Dark matter-neutrino interactions through the lens of their cosmological implications

2018

Dark matter and neutrinos provide the two most compelling pieces of evidence for new physics beyond the Standard Model of Particle Physics but they are often treated as two different sectors. The aim of this paper is to determine whether there are viable particle physics frameworks in which dark matter can be coupled to active neutrinos. We use a simplified model approach to determine all possible renormalizable scenarios where there is such a coupling, and study their astrophysical and cosmological signatures. We find that dark matter-neutrino interactions have an impact on structure formation and lead to indirect detection signatures when the coupling between dark matter and neutrinos is …

Investigation of the orientation of galaxies in clusters: the importance, methods and results of research

2018

Various models of structure formation can account for various aspects of the galaxy formation process on different scales, as well as for various observational features of structures. Thus, the investigation of galaxies orientation constitute a standard test of galaxies formation scenarios since observed variations in angular momentum represent fundamental constraints for any model of galaxy formation. We have improved the method of analysis of the alignment of galaxies in clusters. Now, the method allowed analysis both position angles of galaxy major axes and two angles describing the spatial orientation of galaxies. The distributions of analyzed angles were tested for isotropy by applying…

Constraining dark matter late-time energy injection: decays and p-wave annihilations

2013

We use the latest cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations to provide updated constraints on the dark matter lifetime as well as on p-wave suppressed annihilation cross sections in the 1 MeV to 1 TeV mass range. In contrast to scenarios with an s-wave dominated annihilation cross section, which mainly affect the CMB close to the last scattering surface, signatures associated with these scenarios essentially appear at low redshifts ($z \lesssim 50$) when structure began to form, and thus manifest at lower multipoles in the CMB power spectrum. We use data from Planck, WMAP9, SPT and ACT, as well as Lyman-$\alpha$ measurements of the matter temperature at $z \sim 4$ to set a 95 % confide…

Improved cosmological bound on the thermal axion mass

2007

Relic thermal axions could play the role of an extra hot dark matter component in cosmological structure formation theories. By combining the most recent observational data we improve previous cosmological bounds on the axion mass m_a in the so-called hadronic axion window. We obtain a limit on the axion mass m_a < 0.42eV at the 95% c.l. (m_a < 0.72eV at the 99% c.l.). A novel aspect of the analysis presented here is the inclusion of massive neutrinos and how they may affect the bound on the axion mass. If neutrino masses belong to an inverted hierarchy scheme, for example, the above constraint is improved to m_a < 0.38eV at the 95% c.l. (m_a < 0.67eV at the 99% c.l.). Future da…

Structure formation during an early period of matter domination

2014

In this work we show that modifying the thermal history of the Universe by including an early period of matter domination can lead to the formation of astronomical objects. However, the survival of these objects can only be possible if the dominating matter decays to a daughter particle which is not only almost degenerate with the parent particle but also has an open annihilation channel. This requirement translates in an upper bound for the coupling of such a channel and makes the early structure formation viable.

Observational Constraints on Undulant Cosmologies

2005

In an undulant universe, cosmic expansion is characterized by alternating periods of acceleration and deceleration. We examine cosmologies in which the dark-energy equation of state varies periodically with the number of e-foldings of the scale factor of the universe, and use observations to constrain the frequency of oscillation. We find a tension between a forceful response to the cosmic coincidence problem and the standard treatment of structure formation.

Spinodal decomposition of polymer solutions: A parallelized molecular dynamics simulation

2008

In simulations of phase separation kinetics, large length and time scales are involved due to the mesoscopic size of the polymer coils, and the structure formation on still larger scales of length and time. We apply a coarse-grained model of hexadecane dissolved in supercritical carbon dioxide, for which in previous work the equilibrium phase behavior has been established by Monte Carlo methods. Using parallelized simulations on a multiprocessor supercomputer, large scale molecular dynamics simulations of phase separation following pressure jumps are presented for systems containing $N=435\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}136$ coarse-grained particles, which correspond to several millions of atoms…

Model-independent fit to Planck and BICEP2 data

2014

Inflation is the leading theory to describe elegantly the initial conditions that led to structure formation in our universe. In this paper, we present a novel phenomenological fit to the Planck, WMAP polarisation (WP) and the BICEP2 datasets using an alternative parameterisation. Instead of starting from inflationary potentials and computing the inflationary observables, we use a phenomenological parameterisation due to Mukhanov, describing inflation by an effective equation-of-state, in terms of the number of e-folds and two phenomenological parameters $\alpha$ and $\beta$. Within such a parametrisation, which captures the different inflationary models in a model-independent way, the valu…

Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies from second order gravitational perturbations

1997

This paper presents a complete analysis of the effects of second order gravitational perturbations on Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies, taking explicitly into account scalar, vector and tensor modes. We also consider the second order perturbations of the metric itself obtaining them, for a universe dominated by a collision-less fluid, in the Poisson gauge, by transforming the known results in the synchronous gauge. We discuss the resulting second order anisotropies in the Poisson gauge, and analyse the possible relevance of the different terms. We expect that, in the simplest scenarios for structure formation, the main effect comes from the gravitational lensing by scalar perturbati…

Sterile neutrinos with secret interactions—lasting friendship with cosmology

2015

Sterile neutrinos with mass ~1 eV and order 10% mixing with active neutrinos have been proposed as a solution to anomalies in neutrino oscillation data, but are tightly constrained by cosmological limits. It was recently shown that these constraints are avoided if sterile neutrinos couple to a new MeV-scale gauge boson A'. However, even this scenario is restricted by structure formation constraints when A'-mediated collisional processes lead to efficient active-to-sterile neutrino conversion after neutrinos have decoupled. In view of this, we reevaluate in this paper the viability of sterile neutrinos with such "secret" interactions. We carefully dissect their evolution in the early Univers…
