Clinical pain evaluation with intraoral vibration device during local anesthetic injections

2014

Objectives: To evaluate the clinical pain during local anesthetic injection using such intra-oral device. Study Design: A comparative split-mouth clinical study to evaluate clinical pain was conducted among the subjects who required bilateral local anesthetic intra-oral injections. Results: A total of 99 subjects participated in the study out of which 39 were female. A total of 256 local anesthetic injections were administered to all the subjects with at least one pair of similar local anesthetic injections. Comparison of mean VAS score for anticipated pain in without vibration group was significantly higher in all types of nerve blocks when compared to that of with vibration. Similarly, th…

Advantages and limitations of implant surgery with CAD/CAM surgical guides : a literature review

2020

Background The purpose of this study is to review the available literature associated with implant surgery using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) surgical guides and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this advanced technique. Material and Methods An electronic literature search was conducted in the PubMed database for the relevant information on implant placement with CAD/CAM surgical guides. This review was constructed following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. Articles were limited to those published within the past 10 years and in the English language. Only clinical studies were included. Inclusio…

Normalwerterstellung von Blutströmungsgeschwindigkeiten an der Arteria mesenterica superior bei Früh- und Reifgeborenen mit der Duplexsonographie

1994

In a prospective study blood flow velocity measurements were performed in 110 "healthy" newborn with duplex Doppler sonography in the superior mesenteric artery to obtain standard values. In 49 of these neonates 15, 30, and 45 minutes following feeding examinations were performed. Peak systolic flow velocity, end systolic flow velocity, time average flow velocity and time average maximum flow velocity were determined, the resistance and Pourcelot index as well as the volume blood flow were calculated. The children's gestational age was 27-42 weeks, the postnatal age was 2-68 days and the body weight was 920-4190 g. All measured blood flow velocities showed a synchronous relation to feeding …

Co-morbid mental health conditions in cancer patients at working age - prevalence, risk profiles, and care uptake

2013

Summary Objective This study examined the prevalence of mental health conditions in cancer patients, the role of socioeconomic position in relation to that, and the use of professional mental health care. Methods Prospective cohort with measurements at the beginning of inpatient treatment (baseline) and 3, 9, and 15 months after baseline using structured clinical interviews based on DSM-IV, questionnaires, and medical records. Results At baseline, 149 out of 502 cancer patients (30%) were diagnosed with a mental health condition. Prevalence was associated with unemployment (odds ratio [OR] 2.0), fatigue (OR 1.9), and pain (OR 1.7). Of those with mental health conditions, 9% saw a psychother…

Prenatal testosterone of progenitors could be involved in the etiology of both anorexia nervosa and autism spectrum disorders of their offspring

2014

Objectives High intrauterine testosterone (T) levels seem to play a role in the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), but their role in anorexia nervosa (AN) is controversial. Parents with masculinized 2D:4D ratios, a marker of the organizational effects of T, may have other relevant biological characteristics, in particular exposing their offspring to high T levels in the prenatal environment. This would increase the likelihood of their offspring developing these disorders. Methods The present study examined whether parents of offspring with AN (n=34; mean age= 51) and ASD (n=36; mean age=45) differ from control parents (n=40; mean age=43) in 2D:4D ratio, as well as by salivary …

Resection of esophageal diverticulum through uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery

2018

Open surgery remains the standard strategy for management of esophageal diverticulum in symptomatic patients. However, in the last years an increasing number of minimally invasive approaches have been proposed for this issue in order to reduce the surgical trauma and favor a fast return to daily activity. Herein, we describe a novel technique as uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for performing resection of esophageal diverticulum. This procedure was successfully carried out in three consecutive patients with giant mid-esophageal diverticulum (mean size: 6.5±0.5 cm). The mean post-operative time was 121±10 minutes. The chest drain was removed 48 hours later in all cases a…

Early and late cardiovascular events in patients hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia

2020

Abstract Introduction Community-acquired pneumonia increases the risk of cardiovascular events (CVE). The objective of this study was to analyze host, severity, and etiology factors associated with the appearance of early and late events and their impact on mortality. Method Prospective multicenter cohort study in patients hospitalized for pneumonia. CVE and mortality rates were collected at admission, 30-day follow-up (early events), and one-year follow-up (late events). Results In total, 202 of 1967 (10.42%) patients presented early CVE and 122 (6.64%) late events; 16% of 1-year mortality was attributed to cardiovascular disease. The host risk factors related to cardiovascular complicatio…
