have been made for geodetic purposes with base-line measurements using differential methods. We introduce GPS technology as an alternative measurement method of displacements when high-rise structural systems are monitored. In this paper, two tests to evaluate the accuracy of the measurements using GPS are presented. Then the evaluation of ability of GPS to measure small movements of the Stuttgart TV-tower and the industrial chimney of Opole power station due to weak winds are also given.

Analysis of infilled frames using A coupled finite element and boundary element solution scheme

The behaviour of infilled frames subjected to horizontal loads is analysed by an iterative numerical procedure. The stiffness of the structural system is determined with variations in geometrical and mechanical characteristics. The analysis is carried out utilizing the boundary element method (BEM) for the infill and opportunely dividing the frame into finite elements, so as to transform the mutual interactions of the two subsystems into stresses distributed along the boundary for the infill and into nodal actions for the frame. Optimal design of tuned liquid column damper inerter for vibration control

Abstract In this paper, the use of a novel passive control device defined as Tuned Liquid Column Damper Inerter (TLCDI) is studied to control the seismic response of structural systems. The TLCDI, recently introduced as an enhanced version of the conventional Tuned Liquid Column Damper, may achieve improved seismic performances by exploiting the mass amplification effect of the so-called inerter device. 1. The action of iodoacetic acid (IA) was studied on the isolated rat diaphragm at 20–22° C. Membrane and action potentials were led off with intracellular microelectrodes. 2. IA causes a contracture which is complete in 4 hours. As long as t he contracture develops, the membrane potential remains constant. A contracture identical with that seen in a normal preparation can be produced by IA in the presence of isotonic K2SO4. 3. Minimum cause--maximum effect: the travelogue of a bullet.

This case report involves a 57-year-old male, accidentally shot in the chest with a small bore firearm. The bullet entered the left hemithorax, disrupting the left internal mammarian artery. It then penetrated the anterior wall of the right ventricle causing a pericardial tamponade. After leaving the base of the right heart it perforated the diaphragm, the liver, the spleen and the pancreas. Finally, it penetrated the abdominal aorta 3 cm proximally to the coeliac trunk and reached its final position paravertebrally. Effect of unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis on postpneumonectomy lung growth.

Respiratory muscle-associated stretch has been implicated in normal lung development (fetal breathing movements) and postpneumonectomy lung growth. To test the hypothesis that mechanical stretch from diaphragmatic contraction contributes to lung growth, we performed left phrenic nerve transections (PNT) in mice with and without ipsilateral pneumonectomy. PNT was demonstrated by asymmetric costal margin excursion and confirmed at autopsy. In mice with two lungs, PNT was associated with a decrease in ipsilateral lung volume ( P < 0.05) and lung weight ( P < 0.05).
