Magnetohydrodynamic experiments on cosmic magnetic fields

2008

It is widely known that cosmic magnetic fields, i.e. the fields of planets, stars, and galaxies, are produced by the hydromagnetic dynamo effect in moving electrically conducting fluids. It is less well known that cosmic magnetic fields play also an active role in cosmic structure formation by enabling outward transport of angular momentum in accretion disks via the magnetorotational instability (MRI). Considerable theoretical and computational progress has been made in understanding both processes. In addition to this, the last ten years have seen tremendous efforts in studying both effects in liquid metal experiments. In 1999, magnetic field self-excitation was observed in the large scale…

A global descriptor of spatial pattern interaction in the galaxy distribution

1997

We present the function J as a morphological descriptor for point patterns formed by the distribution of galaxies in the Universe. This function was recently introduced in the field of spatial statistics, and is based on the nearest neighbor distribution and the void probability function. The J descriptor allows to distinguish clustered (i.e. correlated) from ``regular'' (i.e. anti-correlated) point distributions. We outline the theoretical foundations of the method, perform tests with a Matern cluster process as an idealised model of galaxy clustering, and apply the descriptor to galaxies and loose groups in the Perseus-Pisces Survey. A comparison with mock-samples extracted from a mixed d…

Learning from observations of the microwave background at small angular scales

1996

In this paper, we focus our attention on the following question: How well can we recover the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background from the maps of a given experiment?. Each experiment is described by a a pixelization scale, a beam size, a noise level and a sky coverage. We use accurate numerical simulations of the microwave sky and a cold dark matter model for structure formation in the universe. Angular scales smaller than those of previous simulations are included. The spectrum obtained from the simulated maps is appropriately compared with the theoretical one. Relative deviations between these spectra are estimated. Various contributions to these deviations are analyzed. The…

SDSS DR7 superclusters. Principal component analysis

2011

We apply the principal component analysis and Spearman's correlation test to study the properties of superclusters drawn from the SDSS DR7. We analyse possible selection effects in the supercluster catalogue, study the physical and morphological properties of superclusters, find their possible subsets, and determine scaling relations for superclusters. We show that the parameters of superclusters do not correlate with their distance. The correlations between the physical and morphological properties of superclusters are strong. Superclusters can be divided into two populations according to their total luminosity. High-luminosity superclusters form two sets, more elongated systems with the s…

Simulation of surface-controlled phase separation in slit pores: Diffusive Ginzburg-Landau kinetics versus Molecular Dynamics

2008

The phase separation kinetics of binary fluids in constrained geometry is a challenge for computer simulation, since nontrivial structure formation occurs extending from the atomic scale up to mesoscopic scales, and a very large range of time needs to be considered. One line of attack to this problem is to try nevertheless standard Molecular Dynamics (MD), another approach is to coarse-grain the model to apply a time-dependent nonlinear Ginzburg–Landau equation that is numerically integrated. For a symmetric binary mixture confined between two parallel walls that prefer one species, both approaches are applied and compared to each other. There occurs a nontrivial interplay between the forma…

Neutrino Mass Ordering from Oscillations and Beyond: 2018 Status and Future Prospects

2018

The ordering of the neutrino masses is a crucial input for a deep understanding of flavor physics, and its determination may provide the key to establish the relationship among the lepton masses and mixings and their analogous properties in the quark sector. The extraction of the neutrino mass ordering is a data-driven field expected to evolve very rapidly in the next decade. In this review, we both analyze the present status and describe the physics of subsequent prospects. Firstly, the different current available tools to measure the neutrino mass ordering are described. Namely, reactor, long-baseline (accelerator and atmospheric) neutrino beams, laboratory searches for beta and neutrinol…

A facile way to synthesize noble metal free TiO2 based catalysts for glycerol photoreforming

2023

In this work anaerobic heterogeneous photocatalytic solar/UV light reforming of glycerol in aqueous media was performed with Pt-photodeposition and noble metal free modified TiO2 photocatalysts prepared through ball milling, a very simple and cheap coupled catalyst preparation method. Different amounts of Cu2O or 3% CuO were loaded on TiO2 using ball milling and during each run glycerol conversion, hydrogen and CO2 formed in the gas phase and 1,3-dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and glyceraldehyde (GA) in the liquid phase were determined. The results were compared with the aim to verify the effectiveness of Cu2O in replacing Pt. Using noble metal free photocatalysts, 33% glycerol conversion, 10.3% an…

Exploring the role of cosmological shock waves in the Dianoga simulations of galaxy clusters

2021

Cosmological shock waves are ubiquitous to cosmic structure formation and evolution. As a consequence, they play a major role in the energy distribution and thermalization of the intergalactic medium (IGM). We analyze the Mach number distribution in the Dianoga simulations of galaxy clusters performed with the SPH code GADGET-3. The simulations include the effects of radiative cooling, star formation, metal enrichment, supernova and active galactic nuclei feedback. A grid-based shock-finding algorithm is applied in post-processing to the outputs of the simulations. This procedure allows us to explore in detail the distribution of shocked cells and their strengths as a function of cluster ma…

Decisive influence of substitution positions in molecular self-assembly

2014

Molecular self-assembly provides a versatile tool for creating functional molecular structures at surfaces. A rational design of molecular structure formation requires not only an in-depth understanding of the subtle balance between intermolecular and molecule-surface interactions, but might also involve considering chemical changes of the molecules, such as deprotonation. Here, we present a systematic investigation of a comparatively simple class of molecules, namely dihydroxybenzoic acid, which, nevertheless, enables creating a rich variety of structures when deposited onto calcite (10.4) held at room temperature. Based on non-contact atomic force microscopy measurements in ultra-high vac…

Cosmological origin of anomalous radio background

2012

The ARCADE 2 collaboration has reported a significant excess in the isotropic radio background, whose homogeneity cannot be reconciled with clustered sources. This suggests a cosmological origin prior to structure formation. We investigate several potential mechanisms and show that injection of relativistic electrons through late decays of a metastable particle can give rise to the observed excess radio spectrum through synchrotron emission. However, constraints from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy, on injection of charged particles and on the primordial magnetic field, present a challenge. The simplest scenario is with a greater than or similar to 9 GeV particle decaying i…
