International Performance Assessment of Learning in Higher Education (iPAL): Research and Development

2018

Educators and policy makers now recognize how important and necessary it is to assess student learning outcomes (SLOs) in higher education. The question has shifted from whether such outcomes should be measured to how they should be measured. Today SLOs are typically assessed by student self-reports of learning or with multiple-choice and short-answer tests. Each of these methods has its strengths and limitations; each one provides insights into the nature of teaching and learning. An alternative approach is the assessment of performance using “criterion” tasks that are drawn from real-world situations in which students are being educated, both within and across academic or professional dom…

Factors promoting vocational students’ learning at work: study on student experiences

2012

In order to promote effective pedagogical practices for students’ work-based learning, we need to understand better how students’ learning at work can be supported. This paper examines the factors explaining students’ workplace learning (WPL) outcomes, addressing three aspects: (1) student-related individual factors, (2) social and structural features of workplace and (3) educational practices related to the organising of WPL periods. The data were collected from final-year vocational students (N = 3106, n = 1603) via an Internet questionnaire. The findings from regression analysis showed that students’ WPL outcomes cannot be seen merely as consequences of student-related individual factors…

Student outcomes in Philippine elementary schools: An evaluation of four experiments

1999

International audience; Policymakers in most developing countries are concerned about high dropout rates and poor student learning in primary education. The government of the Philippines initiated the Dropout Intervention Program in 1990-92 as part of its effort to address these issues. Under this program, four experimental interventions were randomly assigned to 20 schools in selected low-income areas. Pre- and post-intervention data were collected from these schools, as well as from 10 control schools, in order to evaluate the program's impact on dropout behavior and student learning. The economic justification for replication appears to be strongest for the interventions that provided te…

Algunas primeras conclusiones …

The Effects of Database Complexity on SQL Query Formulation (journal-first)

2020

The learning of practical Structured Query Language (SQL) skills often takes place in digital environments, where the learner writes queries against an exercise database. The exercise database is usually designed and implemented by the teacher, and populated with makeshift data. Although this approach is common, and SQL taught in almost all database courses, little scientific attention has been given to the nature of the exercise database.

The Effects of Database Complexity on SQL Query Formulation

2020

In Structured Query Language (SQL) education, students often execute queries against a simple exercise database. Recently, databases that are more realistic have been utilized to the effect that students find exercises more interesting and useful, as these databases more accurately mimic databases students are likely to encounter in their future work environments. However, using even the most engaging database can be counterproductive to learning, if a student is not able to formulate correct queries due to the complexity of the database schema. Scientific evidence on the effects of database complexity on student’s query formulation is limited, and with queries from 744 students against thr…

Learning Platforms: How to Make the Right Choice

2018

Learning through online platform opportunities is one way of organizing a technology-enhanced learning process. This chapter provides an overview of the place and role of learning platforms in the pedagogical process, defines the differences between learning platforms and learning management systems and offers a toolkit for evaluating learning platforms. The toolkit includes 22 criteria divided into 43 sub-criteria, which can be evaluated at 3 levels. This tool can help teachers, school administrators and other stakeholders to make a pedagogically based choice when it comes to choosing which learning platform solutions to use to scaffold student learning in a transformed learning process th…
