The international state of research on measurement of competency in higher education
2015
With the Program for International Student Assessment and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study surveys, competency assessment became an important policy instrument in the school sector; only recently has international competency measurement gained attention in higher education with the Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes (AHELO) feasibility study. As AHELO showed, measurement of competencies in higher education is a complex and multidimensional task, which poses great methodological challenges. These challenges arise out of the high diversity of degree courses, study programs, and institutions of higher education. Nevertheless, we need to address these challeng…
Medical student ultrasound education: a WFUMB position paper, part I
2019
The introduction of ultrasound into medical student education is well underway in many locations around the world, but is still in its infancy or has yet to begin in others. Experiences from various educational systems and available evidence regarding the impact of ultrasound education are summarized. Representing multiple societies and…
Positive Psychology Perspectives on Foreign Language Learning and Teaching
2016
The process of internationalisation of education in Australia and globally is frequently viewed from the deficit perspective of difficulties and challenges international students face while studying in another country. This paper examines a different perspective of the international educational experience. It explores the positive aspects of the international students’ view on their life in Australia and studying at an Australian university. The paper examines possible interpretations of data from student surveys using dimensions from educational positive psychology for the analysis. First, it outlines the concepts of negative and positive emotions and their role in learning. Then, it intro…
Internet addiction in nursing students

An Intra-Subject Approach Based on the Application of HMM to Predict Concentration in Educational Contexts from Nonintrusive Physiological Signals in…
2021
Previous research has proven the strong influence of emotions on student engagement and motivation. Therefore, emotion recognition is becoming very relevant in educational scenarios, but there is no standard method for predicting students’ affects. However, physiological signals have been widely used in educational contexts. Some physiological signals have shown a high accuracy in detecting emotions because they reflect spontaneous affect-related information, which is fresh and does not require additional control or interpretation. Most proposed works use measuring equipment for which applicability in real-world scenarios is limited because of its high cost and intrusiveness. To tackle this…
From Heuristics to Humble Theories in Physics Education: The Case of Modelling Personal Appropriation of Thermodynamics in Naturalistic Settings
2014
This paper concerns the analysis of data collected during the implementation of a teaching proposal on thermodynamics in a class of 20 students (17 year-olds) of a scientifically-oriented secondary school in Italy. After a brief presentation of the teaching proposal design and of the notion of learning environment as properly complex territory, the results of two levels of analysis are discussed. The first level regards a phenomenological (bottom-up) analysis of a selection of individual interviews to students. The analysis allowed us: i) to reconstruct how different students approached the study of thermodynamics; ii) to show in what sense we can infer, in the words of Confrey, that the te…
Sporta motivācijas, psiholoģisko vajadzību un izdegšanas saistības studējošiem sportistiem
2022
Pētījuma mērķis: atklāt savstarpējās saistības starp sporta motivāciju, psiholoģiskajām vajadzībām un izdegšanu studējošiem sportistiem. Pētījuma dalībnieki: 245 studenti-sportisti, kuru vidējais vecums ir M (SD) = 24 (6,48) un to vidējais sporta stāžs ir M (SD) = 11 (6,41). Pētījuma metode: instruments, kas ietver trīs aptaujas: Sporta motivācijas aptauja-II (SMA-II), Psiholoģisko vajadzību aptauja sporta jomā (PVASJ) un Sportistu izdegšanas aptauja (SIA). Rezultāti: apstiprinošā faktoru analīze norāda uz atbilstošu hipotētisko modeli instrumentā iekļautajām aptaujām. Respondentiem vadošais no visiem motivācijas regulācijas veidiem ir iekšējais regulācijas veids, turklāt uztvertā piederība…
