“Come join us, and lose your accent!” : Accent Modification Courses as Hierarchization of International Student

In this article, we examine the hierarchization of international students by bringing together perspectives of linguistic legitimacy and language ideologies. Our data stems from 26 accent reduction (AR) or accent modification (AM) course descriptions and websites from US universities. Based on their analysis, we discuss the socio-political implications of the phenomenon of these courses for international students and the ways in which language-based, particularly accent-based, arguments are used to create or reinforce different categories of students. Abstract Background Laparoscopic assistance is often entrusted to a less experienced resident, medical student, or operating room nurse. Data regarding laparoscopic training for operating room nurses are not available. Objectives The aim of the study was to analyse the initial performance level and learning curves of operating room nurses in basic laparoscopic surgery compared with medical students and surgical residents to determine their ability to assist with this type of procedure. Darbā tiek pētīta augstskolas un industrijas sadarbība inovāciju veicināšanai Eiropas Savienības inovāciju politikas kontekstā. Darba mērķis ir izpētīt augstskolas un industrijas sadarbības veidus, studentu iesaisti sadarbībā, kā arī šo sadarbību ietekmējošos faktorus Latvijas Universitātē. Tika konstatēts, ka Latvijas Universitātes sadarbības ar industriju un studentu iesaistes prakses ir dažādas, un tās atšķiras no fakultātes uz fakultāti. Uz šodienu Latvijas Universitātē ir izveidojusies liela studentu skaita zaudēšanas tendence Datorikas fakultātes 1.kursā. Šī situācija ir rosinājusi pētījumu ar mērķi noteikt faktorus, kas ietekmē studentus, kuri ir izlēmuši pamest studiju vietu, kā arī radušās problēmas izlabošanas metodes. Viena no pētāmajām metodēm ir loģiskās domāšanas testi, kuru analīze un izpēte ir šī darba galvenais uzdevums, kā arī sava testa izveidošana, izmantojot analīzes gaitā gūtās zināšanas.

Darbs veltīts Latvijas Universitātes Filoloģijas un filozofijas fakultātes Vēstures nodaļas izpētei. Tajā tiek aprakstīts studentu sastāvs un studiju organizācija nodaļā, sniedzot ieskatu Vēstures nodaļas darbībā no 1919. gada, kad tā tika dibināta, – līdz Latvijas Universitātes likvidācijai 1940. gadā. Nozīmīgākie darbā izmantotie materiāli ir Vēstures nodaļas absolventu studentu personīgās lietas, kuras iepriekš nav pētītas. No lietām iegūto informāciju papildinot ar skaidrojumiem historiogrāfijā un citiem materiāliem, tiek parādīts Vēstures nodaļas nozīmīgums Latvijas vēsturē.
